Dear SJB Families,
October was a busy month, we had many student activities that deserve mention. Our Red Ribbon Week was a dual focus of anti drugs and anti bullying. In keeping with the anti bullying theme we had a "mix it up" day where students were asked to eat lunch with different grades and different groups of friends. New friendships were created and conversation was encouraged with a list of questions to start conversations. It was wonderful to see the children enthusiastically participating and learning powerful life skills. There is a video on YouTube
In the spirit of educating the entire family about bullying, we had an evening parent meeting focusing on internet safety. Parents were given very important information related to the dangers of cyber bullying and many different channels that can snag our children and get them in trouble on the internet. If you were unable to attend or would like to further research the topic information can be found at www.netsmartz.org. There are some very sobering facts about cyber bullying and online predators that parents will find helpful to take an active stance in your home.
Due to the engagement of the seminar our wonderful parents asked what kind of protection students had when using the iPads at school. Roy Regadalo , our technology specialist, tells me that the students can only use the school iPads to connect to our protected and monitored server. However, once the iPads leave the school property, they have the capability to connect to an unsecured server. At this time, our website is open to public view. We are looking for ways to have a members only connection to our webpage where we could post pertinent and private information for a parent and family only portal.
As a seasoned principal I came to St. John the Bosco with high hopes for a caring and enthusiastic parents, students and faculty. You have far exceeded my expectations;
St. John the Bosco is blessed with an unbelievably supportive, engaged and innovative community. Thank you for your continued support of the school and your cherished students.
Many blessings for a thankful and joyous November.
Dr. Marie Axman, Principal SJB

From the Health Office
We will be conducting our annual health screenings on Tuesday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 13. All students will be screened for height, weight, and vision. We will also do heart rate and blood pressure screening on grades 4-8, and scoliosis checks on grades 5-8. If you do not want your child to be screened, please notify the health office in writing by Friday, November 8.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the screenings, please call the health office at (480) 219-4849 or email us at attendance@sjbosco.org. Screening usually goes from 8am-3pm both days. You could sign up for just a few hours or the whole day. Morning snacks and lunch will be provided. We like to have about a dozen volunteers each day.
