Principal's Note

Dear SJB Families,

Congratulations, goes to Mrs. Roni Reichardt our fourth grade teacher here at St. John Bosco. She was selected by the University of Phoenix and the Arizona Cardinals as an MVP in the Classroom based on your nomination. She has been teaching here at SJB since 2001. All of the fourth grade students greatly benefit from her teaching. We are so proud of her and send her our best wishes.

Congratulations, also to Mrs. Harvey, our Librarian.  She has been nominated by parents and staff for the I Love my Librarian Award.  This is an award featured on the ilovemylibrary.org website which is an initiative of the American Library Association.  The award itself is co-sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New York Times.  She has been teaching at SJB since 2001 and so many students over the years have flourished in reading because of her dedication.  We are so proud of our SJB teachers and staff!

Please remember that we are not in school this coming Thursday, October 10th, Friday, October 11th and Monday, October 14th . Wednesday, October 9 is a normal 3:05 dismissal day.  Thursday is a special inservice training for our teachers and staff that is focused on differentiated instruction. It is always energizing to attend Mass with all of the teachers throughout the Diocese of Phoenix and take professional classes together.

Since Friday was the feast of St. Francis of Assisi we had some special events. Our student Peacemakers were blessed at our all school Mass. Fr. Hoorman came to bless the pictures of our pets to remind us of St. Francis's great love for nature and animals.

We are all looking forward to the Fall Frenzy. Please remember that you can purchase your tickets online right from our website. This promises to be a memorable event since it is the first time that the school and the church are combining their fall event. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Marie Axman Ed.D., Principal Saint John Bosco

Parent Education Series - Internet Safety

"The Internet can be a wonderful resource for kids. They can use it to research school reports, communicate with teachers and other kids, and play interactive games. Kids who are old enough to punch in a few letters on the keyboard can literally access the world. But that access can also pose hazards. That's why it's important to be aware of what your kids see and hear on the Internet, who they meet, and what they share about themselves online.  Just like any safety issue, it's wise to talk with your kids about your concerns, take advantage of resources to protect them, and keep a close eye on their activities." (HealthKids.org)

Please join us on October 24 at 6:30pm in the library for an informative and eye-opening presentation on internet safety and your children.  Detective Tami Gray, Chandler Police Department, will be speaking about the three main risks for children online:

  • Online Predators
  • Revealing too much
  • Cyberbulling

Detective Gray will also talk about the following popular messaging applications:

  • Kik is a free mobile messenger app that allows kids to text friends who are also using the app. Teens like Kik because it allows them to do more than just type written messages. Kik makes it easy to add video and pictures to a text.   Basically, Kik is just fun and that's what kids are looking for-fun, cool ways to ensure they stay in the peer conversation.
  • Instagram is a free photo sharing app that lets users take pictures with their mobile phones, apply an "optional" filter to the image and share it with friends.  Roughly 58 photographs are being uploaded each second.  Instagram gains one new user every second.
  • Snapchat is a way to share moments with friends.  Snap Chat is a popular app that has become more and more popular with teens because of the assurance that photos sent will disappear automatically a few seconds after they're viewed.   Snapchat is becoming a parent's biggest nightmare, as teens are using it for "Texting" without any ability to track, which makes them feel liberated and scandalous. A recent NYTimes article calls out that although some users aren't clever enough to know not to send inappropriate or unflattering pictures of themselves, they are figuring out how to outwit the system, by taking a quick screenshot of a photo before it evaporates.

From the Math Coach

Our new Math intervention program is well on its way. If your child is working in Moby Max, please continue to support them at home. A child working at home and school is able to make huge strides. Some of the students astound me as to how fast they are catching up. Collectively, we have already accelerated an average of 3 months of math instruction in two weeks! Keep it up.

ZOYO Update
THANK YOU St. John Bosco Community for your support of Zoyo Friday's during the month of September.  Zoya donated $200 back to SJB! That's a lot of yogurt!  The PTO will put the money into an account designated to be used for special requests from classrooms.

Look for details coming soon about "Jamba Jam"...a Jamba Juice on-campus fundraiser in November.   If you've never come to a PTO meeting, please join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:00 pm in the Art room.
