Get More Tourists in Your Business!

The Solvang Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the newest local publication, the
Santa Ynez Valley Star in our China Ready Program.  Solvang welcomes approximately 1,500 - 2,000 Asian tourists weekly and the Santa Ynez Valley Star is creating an on-line page in Mandarin.  Increase your tourist business by placing an ad in this publication.

The Chinese version is going to be amazing addition for our Chinese visitors  It will be online only as a downloadable e-reader that visitors will be able to read about the history of our community as well as learn more about our culture, events and businesses we have.

Businesses need to place ads that will be specific to the Chinese version. They will be translated into Chinese so it will be easy to communicate with  visitors that don't speak English. They will feel like they are getting a special discount or coupon and the business will gain more traffic knowing their business is welcoming to these tourists.

If any business needs help with wanting to translate a menu or greeting to their customers we have that available as well.

Attached below are the rates for our Summer/Fall edition. They are deeply discounted already but we can offer 15% off an ad 1/4 page or higher.

This publication will be unique to the Solvang area for now as the Asian tourists primarily visit Solvang. This version has been translated into simple Chinese so that the majority of the Chinese visitors will be able to understand it. We are partnering with the Solvang CVB and Chamber so the visitor's will know our publication exists just for their visit. It will be viewed online only as most of them have tablets or cell phones that they use.  Print is not used very much in China.  This will work to your advantage as you can see how many people are downloading it and bringing it in to your business.  It will also help you communicate with these visitor's that don't speak English as they can understand your business and what you offer.

There  will be stories are about the history of Solvang, current events, business profiles and places of interest. This is intended to help them navigate the streets of Solvang and understand what the town is about.
According to Tracy Farhad of the Solvang CVB, there are roughly 1.5 million people visiting Solvang each year (numbers from a 2012 survey). Tracy Beard from the Solvang Chamber has said there are approximately 1,500 that visit weekly and those numbers are growing.  The State Tourism office is reporting in the last several years, each year the number from China increases roughly 30 percent.  In the next year several of the tour buses from China will be spending the night instead of just staying for an hour. That should increase TOT revenue and sales tax for the city.

This culture is about the feeling that they are getting a deal or a discount, so if you decide to advertise we strongly suggest you put in a "special" discount or deal to ensure your customer is satisfied. Your ad will be translated into Chinese so they know what you are offering. This will help them identify with your business. Please send us a picture of your products or store front so we can include with your ad.

All businesses that advertise will be listed on the map we include as well.

FREE TRANSIT TRANSFER PROGRAM

New program offers seamless transfers between 23 daily Pacific Surfliner trains and 12 connecting bus and shuttle services in six southern California counties

Passengers on the Pacific Surfliner rail service operating between San Luis Obispo and San Diego can now make free transfers to twelve connecting local public transit providers thanks to a new program introduced by the Joint Powers Agency that oversees the service.  The free service is in effect now throughout the South Coast and in Guadalupe.

The Pacific Surfliner transit transfer program provides free transfers between 23 daily Pacific Surfliner trains and twelve connecting local transit providers along a 351-mile route in the counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) board member Supervisor Salud Carbajal represents SBCAG on the Rail Corridor Agency board of directors.  "Most people don't know this but the Pacific Surfliner is the nation's second busiest rail service, and free transfers to and from local transit services like MTD and Guadalupe Transit will make a great service even better" said Carbajal, who regularly rides the Surfliner to board meetings in Los Angeles.  "It's now that much easier for tourists and regular train riders to get where they want to go."

Passengers can board participating transit services for free simply by showing a valid Pacific Surfliner paper or e-ticket. The program is being introduced on a one-year pilot basis and is funded by a cap-and trade grant received from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA).

Public transit providers participating in the free transfer program include:  San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority, City of San Luis Obispo Transit, South County Transit (San Luis Obispo County), Guadalupe Transit, Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District, Ventura County Transportation Commission, Gold Coast Transit (Ventura County), Glendale Beeline, Anaheim Resort Transportation, Orange County Transportation Authority, iShuttle (Irvine) and North County Transit District.

In addition, discounted one-day transit passes valid on Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority services and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will be sold onboard the Pacific Surfliner in the café car.

The Pacific Surfliner carries 2.8 million passengers annually in a 351 mile corridor, with ten one-way trips serving Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, and Goleta.  The authority that administers the Pacific Surfliner assumed responsibility for managing the service in July 2015 from the state of California and is composed of rail owners, operators and planning agencies in the six-county service area.

For more information, visit the service's new website at PacificSurfliner.com.

Water Wise Words

Storm Water
Tip of the Month
Clean grease traps at least once a week. Some traps require more frequent cleaning; therefore, adjust as necessary.   Do not pour grease into trash bins, street gutters, storm drains or sewers. Grease can clog sewer and storm drain lines causing blockage and spills. It is illegal to put anything but rain down the storm drain.
Collect bulk grease in containers/barrels for proper disposal. Make sure to keep grease containers/barrels in a secure area with lids closed, and make sure to keep areas tidy (free of spills).   This prevents rain water from washing food waste into the storm drain and keeps birds and pests from scattering trash.
Water Conservation

Tip of the Month
Refresh your understanding of your City's Drought Conditions which may include but not limited to:  (1) irrigating during the designated hours,(2) not creating excess runoff, (3) broom sweep around buildings and hardscapes such as sidewalks and driveways (no washing), (4) use cash washes (no vehicle washing), (5)  immediately fixing  known leaks, and (6) serve water to customers upon request.
