Principal Note
Congratulations to Mrs. Silver, who will be our new school leader next year! Mrs. Silver will continue in the classroom with the sixth graders for the rest of the school year and continue to serve as the Assistant Principal, but is also working collaboratively with me towards an effective school leadership transition.

Mrs. Molina and her family will be moving out of state this summer, so we have placed a job posting on the Catholic Schools Office Website for her position.

Mrs. Silver's teaching position will also become vacant and there will be a posting for the Assistant Principal for next year. Mrs. Silver is working with the Diocese with respect to this posting and is forming an interview team for this hiring representative of the school's interests. Both interview teams will seek well-qualified candidates with attributes founded in our mission statement and school philosophy.

Save the Date: Fare Thee Well Fr. Gary
Please plan to join us for our farewell celebration for Fr. Gary.  Dig out your favorite tie-dye shirt and gather with us in the MPR on Friday, May 17 for an open-house style evening.  Appetizers and drinks will be served.  Look for an official invite this week!

In the meantime, so that we can plan accordingly, please let us know if you and your family are coming.  (If you already did this on the St. Benedict update, there is no need to inform us again, we've got you covered.  Thanks!)

Helping Our Families In Need
There has been a wonderful outpouring of offers for assistance to help the Sichmeller Family. This Friday there will be a bake sale and lemonade stand from 1:00-2:00 in front of the school. You can sign up to help with baked goods, set up, and/or selling.

We are trying to coordinate the efforts a bit so that our incredibly generous community can support the family in this long journey, but that we are not "tripping over ourselves" as we did this last week with the colors for cancer (that was "on" in some classes, but not in others).

It is a testament to our community that everyone wants to help, but we must recognize that it takes some intentionality to mobilize 500 students, the associated families and 60 staff. If you or your child have a project they would like to suggest, please use the Activity Request Form.
Late Thank You
We inadvertently missed thanking Gold Crown Promotions in the BITE last week for their Sponsorship for the Bosco. Our sincerest apologies. If there is anyone else, please let us know. We really do appreciate your ongoing support and service.

May Crowning
The First Grade classes will be leading the school in a May Crowning Celebration Thursday, May 2 at 8:15 in the morning. We are going to hold it in the church this year. Everyone is invited to bring a flower to present to Mary. Each class will have a representative who will collect the flowers from their own class before the ceremony begins. They will then bring the class vase over to the statue of Mary when invited to do so.
Calendar Meeting
The 2013 -2014 Calendar Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 at 6:00 in the Library. Dads' Club, Moms' Club, PTO, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and others wanting to plan the year of events should plan on sending a representative.

School events, such as Curriculum Nights, Board Meetings will be available on the "School" Calendar by the end of April.

Essentially, meetings and events associated with the school will be scheduled mainly on Mondays and Wednesdays during the week. This will allow us to schedule around sacraments and in cooperation with the parish.

Earth Week Update - JUICE POUCH COLLECTION

Girl Scout Troop 192 has teamed up with CAP to recycle juice pouches such as Capri Sun and Honest Kids. We will continue to collect juice pouches through June 6th to send to TERRACYCLE, where they will be made into useful products such as backpacks, handbags and pencil holders. With every juice pouch collected, we earn money for the school as well as saving the landfills from more non-recyclable trash.

As of the end of Earth Week, we have collected over 2000 juice pouches. Congratulations SJB students! This earns $.02 per pouch for school environmental projects. Thank you to everyone who contributes pouches!
FAMILY PROMISE Returns to St. Benedict and St. John Bosco
June 23 - July 7

The Parish of St. Benedict and St. John Bosco Catholic School will again host families through the Family Promise program, from June 23 through July 7. Dozens of families and individuals from our parish and school helped make our hosting last summer a joyful and rewarding experience. If you did not participate, this is your chance to see how easy it is to serve some of our brothers and sisters in need.

Family Promise has a long, successful record of providing families who have lost their homes with the tools and training to get back on their feet. Because there is a shortage of emergency shelter for homeless families in the Valley, faith communities help provide meals and overnight lodging to families who have been accepted into this rigorous program. Visit the Family Promise website for more details.

It's Easy to Help!
Three to four families (about 16 people) will have an evening meal and stay overnight on the school campus. We need you and your family, friends or ministry group for an evening to provide a meal and fellowship to the families. We also need volunteers to serve as overnight hosts (we provide comfy beds for you to sleep), and/or help with set up, clean up and laundering bedding at the end of each week.

Please consider assisting in this effort, as we create a safe, welcoming environment for families in need. To help, call Pat and Rochelle Impiccini at 480.496.9237 or 480.202.8652. You can also email Pat.

Registration is open for this year's summer camp out on Mt. Lemmon. We will once again be at the Whitetail Campground on Mt. Lemmon near Tucson Friday through Sunday.

Whitetail Campground is probably the most modern campground in the state with a large, lighted pavilion with electric outlets, large charcoal grills, and excellent tent site platforms. At 8,000 feet elevation, enjoy the cool, crisp mountain air. No prior camping experience is necessary and there will be plenty of experienced campers on hand to help out any rookies.

The fee is $20 per family with a limit of 15 families.

Tech Tips for Parents
SOCIAL MEDIA:  Safe and Responsible Use of Technology

Do you remember when the idea of having your child on My Space, then Facebook was terrifying? Why were there so many dangers, and why were these Social Media sites so abused by children, tweens and teens? Because parents weren't around! Now, parents are all over FaceBook, "Friends" with their children, liking each other's pictures and posts. Kids don't hide behind Facebook any more, too many eyes. But, with kids being kids, they are finding (creating) other sites... Instagram, SnapChat and Ask.FM... to experiment with what is socially acceptable and navigating norms.

We recently became aware of a social networking site called ASK.FM that apparently many of our students have. ASK.FM allows users to send and received anonymous questions and comments. Users can connect to this website through other social media sites including Facebook and Instagram accounts.

This website allows for online conversations and does not require users to reveal their identities. Some comments are positive, but with the anonymity comes hurtful and inappropriate material as well.

Opportunities for cyber-bullying abound on ASK.FM. One mother described it as a "sinister website that pits friend against friend". Sadly, many victims of negative ASK.FM actually know their tormentors - often disgruntled or insecure peers who are often 'friends' with their victims on other sites such as Facebook but reveal a less kind and bolder side when on ASK.FM where they have the option of hiding their identity. Bullied youngsters are left agonizing, not knowing which of their friends has turned against them. Our position is that the unintended consequences of these websites absolutely outweigh the positive.

We realize that as a school, we cannot regulate which social media sites parents allow their children to access. However, be aware ASK.FM does not monitor its site and at sign-up, the users agree to utilize the service at their own risk. ASK plainly states that it shall have no liability for content that one may find objectionable, obscene or in poor taste. Check your child's social media sites to see if they registered to link to ASK.FM.

We implore you to monitor what your children are doing online. Watch that your child is not the bully or being bullied. Every parent must monitor their children's internet and phone activity. Keep the computer in a common area and require the passwords to their phone, email, Facebook (look for duplicate accounts), follow them on Instagram and Ask.FM, and use the password intermittently to provide proximity that lets children, tweens and teens know that adults are watching.

Here is another new App for parents to be aware of and why.
