Principal's Note
Yesterday was our St. John Bosco Open House Safari- because we are Wild About Learning. The Safari theme was a hit, as the teachers, the ambassadors and parents had great fun with it.  We have received very positive feedback from a number of the families who attended. Thank you to our parent leadership who attended and helped out- Advisory Board, PTO, Dads' Club, Moms' Club and all the student club leaders.  Our Ambassadors were commended for their poise, knowledge and excitement for school! Thank you to our school staff and teachers who proudly represented the school. The rain mostly cooperated, but we may have missed a few attendees.  If you know someone who missed the Open House Safari, please let them know they can still inquire through the website or by calling 480-219-4853.

School News
Welcome to Catholic Schools Week!
The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2013 is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards." The annual observance started yesterday and runs all week. Schools all across the United States celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large.
The 2013 theme supports the recent launch of the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, that ensure the effective operation and responsible governance Catholic schools across the country, thus promoting high academic standards and Catholic identity. The logo designed for the week illustrates a chart of steady growth culminating in the highest achievement of all, a cross representing the faith that underscores all Catholic education.
Cans Across Campus
A traditional part of Catholic Schools Week here at St. John Bosco is our Cans Across Campus event.  Annually, our school teams up with St. Benedict Church and St. Vincent de Paul to provide food and non-food items for families right here in our own community who are struggling to pay for basic necessities.  This year's event will be held on Thursday, January 31, the Feast Day of Saint John Bosco.   A SVdP speaker attended a recent Mass and explained the event to the students and items are already beginning to fill our boxes!!  Please search your student's back pack for a red flier outlining the event and suggesting items that your family may be able to donate. The students will walk to St. Benedict with their class on January 31 and place the donated items in the pantry themselves.  If each student could bring in at least one item, we would have over 500 items to distribute to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
To those given much, much is expected. Luke 12:48.
MAP (Measure of Academic Progress)
MAP reports went home in most grades last week with a reflection from the student and a letter from Mrs. Conner.  Please see the parent information at this link on our website regarding these assessments.
Conferences
Conferences will be held on Tuesday, January 29th and Wednesday, January 30th during Catholic Schools Week. Unlike the fall conferences, these conferences are on an as-needed basis by teacher request.  If parents would like to conference with a teacher or teaching team you can absolutely do so. Both days are noon release for the school.  No lunch is being served, and MAP is available from noon - 6 p.m. Please refer to teacher newsletters for specific instructions and/or links to schedule a conference.

St. John Bosco 5 C's
Now is the time of year that families are making the decision about where to send their children for the upcoming school year.  Whether it's a preschooler looking for a permanent school or an older child looking for a change, you may be asked "Why do you send your child to St. John Bosco?"  Obviously everyone can answer that, but the Communications Committee thought it would be helpful to create an easy-to-remember mnemonic with the key points that reportedly make all of us proud to be part of the SJB community.  I hope you find it useful:
  • Christ- What make St. John Bosco unique from other public and private schools is the ability to pray and grow in faith together, as we share in our belief of God.
  • Curriculum - Our kids benefit from a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for success in high school, college and career.  The curriculum aligns with Common Core standards, teaches 21st century skills, and Gospel values.  Teacher/parent communication is open and encouraged and skills are assessed throughout the year, not once a year.
  • Community - Our St. John Bosco community is like a large family with active parents, caring and skilled teachers and a friendly staff all dedicated to serving my kids and others.  People here know my kids and they know our family.  In a big place like Phoenix, that's important.
  • Campus - Our St. John Bosco campus is a beautiful, safe environment.  The classrooms are bright with natural light and there is lots of open space for gathering, playing and for sports.  I would love to spend my days there.
  • Child- St. John Bosco focuses on developing my "whole child" through academic excellence, serving others and growing in faith.  SJB is where FAITH is formed and LEADERS are born.
Thank you Communications Committee for your work putting this together!

Save the Date- Whole Family Event
On March 15 the School Families are invited to lead the Stations of the Cross at the Parish of St. Benedict.  Our Prayer Journey has each family lead a station, and there is typically a parent and a child reflection. There will be a sign up as we approach.  Immediately following the Stations of the Cross is a simple soup and bread meal.  New this year, will be a Taize (ta-zay) Prayer service to follow.  This is a family event, and a great way to share, or experience for the first time, a tradition in our Catholic Faith.  Add the date to your calendars now for March 15th starting at 6 p.m.
Scrip News
Did you  know that you can earn scrip credit by registering your Safeway Club card or other credit cards with Escrip?  Lots of families at St. John Bosco already do it.  Go to www.escrip.com for more information.
  • Sorry but we can no longer get Famous Dave's scrip. We have removed it from our order forms.
  • A few lucky families won our Christmas promotion but have not picked up their free $10 gift card.    Check our website to see if you are a winner!
To clarify a part of the email you saw from Mrs. Conner on Friday,
Using a Visa Credit Card to load Fry's is OK
Using a Fry's Gift Card to buy a Visa gift card is OK
Using the Visa Gift Card to shop at Fry's, pay your  bills, shop at other stores, or buy other scrip is GREAT- which is what we are advocate as a effective way  to use the program
However... Using a Visa Gift Card, to buy a Fry's Gift Card, to buy a Visa Gift card, to buy a Fry's Gift Card, to buy a Visa Gift Card, is NOT OK.
