Principal's Note
At Mass last Friday we had a representative from St. Vincent de Paul come and talk about our upcoming Cans across the Campus Drive.  Here is what she shared with the students....

My name is Dorothy Sullivan. I am speaking to you this morning on behalf of the Vincentians of St. Benedicts Conference and the clients we serve.  I want you to think about something.....

Imagine how you would feel if you opened your home pantry to get breakfast or an after school snack - and the pantry was empty?  Imagine how you would feel if soap, toothpaste, shampoo - even toilet paper were luxuries that your family could not afford to buy?

Sadly, this is a real situation for families in need when they must decide whether to pay rent, keep heat and lights on - or buy groceries and toiletries.

Luckily, no one living in the St. Benedict parish boundary ever has to see an empty food cabinet because people like St. John Bosco schoolchildren care, and will help these families.  On Thursday, January 31, during our Catholic Schools Week celebration, our students will participate in the annual Cans Across Campus community service event.

Everyone in need living in our boundaries is welcome at our pantry - no exceptions! All are treated with love and respect - just as Jesus would treat them.  In the last year, more than 400 families came to our pantry for help.  50 families received Turkeys and all the fixings for their Thanksgiving dinners. 21 of these families had a special Christmas because you and your families provided gifts to them through the Adopt-a-Family Program.

We talk to our pantry clients as they load up grocery bags and we often learn of other ways we might help them.  If you hear of a family having financial difficulty, your parents can suggest that the person in need call SVdP at the church office.

I am here to ask you - as you have in previous years - to help restock our pantry store.  Ideas for what to bring are on this flyer which will go home with you today. Grades Pre-K through 4 are asked to bring food items.  Staff and Grades 5 through 8 are asked to bring non-food items.  Please check the expiration dates and don't bring expired food!

The Vincentians look forward to welcoming you to our pantry on Cans across Campus Day.

You may begin bringing in the donations starting now.   Thank you, families at St. John Bosco, for helping students to recognize and live their call to help others.

Conferences
Conferences will be held on Tuesday, January 29th and Wednesday, January 30th during Catholic Schools Week. Unlike the fall conferences, these conferences are on an as-needed basis by teacher request.  If parents would like to conference with a teacher or teaching team you can absolutely do so. Both days are noon release for the school.  No lunch is being served, and MAP is available from noon - 6 p.m. Please refer to teacher newsletters for specific instructions and/or links to schedule a conference.

Reading Program
Our Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes have completed the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills) assessment.  Students have shown tremendous progress in their reading development! Classes have seen as much as 20% growth in these specific early literacy skills.  Congratulations teacher, students and parents for all the hard work you have put into reading!  Teachers have been able to take the data from this assessment and further differentiate the reading instruction for the students in their class.   For more information about DIBELS, please visit:   http://dibels.org/dibels.html
MAP Reports Going Home this week for Students in 3rd - 8th
MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) reports are being sent home this week with your child. You will find a note from Mrs. Conner that includes some talking points and discussion starters for you and your child.  We also had the children write a reflection on the results. The report compares Fall and Winter RIT scores in the areas of Math, Reading and Language Usage.
MAP assessments are not tests that determine Mastery.  Rather, MAP assessments provide teachers with students' instructional levels.  These assessments are given for internal accountability, so that teachers have information about what students are ready to learn.  The purpose of the assessments is to guide instruction.
The Measure of Academic Progress scores are one of many tools used by St. John Bosco to evaluate student learning in addition to ITBS, DIBELS, and formal and informal classroom assessment.
You can find out more about the MAP Assessments in the Parent Toolkit

Save the Date- Whole Family Event
On March 15 the School Families are invited to lead the Stations of the Cross at the Parish of St. Benedict.  Our Prayer Journey has each family lead a station, and there is typically a parent and a child reflection. There will be a sign up as we approach.  Immediately following the Stations of the Cross is a simple soup and bread meal.  New this year, will be a Taize (ta-zay) Prayer service to follow.  This is a family event, and a great way to share, or experience for the first time, a tradition in our Catholic Faith.  Add the date to your calendars now for March 15th starting at 6 p.m.
Cans Across Campus
Each year, during Catholic Schools Week, St. John Bosco holds our Cans Across Campus community event.  Every single student and staff member at the school will be asked to bring a food or non-food item(s) to school by Thursday, January 31. On that day,  the entire school will walk over to St. Benedict's St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and stock the shelves with the donated items.  Items will be distributed to SVdP clients in our parish.  The typically clients are families like many of us, who have come upon a temporary difficult period (loss of job, illness, lack of transportation, housing issues). SVdP provides a bit of financial relief  in the form of food, non-food, gas, utilities etc. until the families get back on their feet.  Donations to food pantries typically decrease in the post-holiday months and that is the case at St. Benedict now.  Please look for the red information flier in your student's backpack and donate whatever you can to this community effort.
Lego Club
There will be no Lego Club on Monday January 28th due to a conflict.  We will resume regular session on Monday February 4th right after school in the conference room.  We will begin working on our next stop motion video.  Please be prepared with your theme and teammates.  Any questions please James Rubio
