Memorizing the Word of God

By Kathy A. Weckwerth, Founder & Exec. Director

"Whoever looks intently into the perfect law ... and continues in it --not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it--they will be blessed in what they do."  James 1:25 (NIV)

Every day we are faced with challenges, decisions, and circumstances that need our response.  I don't know about you, but I find myself forced to make many decisions a day, and many times I need an answer, and I need it fast!  Where do you find your help?

Cornell University did a study that shows that we make 35,000 decisions a day and 226.7 of those are about food alone!  We are in constant need of God's help.

I learned many years ago that the best way to help myself in a decision-making process, was to do as follows:

1.  Seek God in PRAYER

2.  Seek God's WORD

3.  Seek WISE COUNSEL

But I also learned when I was in crisis mode, that I would pray and God would prompt my mind to remember the wisdom of the Bible ... His Word for us.  If we don't have His Word stored in the filing cabinets of our minds, as well as living and breathing in the essence of the corridors of our hearts, we are not utilizing God's tools for living our BEST LIFE.

Memorizing scripture  isn't easy for everyone, but if we look at this verse in James, we can see that God has laid out a pattern for us to learn His Word.

"Whoever looks intently into the perfect law ... and continues in it --not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it--they will be blessed in what they do."  James 1:25 (NIV)

1.  STUDIES IT:   "Whoever looks intently"

2.  STANDS FIRM IN IT:  "continues in it"

3.  SOAKS IT IN THEIR HEART:  "not forgetting what they have heard."

4.  SETTLES INTO IT:  "but doing it."

This month, Best Life encourages you to study God's Word, and soak it into the very core of who you are, by MEMORIZING it.  Take a little bit at a time, because when we know God's Word, we LIVE God's Word, and we become our BEST.

5 Top Verses to Memorize

There are so MANY verses that can encourage you when you're feeling stressed, burdened, or even alone.  Here are a few of our favorites to get you started on your journey to memorization!

1.  Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto thy own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path."

2.  Isaiah 41:10  "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

3.  Psalm 16:8 "I have set the Lord always before me.  Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."

4.  Isaiah 26:3  "You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You."

5.  John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.   That whosever believes in Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life."

BLM'S Exclusive Interview With Christian Contemporary Artist, Shannon Wexelberg

(An excerpt taken from our recent YOUR BEST issue!)

BLM:  What prompted you to create this encouraging and hope-filled project called Take Heart?

Shannon:  I often joke that when I write songs they usually start as my own therapy session between me and the Lord. Actually, that's no joke at all! They are mostly birthed from stuff I'm walking through and wrestling through and taking to Him. The fact that these songs get recorded and then encourage others is the fruit of His own comfort overflowing from my life. Praise God for that! As for the 'theme' of this project - Take Heart - I've found it is so easy for me to lose perspective and get my eyes on all my problems, my weaknesses and all the pain that is occurring in the world around me. It can be disheartening when we look at it from an earthly perspective. But in John 16:33, Jesus is asking us to find our peace in Him - not as the world gives, but as only He can give - and to "take heart" because He has already won the victory! This verse was the inspiration for many of the songs on the CD and has been my prayer for people as they listen.

BLM's 2009-2012 WORSHIP LEADER, Dave Herring delivers a powerful journey through the book of Revelation, on this newly released CD by Dave Herring Band, entitled "The Book of Revelation."  Herring's voice (a voice you can't get enough of) is consistently unique and smooth, with rich tones that cover the wispy, delicate harmonies of background vocalist, Amanda Herring, and balances perfectly with the tight knit sounds of the band. (including our very own bass player, James Lundquist).

In keeping with the folk sound, one of the most rewarding things to the listener's ear is the advantageous use of eclectic instruments, like the hammer dulcimer, accordion, cellos, violas, and the glockenspiel.

Great harmonies, meaningful lyrics, and a varying style of song selections, set this CD above the rest.   Download yours today!

Song of Autumn

By Frances Benham Johnson

If you have reveled in a maple tree

Flaunting the brilliance of its scarlet cloak,

Or watched black lines of geese wing wild and free

Above the hills of autumn, and the smoke

From burning leaves rise gragrant on the air, Seen spikes of goldenrod line every road

And light fence corners with a yellow flare,

Glimpsed empty summer nests, once the abode

Of singing bird, on leafless dark-etched bough,

Joyed in bright petals clinging to a stalk

Sun-dried and brittle, petals to endow

With gallant color paths white frost must walk ...

If you have loved the rain of maple leaves,

Then you have known the spell that autumn weaves.
