Although the students are on vacation, summer activities continue at the school.
Saturday evening marked the end of the two-week Family Promise visit at St. John Bosco. The Family Promise program in Phoenix is one of 159 programs designed to temporarily meet the needs of homeless families in the valley. The organization was founded over 20 years ago. To find out more about Family Promise, please visit the organization's website.
Other activities on campus include facilities work such as painting, cleaning/waxing floors, major maintenance and repair projects, and more. We are currently evaluating bids for school safety modifications. Work will be beginning soon on a new storage facility behind the MPR.
The iPads have arrived! Teachers in grades 5 through 8 have received their iPads and are learning and exploring applications for student use in the fall to integrate technology into the curriculum and to meet 21st century learning skills. Other summer technology projects include upgrading teachers' computers, completing a wireless buildout to enhance connectivity across the campus and establish hard-wire work stations for classrooms in younger grades.
We look forward to seeing all the students and their families soon!

iPads for Students
The school has purchased 80 iPad2s for shared student use to replace the student laptops used over the past several years. For the upcoming year, the iPads will be under a shared use arrangement, two iPad carts, for grades 5-8.
The focus of the iPad program at St. John Bosco School is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century Learner. Excellence in education requires that technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the educational program. Increasing access to technology is essential for that future, and one of the learning tools of twenty-first century students is the iPad computer. The use of iPads is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for high school and college. Standard 7 of the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools states "An excellent Catholic school has a clearly articulated, rigorous curriculum aligned with relevant standards, 21st century skills, and Gospel values, implemented through effective instruction." Additionally, the Standards state that "curriculum and instruction for 21st century learning prepares students to become expert users of technology, able to create, publish, and critique digital products that reflect their understanding of the content and their technologic skills."

Save Your Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels!
Don't forget to save your Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels for Education this summer. We still buy a lot of products that carry these symbols over the summer so keep cutting them out and saving them in a baggy!
How else to collect these items? Ask family members, neighbors, or co-workers. Do parents work in an office setting where the office uses reams of paper? The box tops are usually right on the back of the ream of paper. How about all those boxes of Kleenex in offices and around home? They are also on the bottom of those as well. This is FREE money to the teachers and the school that is just so easy to collect. Please see the attached PDF file that lists all the products that are participating. You never know how many of these items you have at home until you start to look. Thank you for supporting St. John Bosco and BOX TOPS! |
Soul Searching: Journeys into Spirit, by Fr. Joe Hennessy
"Fr. Joe's Soul Searching: Journeys into Spirit, with its many hiking metaphors, stories and images reveals a daring outer and inner exploration of Aisling: God's dream for us. It is deeply personal and autobiographical. Its style is transparent and brutally honest ...As I read through it in one sitting, I felt like I was looking into a mirror and seeing myself with all my vulnerabilities in my own soul searching journey... I am deeply touched and grateful for the holistic message and spirituality of this book." ~Tomas O'Cathalain, Author of The Heart of the Poet.
Fr. Joe is donating half of all proceeds from the sale of his book at St. John Bosco to a scholarship fund for our students. Stop by the front office to purchase your copy.
