Welcome Fr. Binta

Fr. Bob Welcome to Father Bob Binta to the Parish of St. Benedict and the St. John Bosco Community!  Father Binta is from Uganda and has been serving in the Diocese of Phoenix in the role of the Parochial Vicar at St. Paul Catholic Church in Phoenix.  Father Binta attended a seminary high school and then earned degrees in philosophy and sacred theology. He was ordained a priest in 1991. Later, Father Binta attended the University of Notre Dame where he obtained a master's degree in business administration.

Principal Note

MAP testing begins this week for Grades 3-8. We continue to learn more about ourselves and about this snapshot look at learning.  Let me remind you from the fall and winter sessions that the test is Adaptive.  As students answer a question correctly, the next question is more difficult. If their answer is wrong, the next question is easier.  There are 40 questions on each test, and takes anywhere from 15 minutes in the lower grades to 60 minutes in 8th grade to complete a session. One of the things we learned in the Winter testing sessions, is that students who are not engaged in the test don't do "as well" as those who took their time by using scratch paper and reading the questions carefully. It became a question of motivation-- in order to show their true level, they had to want to represent their knowledge accurately.   Please encourage your student at home to do their best.

The last Informal Q and A will be on Thursday, May 16th at 6:00 pm in the Library. Thank you for your attendance, and insight throughout the year.

Save the Date: Fare Thee Well Fr. Gary
Please plan to join us for our farewell celebration for Fr. Gary.  Dig out your favorite tie-dye shirt and gather with us in the MPR on Friday, May 17 for an open-house style evening.  Appetizers and drinks will be served.  Look for an official invite this week!

In the meantime, so that we can plan accordingly, please let us know if you and your family are coming.  (If you already did this on the St. Benedict update, there is no need to inform us again, we've got you covered.  Thanks!)

Celebrating Your Generosity

Rice Bowls

As part of our Lenten promises, we participated in the Rice Bowls campaign that supports Catholic Relief services around the world.  St. John Bosco students collected over $1400 toward this effort.  Our prayer, fasting and almsgiving make a difference in our own lives, but also in the lives of others.
Bake Sale

Lemonade and Bake Sale

Over $1,700 was raised on Friday to support Karley S.  It brought  goosebumps, tears and joy to many seeing the support for others.  Thank you St. John Bosco Community!

Catholic Education Arizona

Congratulations on a 150% increase and thank you to everyone who took advantage of the school tuition tax credit.  $343,872 was designated to St. John Bosco Catholic School by school families, parishioners and friends.  This is $343,872 dollars that will be available to you as Scholarships for next year!  If you didn't apply, or if you know someone who wants their children in Catholic school but doesn't think they can afford it, contact Mimi Condon at 480-219-4845 or mcondon@sjbosco.org

  Congratulations!

In Sports

A huge congratulations to our undefeated 7th grade baseball team for winning the CYAA Baseball Championship Tournament.  They finished their season with a 9-1 win over St. Simon & Jude.  Coach Westley, Coach Spitza, and interim Coach LaRusso were extremely proud of how our boys carried themselves with character throughout the playoffs.  Great season Bulldogs!

Battle of the Books

The fifth grade Battle of the Books team of Noah D., Sean R., and John M. represented St. John Bosco at the Chandler semifinals.  The boys placed fourth, but had an amazing battle.  They had an early setback, but then calmly answered every question correctly. They made quite an impression on the battle audience.

I know we will see these boys back again next year.  How about you?  Mrs. Harvey will be posting the 2013-14 Battle books on the library page in June.  Read the books over the summer and join the fun!
Love our community?  Help spread the word and earn $300!

We hear it over and over - our community is amazing!  Do you have friends that do not have their children at St. John Bosco Catholic School? Let them know about our next Spotlight- including visits to the classrooms, a look at the curriculum and a chance to ask questions about our school and the available scholarships. If that friend registers their child(ren) at St. John Bosco, we will give you $300 to use for your tuition or re-registration!

Our next Spotlight is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21st at 9:00 am.  Students of all ages are welcome to attend, although openings are limited in some grades.

Summer Programs

This summer, St. John Bosco has a wonderful menu of summer camps to include Vacation Bible School, K-Kamp, Lego Camp, SciPrenuer Science and an academic skills camp.  Follow the link for more information.

Vacation Bible School

Students who are on campus from June 17-21 between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon must be registered for Vacation Bible School.  The 15 hours of programming is $45, click here to register (slightly less than being in MAP during those same hours). All MAP employees are working the VBS during those hours, so if you do not register, plan on keeping your child at home.

Attention Parents

We are in need of adult Crew Leader volunteers for Vacation Bible School (VBS) June 17 - 21 from 8:30 - 12:30 each day.  A Crew Leader loves the Lord and loves children. Each day at VBS you'll visit different activities with a group of five children. You're not in charge of preparing or teaching activities; you just get to be there and help kids enjoy the activities as you shepherd the members of your crew. Remember you can get a start on your service hours for next year by helping out. If interested please contact Mrs. Douglas at vbs@stbenedict.org.

Attention 8th Graders going into high school next year.

We need your help at Vacation Bible School (VBS) June 17 - 21 from 9:00 - 12:00. Come help Kindergarten through 5th grade learn more about our blessed Lord and have fun at the same time. If interested please contact Mrs. Douglas at vbs@stbenedict.org.

Attention all Jr. High Parents.

J.A.M., our Jr. High youth ministry program, is offering a new experience this summer for all incoming 6, 7, & 8th graders. Space is limited to 30 spots and is on a first come first serve basis.

The event will run June 17 - 21 from 9 am - 12 pm. Contact  Patrick Mooney or get the details on our  Youth Ministry Facebook page
