Greetings!
Yesterday marked the third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is a Latin word for "gladden or rejoice." The Church places special emphasis on joy and the anticipation of the Lord's coming. We light the rose candle on the Advent wreath. As the final week of preparations for Christmas begins, you might be looking for ways to keep Christ present for your children. This page at Catholic Culture has history, stories and activities to include at home for this final week of Advent.

I wanted to take a brief moment to share with you some thoughts in response to a question that often comes up regarding parish and school communication. About four years ago the Bishop incorporated all the parishes in the Diocese of Phoenix. His belief is that the ministry of education flows from the mission of the parish; thus, he incorporated SJB as a ministry of the Parish of St. Benedict.
Since then we have looked for ways to create stronger bonds within our now, one, community. As a ministry of the parish, we feel it is important to share with you all that is happening at the parish where your children are enrolled and therefore include you in the distribution list for our Weekly Update. As we are one community, we share the resource we use for email newsletter distribution. This enables us to save financial resources but also to better communicate with our full community, in the parish and the school. We will continue to communicate with everyone and we ask your support as we move forward as one community.

Although it is especially challenging to see Joy in the world after the tragedy of last week, we are fortunate that we can process the feelings of sadness with our children by relying on our faith. Our school, along with all the schools in the Diocese, participate in training with the Crisis Management Institute. Together we developed and now review our emergency response plans. We practice our lock down drills and fire drills monthly, and refine the process each time. Several members of our Phoenix Police department stopped by on Friday to check in with us. They pledged their support to make sure we would be prepared.
Each month we have an Informal Q & A as an opportunity for parents, teachers and Administration to talk about topics of interest. We will take some time at the next gathering on Monday, January 14th, beginning at 6 p.m to talk about school safety. The December Informal Q & A was held last week. The turnout was light (not too surprising for the month of December) but questions regarding the results of the MAP testing was one topic. Those results will go home in mid-January in time for the 2nd trimester optional conferences (January 29 and 30th- both half days). Schoolwide and in all classes we are seeing the expected growth, although some students are showing negative growth, so we are working to understand why and how we address it.
We had a call from a parent this morning about safety in the parking lot. Please do not use the North parking lot as a drop off. It is dangerous! Children can not be seen. It impedes the traffic flow as cars back-up and are not able to move in from 48th Street. Please do your part and park in order to walk your child in. If you need to drop off your child without parking, please drop use the carpool lane. Mrs. Conner |
Christmas Program Please join us for the Christmas Program on Thursday, December 20th. We ask that you drop off your children in the classroom at 6:00 p.m. The Ensemble Orchestra will begin playing at 6:10 and the classes will begin singing at 6:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

Christmas Program Reception The Moms' Club will be helping with the reception immediately following the Christmas Program. We are asking families to bring dessert treats to be shared. Single serving pieces like cookies, brownie bites, donut holes, and cupcakes all work best. Unfortunately pies and cakes can't be accepted because there is no way and no one to cut and portion them out. We ask that you bring in your single serving treats between 5-5:30 pm that evening directly to the MPR. This will allow everything to be set prior to the program so everyone can enjoy.

Advent Prayer Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen.
