Cans Across Campus

For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited ME in. - Matthew 25:35

A traditional part of Catholic School Week here at St. John Bosco is our Cans Across Campus event.  Our school teams up with St. Benedict Church and St. Vincent de Paul to provide food and non-food items for families right here in our own community who are struggling to pay for basic necessities.  This year's event will be held on Thursday, January 30. Your student came home with a fluorescent yellow flyer outlining the event and suggesting items that your family may be able to donate.  The students will walk to St. Benedict with their classes on January 30 and fill the pantry themselves.  If each student and staff member brings in at least one item, imagine how many people we can help!  Find collection boxes all over campus.
Bulldog News
Click here to read the Bulldog News. Once again, our student reporters have great stories for you this week. Audrey W. narrates her experience in winning the school Spelling Bee. Jake K. reports on SJB alumnus Emily Wolph receiving a basketball scholarship from Santa Clara University. Stephen B. and Mary L. share the wonderful news about their Christian Service awards. We are also reporting the stories of Victoria B. (on her Girl Scout troop's visit to a senior citizen home) and Elie C. (about her Winter Wonderland reunion with friends) because of technical problems with the last issue.

THE FLU IS HERE

It is not too late to get a flu vaccine.  Many walk in clinics have the vaccine if you can not get in to see your own health care provider.

We now have students with confirmed cases of the flu virus on campus.

Symptoms include fever that can last 3 to 4 days, headache, general aches and pains, exhaustion, stuffy nose, sneezing, cough and chest discomfort.

We have a school policy to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school, but students should not return if they still have other symptoms.  They are still shedding the virus.

The best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to wash your hands with soap and water frequently and to sneeze into your arm.  Please remind your students to wash their hands

Reminder: All medication including cough drops must be brought in to the health office and permission slips signed.  Students are not allowed to keep any medication with them except for emergency medication and a permission slip is on file in the health office.

Juice Pouch Recycling Continues

Thank you to all families and students at SJB who are donating their used juice pouches!

  • We have collected around 3400 pouches so far, and need about 600 more to send them in to TERRACYCLE.

  • Please continue to deposit empty pouches in the JUICE POUCH BOXES in the MPR.

  • If you are sending them in from home, please place them in a sealed ziploc bag in the blue storage box by Ms. Whalen's science room....remember to collect from games, meetings, parties, etc.

  • The CAP Club just received a check for $168.72 from last school year's collection!

Any questions or if you would like to clean pouches for service hours, please contact Jane Waypa.

Box Top News

Well, the check has arrived!!  SJB received a check in the amount of $1925.50, which is the biggest collection the school has ever received at one time.  And it's all because of YOU!  Thank you for "Seeing, Clipping, and Saving" those box tops along with the Labels for Education.  They really do add up quickly and each one is important.    Our End-of-the-Year finale will feature a catered lunch for the grade level who has turned in the most Box Tops and Labels during the school year.  Don't forget you can also shop online at www.btfe.com and order from over 400 retailers.  Each $10 purchase will earn the school Box Tops...but only if going through the Box Tops website first. THANK YOU again for your support!

Math

SJB Students will compete in the third of four Catholic Math League competitions on February 5th. Great work, keep it up!

Scrip News

Do you know that "SCRIP" is a shortened form of the word "conscripment," meaning a form of payment that is alternative to cash, like gift cards!!

SCRIP is a great resource for daily shopping at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, but it is also handy for birthday parties.  If you plan ahead, we can order SCRIP for many popular popular birthday spots like Peter Piper Pizza, Brunswick Lanes, Build a Bear or Dave and Busters. If you have to spend $200 or more on a birthday party, why not get SCRIP credit while you're at it?

Running with Rosco is on February 19th which just about 3 weeks away!  There is still time to turn in your donor forms.

The homeroom that turns in the most sponsor forms will win the "Golden Shoe". Please trust that your generosity in terms of time and resources will be applied directly to improving our students' experiences and education. We are raising funds so that we can buy an entire set of classroom iPads (32) that will be shared on campus. The PTO is extremely grateful for your effort and support.

Attention Bulldog Baseball Players

Baseball season is right around the corner.  Bosco ball players have the exciting opportunity to purchase custom wood bats from two different vendors.  Wood bats are excellent training tools for practice, teaching better swing mechanics and where on the bat to make contact. Additionally, they can save some wear and tear on regular metal/composite bats, especially during tee work. 7th grade players especially should consider a wood bat for the upcoming Bosco baseball season. In the public middle schools, this is a "transitional" time. Players use bats with weights that are heavier than Little League bats, but lighter than full-sized adult bats. Unfortunately, the CYAA organization requires 7th and 8th grade ball players to jump from Little League bats directly to full-sized adult bat weights.

Wood bats are a way for players to still use "transitional" bats, as wood bats are allowed to be lighter weight than metal bats in CYAA.

Coaches Kominski, Rubio and myself have purchased bats for our sons and would be happy to let you take a look before you decide to buy or not.

Zinger Bat Company is a local bat manufacturer which has a design that includes the Bosco "SJB" logo on ash bats, a full paint job with a sky/royal blue and the engraving is the Bosco gold/yellow. Dove Tail Bat Company is out of Maine, but were sponsors of this past weekend's Desert Vista Baseball fundraiser. Their bats are offered in ash, birch and maple with a traditional "pro" design, and they stain their bats. They have worked with us to design a Bosco only bat design which incorporates "Pro" bat design and materials, but a shorter design in a transitional weight.

In order to save time and money, all orders will be collected and submitted together. All orders with payment are due to Erik Brown by February 7, 2014.
