A new permanent exhibition entitled "Record of Rights" will open at the National Archives on Friday 8 November to mark the inauguration of the new David M. Rubenstein Gallery.

The exhibition will explore how Americans have worked to realise the ideals of freedom and justice, and how issues such as citizenship, free speech, voting rights and equal opportuntiy have been debated.

The "Yearning to Breathe Free" section
explores the notion of America as a nation of immigrants and the enduring debates on the rights of newcomers. Included in this section is the original 1860 census of Irish and Canadian textile workers in Lowell, Massachusetts, who, like many immigrants, faced discrimination and poor working conditions.
