| Spelling Bee
Audrey W., the returning St. John Bosco School champion, represented SJB at the Diocesan Spelling Bee during Catholic Schools Week. With stiff competition from schools throughout the Diocese of Phoenix, Audrey surpassed her personal best from the 2014 Diocesan Spelling Bee. She represented St. John Bosco School proudly with such poise and grace. At the end of the bee, she had a smile on her face and said she hoped to be back next year. Thank you, Audrey, for putting in hundreds of hours worth of studying for the Bee. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Battle of the Books It was an exciting second battle in the three battle series for the Battle of the Books competition held on February 3 in the Library! The seven teams kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The teams did not back down from some very tough questions, and the scores are much tighter as we approach the final battle in March. The team with the most points will be representing St. John Bosco at the city of Chandler Battle of the Books championship in April. Best wishes to all the teams! |

Scrip
Did you know that so far this year, the Scrip program has distributed $14,940.87 in tuition credits to our students? This is all thanks to the support of our SJB families and friends.
Our Scrip year is quickly coming to a close on March 12, 2015. Now is the time to hurry in to buy Scrip and earn credits toward your Scrip account. If you have not met your $100 Scrip obligation (earn $100 in profit), you will be billed, through FACTS, for your unmet liability, up to $100.
The great news is that you still have one month to reach your $100 obligation or to earn more credits toward your tuition. Contact the Scrip Office for more information today! Financial Aid As we prepare to enroll our students for the 2015 - 16 academic year, please note that the various student tuition assistance organizations (STOs) have different deadlines and procedures for their application process. For a list of organizations that have supported SJB students over the past few years, click here. Catholic Education Arizona (CEA) The application process for the 2015 - 16 school year is now open. Catholic Education Arizona uses FAIR-Financial Aid Independent Review to process its applications. Please note that there is a $24.00 application fee. The application is available online or you can also download the CEA-FAIR brochure for 2015 - 16. The CEA school code is 700 and the school password is cea700. If you fax your supporting documents to FAIR, be sure to confirm receipt with FAIR. CEA application deadline for round one awards is April 15. Parents will be notified of the disposition of your submitted application by CEA by June 30, 2015. Brophy Community Foundation The Brophy Community Foundation applications for financial aid for the 2015 - 16 school year are now available at this link. The Foundation's application deadline is April 15--there is no charge for applications submitted on or before April 15. All families who have received an award previously must re-apply every year. Please note that the Foundation uses FACTS to process their applications. This FACTS grant and financial aid system is different from the tool that SJB uses for our FACTS tuition management. If your family applies for CEA scholarship funds, you are encouraged to consider submitting an online application to the Brophy Community Foundation. If you have any questions regarding financial aid resources, please feel free to email Caroline Panzarella, SJB Operations Manager at 480.219.4845. |

What is Scrip, anyway?
Many people still do not understand the Scrip program, so here is a brief explanation:
What Does It Mean? Scrip (not "script") means gift cards.
How Does It Work? Merchants sell us gift cards at a discounted price - say, 5% off. We sell them from the office at face value and, once your minimum obligation is met, that difference is split between SJB and your family to be used for tuition, registration, etc.
Give Me An Example, Please! Joe and his family are going to the movies this weekend, so he stops by to get a couple Harkins movie gift cards. Harkins has a 9% return, so Joe pays $50 for his gift cards (the same he would have paid at the theater) BUT $4.50 gets divided between the school and Joe's Scrip account! If he gets gift cards consistently for movies, groceries, restaurants, gifts, etc., he will have accumulated quite a bit that he can use toward his next FACTS payment when reports come out.
Does It Really Work? Here are a few amounts that certain St. John Bosco families have accumulated through this year's Scrip program, and the year isn't over yet!
Family 1 - $522 Family 2 - $303 Family 3 - $368
These three families not only raised over $1,000 for themselves, they raised almost $1,500 for our school! |
