Principal Note

Dear Parents,

Volunteering at school shows children that we are all part of a Christian community that centers around their faith and academics.  It also helps teach children how important it is to give back to the community we are part of and helps them build ownership in their school. Students whose parents are involved enjoy school more!  Parents and students have common discussion points and a common frame of reference during dinner table conversations.  Volunteering isn't just in the classroom either. You have helped with the PTO, Moms' Club, Dads' Club, other classrooms, the Library, making copies, field trips, around the campus, the playground and the lunchroom. Whatever you can do, you have done. Your child has seen you here and knowing that makes all the difference. Thank you from the teachers and the administration!

Don't forget to apply if your company (Intel) pays cash to the school for the hours you volunteer.  Please take a moment, if you haven't done it already and log your hours into RenWeb: Go to your RenWeb main screen, Click Family Information on the left, select your name, click the Service Hour tab, click Add Service Hours

MAP Testing

MAP Testing continues this week, mostly for students in grades 5 and 6.  We continue to learn more about ourselves and about this snapshot look at learning. As a reminder from the fall and winter sessions, the test is Adaptive.  As students answer a question correctly, the next question is more difficult. If their answer is wrong, the next question is easier.  There are approximately 40 questions on each test, and takes anywhere from 15 minutes in the lower grades to 60 minutes in 8th grade to complete a session. One of the things we learned in the Winter testing sessions is that students who are not engaged in the test don't do "as well" as those who took their time by using scratch paper and reading the questions carefully. It became a question of motivation-- in order to show their true level, they had to want to represent their knowledge accurately.   Please encourage your student at home to do their best.

Informal Q & A

The last Informal Q and A will be on Thursday, May 16th at 6:00 pm in the Library. Thank you for your attendance and insight throughout the year.

Kudos to our Students

6th grader, Marianne B. was awarded the Saint Clare of
Assisi Award from Corpus Christi on May 5, 2013.  Marianne was
recognized for her "consistent promotion of harmony, goodwill,
understanding, and charity through parish ministry/organization for the
overall benefit of the parish and its parishioners." What an honor!

7th grader, Taylor G., was recently honored as one of the brightest young students in the nation at a statewide awards ceremony for academically advanced children sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

The Center honored Taylor, a participant in the CTY Talent Search, for her exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to academically talented second-through-eighth-grade students.

Taylor was one of more than 40,000 students from over 120 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only 25 to 30 percent of students who participated earned an invitation to a CTY Awards Ceremony where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential. Most students honored in 2013 CTY Award

School Spotlight

Spread the word about the School Spotlight on Tuesday, May 21 at 9 AM .  To register, click here.

St. John Bosco Catholic School provides a faith based, academically focused education for children 4 to 14 years old. You can pass along the 5 "C"s of St. John Bosco Catholic School.

Christ- What makes St. John Bosco unique from public and private schools is that we pray and grow in faith together, as we share in our belief of God.

Child- St. John Bosco focuses on developing the "whole child" through academic excellence, serving others and growing in faith.  SJB is where FAITH is formed and LEADERS are born.

Curriculum - Our students benefit from a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for success in high school, college and career.  The curriculum aligns with Common Core standards, teaches 21st century skills, and Gospel values.

Community - Our St. John Bosco community is like a large family with active parents, caring and skilled teachers and a friendly staff dedicated to serving the students and others.  Families build lifelong friendships.

Campus - Our St. John Bosco campus is a beautiful, safe environment.  The classrooms are bright with natural light and there is plenty of open space for gathering, playing and for sports.

Christian Service Award Application and Information

Now is a good time to take a look at the application process for the Christian Service Award.  The application is due October 15th of the 8th grade year, but it is time-consuming to collect all the pieces.  The summer between 7th and 8th grade is a great time to start working on the details: requesting letters of recommendation, documenting the service and begin writing the essay.  The summer between 6th and 7th grade can be dedicated to your service in parish and the community. For more information, click  here.

Health Office

As the school year winds down and the temperatures raise, please send your student with a water bottle everyday. Also apply sunscreen in the morning every day.  They can wear a hat, but remind them not to share it.  Please pick up any medication at the end of the school year.  We are required to dispose of all medication not picked up. We have lent out many shirts and PE shorts that have not been returned to us.  Please look through your students uniforms and return to us any pieces they may have borrowed.

Scrip News

-We have a new vendor and you're going to be excited - Oregano's!  Oregano's cards come in $25 increments and earn 10%.

-Congratulations to Dorothy Abril! She is the SJB staff person who bought the most scrip for the year.  We are so grateful to her for always being a great supporter of our program.

-Our Spring Promotion will run from May 14-31.  If you buy scrip during this time, you will be entered to win a free $10 gift card of your choice or 100% of your earnings.  We hope to see you at our window soon.

Save the Date

Saturday, October 19th will be the Harvest Festival sponsored by SJB PTO & St. Benedict's Parish. This old fashioned festival will have all the fun stuff we've always had: bouncies, petting zoo, costume contest, magician, games etc.  Additionally we will have an adult beer garden and several new additions that will make the 2013 Harvest Festival one to remember. The Harvest Festival has always been used not as a fundraiser, but as a goodwill event for the entire school community. Proceeds from past SJB Harvest Fests have paid for: a shade structure, picnic tables on campus, smart boards, teacher continuing education etc.

Please join us for a Kick-Off meeting in the SJB library May 30th at 6:30PM to get the ball rolling. Refreshments will be served & babysitting will be provided. Please RSVP if you'd like to use the child care to Laurie Pretzman, Harvest Festival Chairperson at rpretzman@cox.net.

Summer Programs

This summer, St. John Bosco has a wonderful menu of summer camps to include Vacation Bible School, K-Kamp, Lego Camp, SciPrenuer Science and an academic skills camp.  Follow the link for more information.

Vacation Bible School

Students who are on campus from June 17-21 between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon must be registered for Vacation Bible School.  The 15 hours of programming is $45, click here to register (slightly less than being in MAP during those same hours). All MAP employees are working the VBS during those hours, so if you do not register, plan on keeping your child at home.

Attention Parents

We are in need of adult Crew Leader volunteers for Vacation Bible School (VBS) June 17 - 21 from 8:30 - 12:30 each day.  A Crew Leader loves the Lord and loves children. Each day at VBS you'll visit different activities with a group of five children. You're not in charge of preparing or teaching activities; you just get to be there and help kids enjoy the activities as you shepherd the members of your crew. Remember you can get a start on your service hours for next year by helping out. If interested please contact Mrs. Douglas at vbs@stbenedict.org.

Attention 8th Graders going into high school next year.

We need your help at Vacation Bible School (VBS) June 17 - 21 from 9:00 - 12:00. Come help Kindergarten through 5th grade learn more about our blessed Lord and have fun at the same time. If interested please contact Mrs. Douglas at vbs@stbenedict.org.

Attention all Jr. High Parents.

J.A.M., our Jr. High youth ministry program, is offering a new experience this summer for all incoming 6, 7, & 8th graders. Space is limited to 30 spots and is on a first come first serve basis.

The event will run June 17 - 21 from 9 am - 12 pm. Contact  Patrick Mooney or get the details on our  Youth Ministry Facebook page

Challenge Summer Day Camp 'CONNECT'will be held at St. Anne's Parish in Gilbert from June 24th-28th.

Challenge is a Catholic Girls' Club that seeks to form girls from 10-16 in all dimensions of their person - spiritual, apostolic, human and intellectual - so that they can become better Christians and leaders in their faith. Every summer your daughters have an opportunity to participate in a week long camp where they can develop healthy friendships with other Catholic girls while they grow together in spirit and character. It will be a lot of fun - but also very enriching! We've seen that the girls grow more in a week of camp than a whole year of Challenge meetings, because they are immersed in this great environment for a longer period of time. Through lively talks, workshops, small group discussions, prayer, activities, and games we want the girls to be able to connect with others, God, and the Church.

Prayer and Spiritual formation: Gospel reflection by groups, decade of the rosary, opportunity for confession, and focus on how to connect with God, the Church, yourself, and others.

Social and Character building: Teamwork activities such as skits, competitions & games, listening skills, opportunities for discovering & sharing personal gifts.

Outside of parish recreation: On Wednesday June 26th the girls will have an all-day outing to Amazing Jake's in Mesa to have a fun time connecting with each other.

Role models who will serve as leaders at camp: Challenge Team Leaders and young adults of proven moral and spiritual integrity are volunteering to serve as counselors. A few mothers have offered to come as chaperones and ensure that the daily activities run smoothly.  Consecrated women will lead the sessions, prayers, and offer personal spiritual mentoring to each of the girls.

We hope that your daughters will be able to come and join us for an incredible week of recreation and spiritual growth surrounded by other Catholic girls from around the state. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question. The registration form with payment and permission slip is due June 7th. God Bless you!
