Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Business Associates:

Solvang has been given the honor of being chosen as a Host Town for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Host Town Program. I am enlisting your help and financial support for this great event which will include a Special Olympic Delegation from a "to be announced" country. Our commitment is dedicated to 109 athletes and coaches from July 21 to July 24, 2015.

The Special Olympics World Games is the world's largest sports and humanitarian event, and will be held in Los Angeles beginning July 25,2015, for nine days.  Involved are 7000 athletes from 177 countries and 3000 coaches and competitors vying for medals in 25 different sporting events. ESPN will cover this 9-day event.

Athletes and coaches will be transported to and from Los Angeles to their Host Towns who are responsible for housing, food and local transportation as well as two community cultural events. Athletes and Coaches will be housed at Dunn and Midland Schools.  Our goal of raising $35,000 will ensure that we can provide all that is required from us by the World Special Olympics Committee. This will be a GREAT feel good event for our community, as well as having a direct impact on our local businesses during mid week travel.  Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley will position us as a community that cares and who will commit to reach beyond borders to help others. That is something we can all be very proud of.

This is an event that the whole community should and will support, and I want to make sure that YOU or your organization has the opportunity to sponsor this worthwhile event. Your support is vital to the success of our Host City commitment.

Thank you for your continued support of our Valley and Non Profits events.  We couldn't manage without your involvement!! Please send your tax-deductible donation payable to:

Economic Development
Tip of the Month
From the desk of:
Economic Development Director
Arleen Pelster

In early 2015, look for the Village directional signs to be in place!  The signs will be powder-coated metal with custom decorative tops.  Laser-cut vinyl lettering and directional arrows  will be used to guide visitors to shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, and community attractions.  The finished signs will be placed in large round planters; there will be a total of seven (7) signs throughout the Village area.  The goal of this signage program is to help visitors experience all of the Village area during their stay, and to bring more customers to our local businesses.  Once the signs are up, please give me your feedback if you see an increase in customer traffic to your business.

Best Wishes for a Safe and Prosperous 2015!

The Wealth of Neighbors
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce

You can estimate the relative household wealth of neighbors by looking at total dollars of revenue in their elementary school district per average daily attendance.

The information potentially is useful to marketers and to fund raisers, and perhaps to social scientists.

Here are data on the five elementary school districts in the Santa Ynez Valley.

The five school districts represent at least three levels of funding. College and Ballard districts are at one level, Buellton and Los Olivos are at a second level, and Solvang at a third. College district and Ballard district are enough different in dollars to be at separate levels, if you choose.

College district represents about 2.5 times the potential wealth of Solvang district. Ballard district represents about 2.1 times that potential, while Buellton and Los Olivos districts average about 1.34 times Solvang district.

Keep in mind that these ratios describe the districts relative to each other. Median  household incomes here tend to be near the national median or above it. Another worthwhile note is that total revenue per average daily attendance does not necessarily predict educational outcomes for any individual.

Go online to Santa Barbara County Education Office to see a map of the elementary school districts. On that Website go to Schools and Districts, then to About Our Schools, then to Ed Data, and then to District Reports (more) for Santa Barbara County, to see unaudited financial data by district from the 2012-2013 school year, as of September 10, 2014, or later.
