Principal's Note

Dear Parents,

The Student Council did a great job putting together an assembly for me last week-- Thank you to all the students and their teachers for the many cards of well wishes.  I certainly am going to miss you all!  God continues to bless all of us in our relationships.

Thank you to our PTO for Airworx last week.  What a fun time for the students!

FOO

This Wednesday is our annual $5 Free Dress to benefit Friends of the Orphans.  While we support children that are just like our own-they attend school, they play, they are happy, they have a very different life than our own children-they are without parents, and they live in a facility with 500 other children.  They raise their own food, cook their own meals, and clean their own rooms.  Please support our 11 Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos with a monetary donation on Wednesday.

We have had a number of inquiries since last week's reminder to log your volunteer hours in RenWeb about which companies donate to the school when their employees volunteer. We know that local companies such as Intel, Motorola and CVS offer volunteer matching programs and will make a donation to our school based on the number of volunteer hours you have worked.  For others, you will need to check with your employer for details of their specific program or contact Lisa Watson in the Development Office for more information.

A Message from an Alum

Hi, my name is Michael and I am a member of the SJB Class of 2011 and the Brophy Class of 2015. I would like to ask if you have ever moved before? Did you ever wake up in a strange room only to realize it was your new home? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then I invite you to join me in the Family Promise Program, here at SJB, any evening or night from Sunday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 7. I have chosen this project because I know we make a difference in the lives of these families and children!  We will host families here on campus by bringing, serving and sharing dinner in the MPR, organizing fun time before lights out with activities with you and your family. Whether it be chatting with the families, to helping organize some indoor/outdoor activities, I would love for you to join us. The families spend the night in our makeshift, but comfortable and safe homes, and leave early the next morning to go to their jobs, daycare and camps. We would like an RSVP for a specific evening, so we can fill each with several families. Give the gift of your time to people who appreciate it the most! You can contact me at mryan15@brophybroncos.org.  We have sign-ups for the Week of June 23 and for the Week of June 30th.

New "Old Logo" Polo Shirts for Sale

We have a limited supply of new old logo polo shirts for sale for $5 each in the front office.  Although these polos have the old logo they are grandfathered in and can be worn as long as they are in good condition.  Please stop by the front office if you are interested.

Campus Safety - Important!

As we are coming toward the end of the school year please remember that it is extremely important that you check in at the office during school hours.  It is especially vital that if you are going to stay on campus past 8 am the office has you signed in.  Parent volunteers who monitor gates around campus are asked to question and direct to the office anyone that is entering campus without a student.  We know it is hard to pass by a gate that might be temporarily open but it is important for the safety of our campus and our students that the office has you logged in and you are wearing a visitor sticker. Thank you!

Three SJB Students Recognized by Johns Hopkins University for Academic Excellence

7th grader Taylor G., 4th graders Adam C. and Christianna G. were recently honored as three of the brightest young students in the nation at a statewide awards ceremony for academically advanced children sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

The Center honored them for their exceptional performances on a rigorous, above grade level test given to academically talented second through eighth grade students.

During the CTY Talent Search, which is going on now, advanced young learners take above grade level tests designed for older students as a means of gaining insight into their abilities. Seventh and eighth graders take the SAT or ACT-the same tests used for college admissions. These students, along with second through sixth graders, can take the School and College Ability Test (SCAT), an above level test.

The students from St. John Bosco Catholic School were among the 40,000 students from over 120 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only 25 to 30 percent of students who participate earned an invitation to a CTY Awards Ceremony where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential.  Most students honored in the CTY Award Ceremonies also qualified academically for CTY's summer courses and online classes.

St. John Bosco was proud to have 116 students eligible to participate in the talent search.  Twenty-one of those students chose to pursue the talent search.  We are extremely proud to have three St. John Bosco students receive an award for High Honors. Other students receiving awards for the second level of Honors include Danielle P. (8th grade) and Steven W. (4th), Kevin N, (4th), and William M. (4th). Taylor G. and her parents were able to travel to Tucson to be honored in the Awards Ceremony at the University of Arizona, sponsored by the School of Engineering.

For more information about enrolling in the CTY Talent Search, go to www.cty.jhu.edu and respond to the email after your child's ITBS results in November.

Science Detectives Coming Next Year!

We are pleased to announce the ASU program of Science Detectives will be offered after school on Mondays for the school year 2013-2014.

Science Detectives is an after school program created by ASU undergraduates. Its goal is to spark interest in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields at a younger age with the hope that more children will seek out higher degrees. Elementary school students participate in weekly hands-on lessons planned and lead by ASU students that explore real-world applications of physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematical analysis. The program lasts from six to ten weeks, giving the elementary school students sufficient time to master the advanced curriculum and build familiarity with the scientific method. We currently have 9 teams visiting 6 elementary schools in the Tempe and Kyrene school districts. Our emphasis throughout the program is on inquiry. We encourage our students to question the world around them, create explanations for observable phenomena, and then build experiments to test their hypotheses.

More information can be found on our website: sciencedetectives.org.
