Greetings!
Doors open. Doors shut. Doors keep things in. Doors keep things out. The doors of our lives determine who we are, and who we will become.
This month Best Life wants to take a closer look at accepting the doors that God opens for us.
Best Life's 2013 Topic is: Closed Doors/Open Windows: God's Possibilities. Read more and be encouraged about God's purpose in the doors of opportunity. |

The Doors of Opportunity By: Exec. Dir, Kathy Weckwerth
It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Ephesians 1:11 MSG
 | |
Exec. Dir, Kathy Weckwerth. |
So often in life we approach a door that we think is meant for us, only to be disappointed when it won't open.
At times that door is open slightly, but soon slams shut as if a cool breeze on a spring morning has closed it tight.
We all know what that feels like and we all can relate to the questions that spin around in our brains as we try to embrace the whys and the why nots.
This will be the start of our sixth year as a ministry, delivering inspirational and motivational conferences. For those of you who have attended our conferences, you know that the impetus behind our ministry is credited to a horrifically violent attack on my middle daughter, Chandra. At one point, she closed her eyes and told God she was ready to meet Him, if it was her time to leave this world. She managed to escape and contact the police.
After this terrible attack, I made a plea to God to help me create something that could serve women. I pledged my life to Him to use for a women's ministry that would deliver encouragement, motivation, inspiration, and keep the focus on help, hope, and healing, to women everywhere.
In the next few days, I went back to my everyday job as a worship director. I could no longer walk in and out of the door to this job and feel God's pleasure. God had heard my cry, listened to my plea, and took me seriously! The door to music and arts was now closed. Everywhere I turned, the doors were locked. I handed in my resignation and walked through to the opportunity of an open door of full time ministry to Best Life Ministries.
There have been times when I have jumped for joy and felt moved with deep devotion. There have been times when I have sat in the corner wondering what I was doing and how we'd ever pay the electric bill. And there were definitely times when I wondered if I had a clue about the undertaking of a leadership role in a nonprofit organization that I had created with only a tear stained face and strong determination.
But the doors were opened, and my heart rejoices that God is the God of busting down doors as well as sealing them shut. He's the only one who can do it, and with that comfort and faith in His Word, I relinquished my doors to Him.
In thirty short days, my sweet middle child, Chandra, will be walking through a new door, the door of marriage. This month, Best Life dedicates our newsletter to the hope of walking through God-opened doors, and new opportunities that He creates, all the while relinquishing our closed doors for God's purposes.
Congratulations to Chandra and Justin! May God's path be the only path you seek and may His grace, peace, and hope, cover you completely as you walk together through this new door.

Prayer & the Closed Doors
 | | Pastor Lewie |
By: Pastor Lewie Schultz
As I write this article I am reminded that those who know me best have consistently and righteously caught me in the trap of always seeing the silver linings of this life in Christ. I am unashamed of the fact that I have found my mental and physical health has been much better when I focus on what scripture says in Philippians 4:8, whatever things that are true and lovely and pure and virtuous, think on these things. So, please forgive me in advance for asking you to discover the benefits of our common experience of closed doors.
Benefit number 1: Closed doors reveal a lot about our prayer life. We discover more about ourselves and our prayers when we fail to receive our desires, or when they seem delayed. Because we know God answers every prayer, we know that when we perceive God not wanting what we want, we experience a closed door.
James challenges us to be aware that we do not have what we do not ask for; or at times, God withholds what we ask for because of our motives (James 2). It is actually a blessing in disguise to become aware of something God said 'no' to, as it teaches us how to pray. This is not to say that every closed door is a direct 'No!' or even a delayed response from God. But these are times that tend to stress our understanding of prayer.
Jesus clearly taught us to pray to the Father asking that His will would be done, and His kingdom advanced in and around us. Not always, but sometimes, we may do well to ask God to search us and to reveal to us our true motives so that we might be realigned with His heart and purposes.
If we believe that everything we ask for in His name, we will have, we would be grateful for those times when we prayed with impatience or lack of trust in God. Otherwise, we would never learn exactly what it is that God wants for us and for those around us.
The Bible gives clear instruction in James 4:14 that we are to pray asking if it is the Lord's will we will live or do this or that. I think this can help us to understand our capacity to declare things presumptuously, and to forget that the Sovereign God of the Universe is lovingly in charge of the affairs of mankind.
I can't help but remember the many times that God's choice servants were denied their prayer requests. Joseph is a stellar example of someone who lived with a clear conscience and always obeyed the Lord. Yet, his life is full of closed doors and many opportunities to doubt God's goodness and love.
So, dear friends, we see that sometimes closed doors in our vocational pursuits, relational desires, and even our seemingly innocent dreams, really do become an opportunity to grow in our conversations with our Creator.
Benefit Number 2: Closed doors also provide a keen and focused opportunity to experience a FAITH CHECK. In those times when we are sure that God is intentionally silent or stubbornly stingy for whatever reasons we imagine, we are posed with the challenging question, 'Can I trust God?'
Since it is impossible to please God without an ever deepening confidence in Him and His purposes(Hebrews 11:6), the times God appears distant or silent, provides great training ground for exercising our faith muscles.
Benefit Number 3: Closed doors sometimes cause us to deal directly and honestly with our human struggle in being disappointed with God.
The songwriting of David often included songs about how he thought God had messed up. He challenged God with the statistics about evil people attaining more wealth than many God-fearing folks. This feeling is exacerbated by the fact that we know God can do anything. When He apparently chooses not to fulfill our desires, we are caught in a quandary.
The truth is, if we used these circumstances to compel us into His presence where we could honestly express our hearts to Him, we would find ourselves even more intimately acquainted with Him. I love the song that I learned as a boy that states, Christ is not a disappointment every longing in my breast finds in Him complete fulfillment He has brought me into rest, I have tested Him and proved Him more than all I dreamed He'd be, Christ is not a disappointment He is all in all to me.
So, fellow climbing companions, join me in allowing the experience of a closed door to teach us everything we need to know about prayer, and to reveal to us our need for deeper faith. Let us be compelled into His loving presence where we can openly declare our heart's honest struggles with the One who loves us more than we can imagine.

BLMS's Exclusive Interview With
Motivational Speaker & Cookbook Author, Sandra Sheih
BLM: What inspired you to create a gluten free cookbook?
I have had the privilege of helping people with food allergies for the last nine years. I meet them at the store, friends pass along my name and phone number, etc. I have found that many people do not know how to cook, let alone navigate through a gluten free necessity. Every person I have helped has asked if I have a cookbook and encouraged me to write it.
BLM: Did you create all your own recipes?
Yes, I have created all of my own recipes. I have poured through the recipe books on the market, and found I like my own recipes that I create the best. I even came up with my own GF (gluten free) flour blend. Plus, it is fun for me to experiment in the kitchen. You never know when your new favorite meal will be created!
BLM: Tell us about what it's like to live in a gluten-loving society and yet cope with allergies to gluten.
To be honest, as each year passes, it gets easier and easier to cook GF food. When my son was first diagnosed with allergies, nine and a half years ago, the food labeling laws had not gone into effect yet. I had to call the company for information on literally every product I purchased. Wheat (and the other top eight allergens) did not have to be declared on the ingredient list. It could be hidden in terms such as food starch or natural flavorings. Employees at restaurants were not knowledgable like they are now. With so many people being diagnosed with gluten sensitivities, gluten allergies, and celiac, it is pretty easy to confirm whether or not it is safe to eat a specific food or eat out at a restaurant.
I have found that knowing the right questions to ask really helps me. Questions like, "Will my hamburger be cooked on the same griddle as the wheat buns?" or, "Do the GF corn chips/fries share the same oil as the chicken strips?" If the answer is 'yes,' I move on to a differnt item.
The hardest thing for me is my multiple allergies. I may find some place with a fantastic gluten free menu, but the GF food is cooked on shared equipment with shellfish, peanut, tree nuts, dairy, or eggs. That is where is becomes dangerous and scary for me. I tend to just bring along my own food. Thankfully, I have fantastic friends that can cook for me sometimes, so I get to eat out in their homes. Another thing I find helpful is to talk with the manager or chef at a restaurant. I have found several places I can eat at safely. It is a wonderful treat!
The last thing is my attitude. I have to remind myself that while it would be really, really nice to order a pizza sometimes, God has created an abundance of other foods I can eat. I think about people with eosinophilic esophagitis, as they often cannot eat; period. They drink a special formula, or are fed through a stomach tube. As long as I am careful I can live a vibrant, abundant life. How many other medical conditions out there are so simple to treat? Putting things into perspective helps me a lot. It took me several years to get to that paradigm of thinking, but once I arrived it was a great thing!
BLM: Sandra, this cookbook sounds like a wonderful blessing! How can we purchase one?
My cookbook can be purchased through my website. www.abundantlyfreecooking.com Click on the store tab to order.

BLM Reviews: Movies & More!
Disney's The Great & Power Oz
For movie goers everywhere, Disney's The Great and Powerful Oz, delivers visual inspiration, creative characters, and an enchanting storyline, however, fails to deliver anything that could measure up to its predecessor, MGM's 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz.
Intended to be the prequel for The Wizard of Oz, the story begins with Oscar Diggs, (played by James Franco) a small time circus magician making a mad dash for an escape route from an angry circus employee. He floats away in an air balloon, only to get swallowed up by a violent tornado and thrust into the Land of Oz.
Diggs meets up with three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who have been searching for a mighty wizard to take over their land for many years.
The story takes the viewer through the battle of good versus evil, as Diggs tries to figure out which witch belongs to which side.
Ingenuity, creativity, and some help from the townsfolk, help him to finally step forward and become the man he's always wanted to be ... a good leader and creative magician.
We went to the matinee show and saved our $3.00. We'd suggest you do the same, or even wait until it comes out on dvd.
Extra Info & Rating: This movie gets 2.5 out of 5 stars. 2 hours 7 minutes, Rated: PG

This month, The Vintage Housewife Creates:
Broccoli Chicken Cresent Braid
Homemade Crescent Roll Recipe 2 eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup Crisco 1 cup warm water 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast 1 teaspoon salt 4 cups flour
Beat eggs and sugar until well combined. Add sugar, Crisco, water, yeast, salt, and 2 cups flour. Gradually add remaining 2 cups of flour. Turn out onto a well floured surface and knead in enough additional flour so the dough is no longer sticky. Divide the dough in half. Each half will make one broccoli chicken braid.
Directions: Let dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour. Flatten dough onto a cookie sheet to make the braid.
Broccoli Chicken Braid Filling
2 cups chicken, cooked and chunked - (can use canned chicken)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (I like to grate my own)
2 cups chopped frozen broccoli, thawed
1 egg yolk (reserve egg white for wash)
1/2 cup mayonnaise (I use Helmanns)
rosemary (fresh chopped finely)
crescent roll recipe (above)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine chopped chicken, cheese, broccoli, egg yolk, mayo, and rosemary in a bowl. Spread crescent roll dough onto a large cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Add the chicken mixture to the middle of the dough. Using kitchen shears or a knife, cut strips along each side of the chicken. Start from one end and alternate sides, pulling a strip of dough across to the opposite side. When the whole braid is finished, add about 1 Tablespoon of water to the reserved egg white and brush the top of the braid with the wash. This gives it a nice shiny finish. Sprinkle additional cheese if desired. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown.
