Over the summer months, we will be publishing the Bulldog BITE every two weeks rather than weekly. The next issue will be July 8.
First and foremost, Father Gary and I are excited to announce two new additions to the Parish of St. Benedict and St. John Bosco Catholic School.
Mr. Ryan Watson - Assistant Principal
Mr. Watson, a Louisville, Kentucky native, holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Louisville, as well as a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University. He is a certified teacher in Arizona and is highly qualified for middle grade science and structured English immersion K 12. Recently, Mr. Watson has been a junior high math and science teacher at St. Agnes Catholic School in Phoenix. Mr. Watson is a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.
Ms. Mary Pat Waldmann - 6th Grade Mathematics and Science and homeroom Religion Teacher
Ms. Waldmann has extensive experience in teaching middle school mathematics, including general math, pre-algebra and algebra as well as sciences including biology and physics. Recently, she has been a mathematics teacher at St. Mary Basha School in Chandler. Ms. Waldmann is a member of the National Catholic Education Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Ms. Waldmann holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration, both from Arizona State University. Ms. Waldmann is a member of St. Louis the King Parish.
I would also like to highlight two new programs for the school next year. Read the "What's New" section below for information on iPads and our new school lunch provider.

iPads for Students
The school has purchased 80 iPad2s for shared student use to replace the student laptops used over the past several years. For the upcoming year, the iPads will be under a shared use arrangement, two iPad carts, for grades 5-8.
The focus of the iPad program at St. John Bosco School is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century Learner. Excellence in education requires that technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the educational program. Increasing access to technology is essential for that future, and one of the learning tools of twenty-first century students is the iPad computer. The use of iPads is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for high school and college. Standard 7 of the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools states "An excellent Catholic school has a clearly articulated, rigorous curriculum aligned with relevant standards, 21st century skills, and Gospel values, implemented through effective instruction." Additionally, the Standards state that "curriculum and instruction for 21st century learning prepares students to become expert users of technology, able to create, publish, and critique digital products that reflect their understanding of the content and their technologic skills."

Soul Searching: Journeys into Spirit, by Fr. Joe Hennessy (add photo)
"Fr. Joe's Soul Searching: Journeys into Spirit, with its many hiking metaphors, stories and images reveals a daring outer and inner exploration of Aisling: God's dream for us. It is deeply personal and autobiographical. Its style is transparent and brutally honest ...As I read through it in one sitting, I felt like I was looking into a mirror and seeing myself with all my vulnerabilities in my own soul searching journey... I am deeply touched and grateful for the holistic message and spirituality of this book." Tomas O Cathalain, Author of The Heart of the Poet.
Fr. Joe is donating half of all proceeds from the sale of his book at St. John Bosco to a scholarship fund for our students. Stop by the front office to purchase your copy.

Fry's has informed us that they are changing the way they donate money to our school. They will no longer allow us to put money onto re-loadable gift cards after July 27, 2013. The company is switching to a new program that will be tied to your VIP card. You can register your VIP card on their website, and four times a year, Fry's will send St. John Bosco a portion of what you spend in their stores.

First Lego League (FLL) Coach
FLL is looking for a mom or dad to coach the team to an even better season than last year. We took 4th place in the robot challenge at regionals last year! FLL is a team of six boys and girls who build and program LEGO's Mindstorm robots and prepare a project presentation each year from the start of the school year until the first week of December. The role of the coach is to provide guidance to keep the team members on track. You need not be technical - that is for the kids. The new coach will have ongoing support from the previous coaches. For more info, contact John Peterson.
