 Time to Enjoy Your Life
By: Executive Dir.,
Kathy A. Weckwerth
The words that flow from my lips daily, are these ... just keeping moving. I tell my family, I tell my husband Farmer Dean, and I tell my Chihuahua, Ben ...just keeping moving.
I like to think of myself as a hard worker, someone who values getting things accomplished and encourages others to live for Christ. But in the everyday blur of what I call my world, I have begun to realize something about myself. I cannot do it all. As much as I hate those words, and I do hate them (sorry to my dad who always said, "never use the word hate!") I just can't seem to keep up with it all. Do you find yourself in the same boat?
This month, I want to encourage all of us that I know it's not God's plan for us to run ourselves ragged. In Mark chapter 6, the disciples have been working hard with Jesus, and He knows that they are weary. Mark 6:30-31 says, "The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." (NIV)
It's a wonderful blessing that God's Word has the answers to all of our problems ...even being tired!! The answer is right there and it's twofold: 1) come with me by yourself 2) get some rest. It's very simple direction for our lives. Jesus tells us to rest in Him, but we must rest.
As I look over this past year, so many things have happened. I lost two of my dearest friends to Heaven, Dean and I moved a church to our property, I started two Bible studies, delivered 6 conferences and had many speaking engagements, I finished two books, married two daughters, and moved them twice. I'm tired just listing these things.
This month, I'm encouraging all of us....let's work hard...and then let's allow ourselves time to REST!!! What are the fun things in summer that allow us to fill up and feel refreshed?
It's time to let go and let God restore us. He is calling you. He is calling me. Can you hear Him? He's saying ...
"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

Living a JOY-Filled Life
By: Heidi Elizabeth Johnson
(Exec. Director's Note: Before this article was written, Heidi was diagnosed with Ramsey Hunt Syndrome II, coupled with diabetes, and was also diagnosed with stage four cirrhosis of the liver caused by stage four auto immune hepatitis.)
What does it mean to live a JOY filled life? On the surface it is easy to conjure a variety of images, thoughts, and desires; presenting a picture of what our lives ought to look like.
In Philippians 4:8, we are challenged to seek out and dwell within the positives in our life. Consider these words; to seek out, to be actively looking; searching for, and dwelling. We are asked to create a home within the positives of our life. What a unique concept. To actively look for positives and then to create a home within those things that are positive.
Spending time dwelling in the arms of our Savior; dwelling in the arms of Abba Father, JOY comes in abundance. Our JOY is multiplied simply by laying within the arms of God. It is here that we create our home in the most positive place of all, the sanctum of Gods arms, a grasp that will not let us go. Such a place can only allow our hearts to sing with praise. Thanksgiving and praise only increases our JOY!!!
So now you may be asking, "What does this mean for me? How does this change the struggles of day-to-day living?" Rather than looking at these struggles in a negative light, what if we were to see them as blessings, or opportunities to learn lessons of patience and understanding.
Opening and aligning our hearts and souls to the blessings of our Creator through JOY, and through worship and praise, allows a flow from our separateness to our oneness with God. It delivers incredible and beautiful freedom!
We are blessed to know the Father intimately, blessed to experience the fruit of the Spirit. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, this JOY filled relationship becomes dynamic and alive, this relationship is flowing.
Words that enter my mind as I close my eyes and imagine this beautiful, fluid relationship are the following: healthy, self-awareness, acceptance, openness. We no longer reside in a space that is static and predictable. We are brought into a space of noble truth: the truth of Jesus.
Jesus tells us that He IS the Way, He IS the Truth, and He IS the Light. Jesus is the way to the Father. Imagine that Jesus lovingly takes your hand and guides you along. He begins to tell you with great excitement, with tremendous JOY, that He wants YOU to meet the Father. He wants to guide you to those wonderful loving arms, to His lap that is big enough for all of us.
As we maneuver down the path of this spiritual journey, it is important to be engaged in the here and now. Life can be unpredictable, life can be difficult, and life can wondrous. Yet we are so blessed to have a Heavenly Father who assists us in navigating this path; even more so, navigating this path in JOY.
Allow yourself to be immersed in the love and JOY given to us by God. This love will flow so freely from our own hearts to others. The love of the Lord is meant to be shared.

Addicted to Sugar
By: Dr. Justin Hildebrand
I recently read an article entitled "Dietary Crackheads and Obesity" and was very interested. Although the term "crackhead" maybe extreme, I believe the effects of sugar, flour, and refined grains on the brain maybe surprising to you. The problem with these carbohydrates is that when we eat them, they induce addiction chemistry in the brain, which makes us want them all the more.
Through the fall and winter, we indulge ourselves with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter treats and foods. These extremely pleasant, grand meals and treats may fill us with great memories and happiness, but they also trigger the reward system of our brains' limbic system. Fulfilling the reward gives us pleasure so we continuously seek this pleasure with sugar and refined grains.
How many of us have to have bread with a meal, a sugary drink throughout the day, or something sweet in the evening? These cravings are not just your specific taste in foods but your brain seeking its daily or hourly fix. Whenever we are craving for these foods the addiction chemistry is working overtime in the brain.
Trust me; you are not alone when it comes to eating with your brain. After long days at work or stressful weeks, I feel my limbic system craving chocolate and sweets. Many nights I sit and eat M&M after M&M without contempt. When this happens to you there are a few tricks that can calm our cravings.
If you are like me, I do my cleaning, housework, and chores on the weekend. I also do not indulge in sweet delights as frequently on my days off as I do during the fast passed, stressful week days. Our brain and limbic system also responds to physical activity and completing goals. Doing yard work or housework has an appetite suppressing quality and produces a reward much like snacking on high carbohydrate foods.
Next time you feel your reward center telling you to eat that candy bar or have another piece of bread, try going for a walk or performing a small task that you are putting off until the weekend. Also, remember you are not alone nor should you feel guilty for giving in to your cravings. The first step is admitting and then working towards replacing the cravings with activity.

Finding Rest
Psalm 62:5
"Yes, my soul, find rest in God: my hope comes from Him. "
Dear Jesus, the world pushes me to do as much as I can all the time, pushing past my own limits and if I don't, I am deemed a failure. Please help me to take time to quiet my spirit, quiet my heart and mind, and rest in Your presence. Take away my guilt and help me believe Your Word that tells me,
"The fear of the Lord leads to life, then one rests content, untouched by trouble." (Prov.19:23)

Best Life's Favorite SUMMER BESTS
.....worth making time for!!!
· Bed
Change the sheets and spray a soft lilac or seaside linen spray on the bed. Replace old heavy winter blankets with a lighter cotton one. Open the windows for fresh air and put a restful classical cd on quiet. Stretch out and nap!
· Books
Some of the most encouraging books tend to be those that take us away on a fun adventure. For comforting stories, check out an amazing author from early 1900's named Grace Livingston Hill, or Janet Oakley and Karen Kingsbury.
· Birds
Even if you don't think you're interested in bird watching, you'd be surprised at how beautiful they are and how comforting the sound of their calls and chirps can be to warm your spirit. Gold finch, robin, meadow lark, orioles, hummingbirds and blue jays offer lovely sights and sounds for your backyard. Walmart offers inexpensive bird houses and seed.
· Brownies
Sometimes, a fun afternoon treat can be a warm brownie right out of the oven, as you take your lawn chair out under the trees and pull that favorite book out with a big glass of lemonade or ice tea. Betty Crocker's mix with some powdered sugar frosting adding 2 big tablespoons of cocoa does the trick!
· Bible
You don't have to do a big study of the Bible and work your mind, but at times, just reading through some of the Psalms can be an amazing comfort. Hearing the words that you are loved and God is your strength, is always restful.

Set your table for a fun picnic experience for the whole family! Make it feel like a very special event.
The BEST Summer Picnics...Ever
Making Family Time Extra Special
To make the picnic table setting at the left, we pulled out the old table and benches from behind the garage and sat them level underneath a tree (for shade) in the backyard. Next, we went to the neighboring Fabric Outlet shop and purchased pillowcase ticking material, cutting a long thin strip to cover the center of the table. Lanterns were $12.99 at Target on clearance, white square dishes were $3.99 and $2.99 at Walmart, and rope was in the tool shed. Red napkins were from clearance at Walmart's fabric aisle, and an old tool tray serves as a carrier for utensils.
To make outdoor times extra special, plan the menu, invite the friends and head outside!
