Battle of the Books
St. John Bosco 5th grade team of Reese M., Rocco G., and Aidan W. had a perfect score at the Chandler city semi-finals on April 29. They advanced to the city finals. The Battle of the Books City Competition on May 6 was a real nail biter! Our team battled through a sudden death tie- breaker. Luck of the draw didn't play in their favor. They got some of the toughest questions. Question after question was thrown at them and they answered each one proving how truly prepared they were for this battle. It was a slip up on a trick question that changed their course to the finals. They took the defeat gallantly and held their heads high, representing SJB with great dignity.Aidan, Rocco, and Reese vow to come back again next year! I would like to thank all the teams that participated in Battle of the Books. It was an exciting battle season!

Connect to the Future on SJB Tech Day!
We are excited to announce the success of Running with Rosco and a grant from the Catholic Community Foundation allowed us to purchase additional iPads, bringing our total to 144 new iPads for our school! That means not only putting powerful tablet technology in the hands of students and teachers across pre-k to 8th grade, but also dramatically changing the way our students learn and our teachers present lessons.
On Tuesday, May 13 we will hold a first-ever Tech Day at SJB to kick off Connect to the Future, a school-wide technology initiative for the effective integration of technology in the classroom and across curriculum in 2014-2015-and beyond! Be sure to save the date for Tech Day! Here is a sneak peek at our fun and educational lineup of activities:
8:30 to 8:55 a.m. - Welcome, opening prayer and thank you to the SJB PTO and Catholic Community Foundation by Fr. Bob and Dr. Axman
8:55 to 9:20 a.m. - "iPad Unveil" ribbon cutting ceremony and brief presentations onthe importance of technology in education and careers in tech by Avnet executive Scott MacDonald and Jill Sciarappo, Intelexecutive and SJB parent
9:20 to 10:20 a.m. - iPad learning session led by Apple executive Brian Peterson who will demonstrate some of the best educational apps for kids: Puppet Pals, NOVA Elements and Virtual History Roma
2 to 2:30 p.m. - Connect with Code instructional sessions in the lab and classroomled by Mr. Regalado using coding activities from www.code.org
The Tech Day morning session will take place in the MPR for 6th through 8th graders and by live streaming via ustream.com in the classroom for pre-k through 5th graders. Parents with an internet connection can also access the live stream via the SJB channel at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sjb-programs. The stream will go live five to 10 minutes before the event.
Connect with Code sessions for pre-k through 8th graders will take place in the lab and in the classroom with iPads through a buddy system. SJB's Connect with Code sessions are inspired by the national Hour of Code initiative started by Computer Science Education Week which takes place annually in December. Hour of Code promotes bringing code to the classroom and the fundamentals of computer science for all students, everywhere. For more information, visit www.csedweek.org.
