Principal's Note
This Thursday, February 7, is the 7th & 8th grade science fair in the MPR. Attendance is mandatory for 7th & 8th grade students and all others are invited. The students and their parents will tell others that the Science Fair is quite intense, not just for students and parents, but for the teachers too, and this time of year many of us wonder if it is worth it.  Yet, Science Fair covers so many of the standards of the Inquiry Process, research, comprehending informational text, and writing, technology as a tool and representing data.  Independent Projects also foster a student's interest and require a depth of knowledge that is a realistic representation of future endeavors for students.  A note from a parent after the event last year clearly expresses what we are trying to accomplish, "I wanted to thank you for the Science Fair last night.  You probably hear more complaints than compliments, but I'm confident working on research papers now will be a huge help to them in high school and college.  I know my daughter  is now FAR more prepared to write a research paper than I was at her age.  That's going to pay dividends throughout the rest of her school years, and possibly into her professional life as well."
The 5th and 6th grade event will be held on February 21  and the Pre-K-4 event is scheduled for March 6. The purpose and focus of each of these is slightly different and intended to be developmental -- but each is an opportunity for students to share what they have learned.

Diocesan Spelling Bee
Danielle P. represented St. John Bosco School  with poise and dignity at the Diocese of Phoenix spelling bee .  She was one of the last five spellers, eliminated in the eleventh round with the word espionage.  This was Danielle's second year representing SJB.  We are so proud of her efforts and achievements.
Cans Across Campus
Sincere thanks to all who donated to our Cans Across Campus event. The students demonstrated Catholic values in every aspect of this endeavor. The shelves at St. Benedict's, St. Vincent de Paul Pantry are once again stocked. A note from the Vincentians....

It was a GREAT food drive!!!! Thanks to all who helped. We had a great crew and it all went very smoothly. LOTS of donations and the students all came into the pantry to see for themselves where their donations were going. All very well behaved and having a good time. And the weather was great too - thanks for all the prayers. I would venture to say that a good time was had by all! - Rusti

Making Catholic Education More Affordable for Your Family
Join us!  Monday, February 4 at 6:30 pm in the Library
Do you love having your children in a Catholic school but struggle with making it happen financially?  We have a way to help.  Please join us on Monday, February 4, to hear a presentation on utilizing Donor Recommend Fundraising.  Our speaker will give you the inside scoop of exactly how to apply, solicit, and get tuition assistance using donor recommended funding.
Our goal for this evening is to send you home with all the resources you will need to make Catholic Education more affordable for you and your family!
Modern-Day Martyrs, Come and Be Inspired!
Please join us for an uplifting presentation Wednesday, February 6, after the 8:15 am mass, by longtime Catholic Sun columnist Joyce Coronel and learn about a Chaldean Catholic priest, Fr. Ragheed Ganni, martyred in Iraq for the faith.  His cousin, Msgr. Felix Shabi, is Corbishop of the Chaldean Catholic Vicariate of Arizona.
You will learn about the vibrant faith of what has come to be known as "The Church of Martyrs" as well as the heartbreaking struggles of the Chaldean (Eastern Rite) Catholics, many of whom live right here among us in Phoenix.
More than half the Christian population has left Iraq since 2003, fleeing violence and growing persecution. Fr. Ganni was killed along with three deacons by those who vow to eradicate Christianity from the Middle East.
Advisory Board
St John Bosco School Advisory Board is beginning the process of actively seeking new members for 2013-14.  We would love to have you share your time & talents representing our school community.  Members must commit to serving for three years and can be involved in one of several of our active committees -- Finance, Facilities, Community & more!  We come together in a monthly advisory meeting with Father Gary and Principal Conner in pursuit of Excellence in Academics, Faith and Community Experience.    Please see link or contact bridgetjehle@cox.net for further questions.
Save the Date- Whole Family Event
On March 15 the School Families are invited to lead the Stations of the Cross at the Parish of St. Benedict.  Our Prayer Journey has each family lead a station, and there is typically a parent and a child reflection. There will be a sign up as we approach.  Immediately following the Stations of the Cross is a simple soup and bread meal.  New this year, will be a Taize (ta-zay) Prayer service to follow.  This is a family event, and a great way to share, or experience for the first time, a tradition in our Catholic Faith.  Add the date to your calendars now for March 15th starting at 6 p.m.
Field Day
This year Field Day will be on February 28th from 8:30 to 11:00.  We need volunteers and snacks!  Please see the sign up genius link for more information.
Palms:
Please bring in your old palms to the St. Benedict front office.  As long as we have them by Friday, February 8, they will be burned and used during our Ash Wednesday celebrations.
Thank you!
