MAP Scores Place SJB Top in the Nation
The results of our Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing are in! We are proud to announce our students' stellar scores place St. John Bosco as a top performing school in the country! May MAP results show on average 4th through 8th graders scored from the 89th to the 99th percentile across all areas: math, reading and language. In language, these students scored top in the country in the 99th percentile. In math, 4th graders jumped from the 59th to the 89th percentile on the national norm-this is impressive growth! Also in math, 6th graders' scores significantly increased from the 71st to the 98th percentile-placing our school in the top two percentile in the country. Our 3rd graders improved across all areas, excelling in language in the 92nd percentile.
In the second year since implementation of MAP testing at SJB, these scores are the highest to date. They are a reflection of the continued progress we are making as a school to teach to the individual learner.
MAP testing is conducted for 3rd through 8th graders in September, January and May. MAP is used as a national norm test for students across the U.S. at private, parochial, public and charter schools. This computer adaptive assessment provides another tool for our teachers to further their differentiated instruction in the classroom. SJB is the only Diocesan school using MAP.
Congratulations to our 3rd to 8th graders for their significant strides and top scores! Thank you to all their teachers, Math Specialist Melissa Cesarano and Literacy Coach Kymberli Mendenhall for all their work in helping these students reach their highest potential!

More Great "Top-Score" News
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is given three times per year at SJB to kindergarten through 2nd grade students, as well as a few students in 3rd through 6th grade who receive reading intervention. DIBELS is given throughout Arizona and the U.S. to public, charter and private schools. It tests five skills that are necessary for learning to read. Children who learn these skills become good readers. The skills are:
* Phonemic Awareness: Hearing and using sounds in spoken words
* Alphabetic Principle: Knowing the sounds of the letters and sounding out written words
* Accurate and Fluent Reading: Reading stories and other materials easily and quickly with few mistakes
* Vocabulary: Understanding and using a variety of words
* Comprehension: Understanding what is spoken or read
DIBELS is made up of seven short individual tests, called subtests. Each DIBELS subtest focuses on a different skill and takes about one minute to complete. Your child may have been given two to five of the DIBELS subtests depending on his or her grade level.
We also extend congratulations to the entire kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teams who had all of their students show tremendous growth. The dedication, professionalism and knowledge of our staff reflect the achievement of our students' academic success.

PTO needs you - An Invitation from Mr. Watson
As the end of the year draws to a close, we wish many families farewell. However, this allows for a chance for younger families to join in the fun of volunteering on PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). After my first year at SJB, I am so impressed with the heartfelt discussions, efforts, and laughter. Some of the advantages of working on PTO is working closely with administration and collaborating with parents in other grade levels. I am personally asking that you heavily consider jumping on board to lend a hand!
The current volunteer members say:
"The experience of meeting older parents has been invaluable for knowing what lies ahead."
"PTO is a fun, great way to see hard work turn into immediate benefits helping teachers, students and the entire campus."
Every year the PTO works with administration to buy a gift for the school.
