Principal's Note
Congratulations to Julia M., Anthony C., and Brooke C. as our newest Christian Service Award recipients for the Diocese of Phoenix.  Each year, 8th graders from across the Diocese document their commitment of service to their parish, school and community and apply for this $8,000 tuition scholarship toward any of the Catholic High Schools. They collect letters of recommendation from their pastor and a teacher, write an essay and participate in a face-to-face interview with a member of the Service To Learn Committee.  Previous awardees from St. John Bosco include Adriana Amato, graduate of University of Missouri, Kevin Burton (a Junior at ASU), Camille Adams (a Freshman at University of Arizona) David Gesicki (a senior at Seton Catholic Prep), Erika Zanotti at Xavier, Garret Rupp at Brophy, Taylor Long, a Sophomore at Xavier, Konrad Eze and Kacee R. attending Seton Catholic.

Awardees typically have a long detailed history of the service they have been involved in; it is never too early to discern if this is the type of endeavor that is right for your child. All the applicants have said the process is a wonderful opportunity in itself.  Applications are due in October of the students' 8th grade year, and service reaches back into 6th grade.  More information can be found on their website at www.ccfphx.org.
Congratulations to our 3 newest recipients!

Learning Lab Moving to Library
The school Learning Lab is moving to the Library effective Monday, January 14th. This will allow use of the Technology Lab for school work as well as accommodate the high number of students attending.  The Lab runs Monday through Thursday from 3:05 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on school days with 3:05 p.m. release.  Students in grades 4-8 can use the Lab as a quiet study hall with a teacher on duty and peer tutors available.  MAP students, once released from their homerooms, check in to MAP and then may come to the Lab.  Parent pick up students can be released to the Lab with notification to the homeroom teacher and the student proceeds directly to the Library.
From the Nurse's Office
It's that time again.  Flu season is upon us.  While we have not yet seen any cases of the flu here at SJB, all reports indicate that this season promises to be one for the record books.  That being said, it's not too late to get your flu shot.
Here are some other tips to staying healthy this winter.  Please share these with your children so they can also help in keeping their classmates healthy.

1.  WASH YOUR HANDS...  frequently.  This goes a long way in helping to decrease the spread of germs.
2.  Use an alcohol based hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available.
3.  Sneeze or cough into the crook of the elbow instead of into your hands.
4.  Avoid frequently touching your face, especially your nose and mouth areas.
5.  Get lots of rest.
6.  Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
7.  Promptly dispose of all used tissues in the proper receptacles.  Do not put them down on desks or tables to be thrown out later.
8.  Keep a close eye on symptoms that your children may be experiencing.  If they have a persistent or productive cough or runny nose, it may be best to keep them home.  School policy on fever is a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. Remember, children must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school after an absence.

Also, thank you for kind thoughts and generous gifts at Christmas.  It is a pleasure to be able to care for your children here at school.  May you all be blessed with happiness and good health in the new year.

What is Trivia Night?
Trivia Night is where teams of 8 adults compete in a 10 question, 10 round trivia contest. The winning team gets bragging rights (and they do) and their names on the traveling trophy. Each team brings their own appetizers, decorations for their table, and adult beverages. We provide the water and the sub sandwiches.  Pre-registration is required and the openings are limited.
This year, Trivia Night is on Saturday, January 26th.  It's not too late to round up a team of 8 and join us!  Don't know much trivia?  No worries.  You can buy "mulligans" which buys you up to 4 correct answers (limit 4 per table).

SJB Spelling Bee
Well it was another exciting Spelling Bee here at Saint John Bosco. All the spellers were doing incredibly well until the pronouncer stepped up the  degree of difficulty of the words. One by one the bench was cleared with one challenging word after another. Danielle and Teagan were the last two spellers.  With "oohs and ahhs" from the audience as they spelled word after word. Teagan misspelled grandiloquence leaving Danielle the lone speller. She spelled contemporaneous and was declared the winner. She will go to the Diocesan Bee on January 29.  Teagan is the alternate. We wish her well and look forward to seeing her represent SJB for the State Bee and then on to the Scripps National Bee in Washington D.C.
We would like to thank our pronouncer, Mrs. Avila and the three judges, Mrs. DuVall, Ms. Galvan, and Mrs. Haik. We are grateful to Mr. Regalado for making it possible for the SJB community to watch the spelling bee live via the Internet. Behind the scenes, Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Porter helped with preparations and our set up crew, Mrs. Ahearne, Mrs. DeCaro, Mrs. Abril, Mrs. Sanchez, and Mr. Rodriguez.

Congratulations goes to all the contestants.  They are the top spellers of their class and an inspiration to future contestants.  We say goodbye to our eighth grade contestants, Jamie, Stephanie, Teagan, and Danielle.  They had each been in several school bees and always made the bee exciting.  Our newest contestants showed such enthusiasm and perseverance. We look forward to seeing you in next year's school bee.

More spelling bee buzz to come as we follow Danielle through the Diocesan bee.

A big bulldog bark for all the contestants:
4 Christopher V, Dominic F,  Aidan W, and Christianna G
5 Colby G, John M,  Spencer B, and Victoria J
6  Marianne B, Jessica H, Sophia W, and Jacob M
7   Sierra H, Noah C, Kayla C, Archie S and Elie C, who was absent the day of the school bee
8    Teagan S, Jamie S, Stephanie B, and Danielle P

Poker Tournament Results
The Annual Dad's Club Poker Tournament has come and gone and by all accounts it was a successful event.  Thanks to everyone who participated and especially those who helped out with setting-up, cleaning-up, dealing etc.  A special thanks goes to Christina Grossgold who handled all of the check-in and most of the chip management duties and did such a great job.

We had 37 players this year, up from 30 last year, and we raised $1980.00 of which half was paid back to the the winners at the final table and half was donated   In addition to the monetary contributions several hundred cans of food were collected and all proceeds were presented to the St. Benedict's Chapter of the Society of  St. Vincent de Paul.

The evening started well with many walk-in players providing the increase in numbers.  A small technical difficulty with the overhead projector delayed the start of play but an abundance of engineers and a bit of creativity kept the delay short.  Due to the increased number of players and wily strategies(keep re-buying until the deadline)  the tournament ran a bit longer this year.  In the end the weary duo of Greg Edmond and Rob Leary decided to call it a tie and chop the final two positions at 11:35pm.  The complete list for the final table and their winnings are:

Greg Edmonds and Rob Leary 1st and 2nd place  $250 each
Ray Howie 3rd place $100
Nick Shepard 4th place $90
Fred DeCaro 5th place $80
Doug Metzger 6th place $70
Mark Schmisser 7th place $60
Don Satiroff 8th place $50
Alex MacKenzie 9th place $40
