Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital Offers Adult "HeartSaver" CPR Course

 Monday, April 6, 2015

The public is invited to attend the Adult "HeartSaver" CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) class at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital (SYVCH) on Monday, April 6, 2015, from 6:00-9:00 p.m.  The class will be held in the administrative office in the back of the hospital located at 2050 Viborg Road in Solvang.

Based on American Heart Association guidelines for the lay public, the Adult "HeartSaver" class covers CPR as well as FBAO (Foreign Body Airway Obstruction) and also includes instruction of the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on anyone over the age of eight years. This class is appropriate for non-professional caregivers and any lay person who wants to learn these skills. Participants will receive a course completion card upon successfully finishing the class.

The class will be lead by Tina Collins, RN, MSN, ICCE, with the Cottage Health System Education Department. Collins has worked in patient education with Cottage Health System for more than 30 years and has extensive knowledge of these critical life skills.  "Come and learn how to be a heart saver. What you learn in three hours could rescue someone's life," Collins said.

The class fee is $25.00 per person and pre-registration is required by April 3, 2015.  Class participants must be over 10 years of age. Please register in advance by calling (805) 569-8229 or online by clicking here.

Santa Barbara Walk to Cure Arthritis

Saturday, April 25, 2015 You are Invited to Help Fight the

#1 Cause of Disability in the U.S.

The public is invited to help find a cure for arthritis by participating
in and raising funds for the
2015 Santa Barbara Walk to Cure Arthritis
Saturday, April 25
Registration opens at 8:00 a.m
The Walk begins at 9:30 a.m on the beautiful
Santa Barbara City College West Campus at 967 Cliff Drive

There is a one mile or three mile option - both leisurely walks through the campus and along the beach on West Cabrillo Boulevard.  The event provides a family-friendly environment with exercise, food, entertainment, kids' activities, and a health expo.   Pre-registration for the Walk to Cure Arthritis is strongly encouraged.   There is no minimum registration fee, but team fundraising for a cure is urged. For complete details, call Debbie Martin at 805-563-4685 or visit www.sbwalktocurearthritis.org.
The Santa Barbara Walk to Cure Arthritis will feature local honorees on the front lines in the battle against arthritis. The event's Honorary Chair is John Muller, Owner of Muller & Weber Physical Therapy.  The Medical Honoree is Dr. Miriam Parsa of Cottage Hospital.   Dr. Parsa is the sole practicing pediatric rheumatologist on the Central Coast.   The event also spotlights a Youth Honoree. Jessi Camarillo of Oxnard, 6 years old, was diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 4.
"Arthritis is costly, painful and debilitating, and makes a significant impact in the lives of people in this community," says Honorary Chair John Muller.  "By participating in and raising funds for Walk to Cure Arthritis, you will help us reach our local goal of raising $200,000, which will move us that much closer to better treatment options and a cure."
Arthritis is a crippling disease that impacts nearly 53 million adults and 300,000 children -approximately 23 percent of the United States population. The disease costs the U.S. economy $128 billion dollars a year, and is a more frequent cause of activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes.
Walk to Cure Arthritis is the Arthritis Foundation's signature, nationwide fundraising event to prevent, control and cure the nation's leading cause of disability.  Funds raised through the Walk to Cure Arthritis will go toward programs of research, education, advocacy and juvenile arthritis family support to help people today while finding a cure for tomorrow.

To register for the Santa Barbara Walk to Cure Arthritis visit
www.sbwalktocurearthritis.org or contact Debbie Martin at 805-563-4685
Additionally, the public is invited to join the effort in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, May 16, 2015 at the Cal Poly campus or visit www.slowalktocurearthritis.org

PCPA presents
My Fair Lady

PCPA is proud to present a sparkling new production of Lerner and Loewe's "My Fair Lady" this spring and summer season. It will play in the Marian Theatre April 23 through May 10, then in the Solvang Festival Theater June 11 through July 12. "My Fair Lady" is directed and choreographed by Michael Jenkinson, Musical Director is Callum Morris.

As with Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion" from which it was adapted, "My Fair Lady" explores society's prejudices toward class and gender while wrapped in a spectacular Lerner and Loewe score with such memorable tunes as "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" "With a Little bit of Luck," "I Could Have Dance All Night," "The Rain in Spain," and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face."

World famous phonetics expert and British upper class bachelor, Henry Higgins is willing to wager that he can pass off a Cockney flower girl in high society as a duchess just by teaching her to speak proper English. It was an unconventional plot for a 1950s musical. The love interest doesn't even spark until near the end of the play.

"The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated." -Eliza Doolittle.

Our Human Development Index
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce

Human Development Index (HDI) refers to combined measurement of (1) life expectancy at birth, (2) educational achievement, and (3) individual personal income. Quality of Living Index ordinarily would include measurements of other items such as public safety and clean air. HDI measures three aspects of quality.

Santa Barbara County has an HDI of 5.16 on a scale of 10. Here is how we compare with some other places.

Our HDI is above those of Kern County and the United States, while it is below those of San Luis Obispo County, California, and Ventura County.

Our HDI is among those of 39 percent of Californians who are in Main Street California, with scores of 5.00 to 6.99. Notice that the other county scores above are in that range, except for one. Kern County is a part of the 42 percent of Californians who are in Struggling California, with scores from 3.00 to 4.99. Main Street California and Struggling California include 81 percent of Californians.

One Percent California includes the highest scoring one percent, Elite Enclave California includes the next 15 percent, and Disenfranchised California the lowest scoring 3 percent. These three groups make up 19 percent of Californians.

Marin County, just north of San Francisco, has the highest HDI of 48 counties in California at 7.45, placing it in Elite Enclave California, where scores are between 7.00 and 8.99. Lake County in northern California has an HDI of 3.39, which identifies it as a part of Struggling California. No county is in One Percent California, and none is in Disenfranchised California, although some clusters of neighborhoods are in the top category or the bottom one.

The HDI of the United States hovers just above the boundary between Main Street and Struggling. California as a whole is Main Street.

Please see online A Portrait of California 2014-2015: California Human Development Report for details.
