Solvang to Be Host City In July 2015!

The City of Solvang announced today that the community has been officially selected to participate in the Special Olympics World Games Host Town program from July 21-24, 2015.

Before the Special Olympics World Games begin on July 25, 2015, more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries will be welcomed to Southern California through the Host Town program. One hundred communities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego will have the honor of being selected as an official Host Town.

"The Host Town program is an exciting way for Southern California locals to open our doors and show the athletes and coaches from around the world our hospitality and our culture," said Patrick McClenahan, president and chief executive officer of LA2015, the Games Organizing Committee. "This is an important part of the World Games experience and a truly meaningful way for different communities to be part of the Games and create lasting memories for our visiting athletes."

As a Host Town, Solvang will offer its renowned Danish-American hospitality. Solvang Mayor, Jim Richardson, remarked, "We are thrilled to welcome Special Olympics visiting athletes, coaches and families to our community founded by Danish-Americans in 1911, yet only two hours up the coast from Los Angeles. Velkommen!"

The Host Town program has been an important element of Special Olympics World Games since 1995, and the experience has left a lasting impression on the local communities in Ireland, Japan, China, Greece, South Korea and the United States, all of which have previously organized Host Town programs as part of the Special Olympics World Games.

There will be two civic events planned for the 170 athletes and coaches who will be visiting Solvang in July.  Organizers welcome volunteers to be part of this very special event.  If you would like to be a volunteer please contact Carol Paaske.

If you would like to make a donation to the Special Olympics Host town program please visit: www.la2015.org/host-town.

Economic Development    Tip of the Month
From the desk of:
Economic Development Director
Arleen Pelster

The City is updating its General Plan Housing Element, and we have been spending a great deal of time on the U.S. Census website.  The U.S. Census Bureau has a wealth of information regarding demographc trends and data in the U.S.  It is a great source for business owners conducting marketing research and indentifying marketing opportunities.  You can visit the U.S. Census wesite at http://www.census.gov/#.  American Fact Finder is a great source for population, housing, economic and geographic information.  You can find this tool by clicking here.
Keep Storm Water Clean

TIP OF THE
MONTH
Don't apply fertilizer before or during a rain event.

Glass filled with drinking water from tap, isolated on the white background, clipping path included.

Water Conservation Tip

EVERY DROP COUNTS

How to keep your lawn alive during the drought:

(1)   Water at night. Watering at night will allow the soil to absorb water.

(2)   Prevent run-off.  Monitor your irrigation so that water is not wasted on sidewalks and streets.

(3)   If you water with a hose, always use a nozzle with automatic shut-off!

Remember - use it wisely!

 Sansum Clinic

2014 marks the 93rd Anniversary of Sansum Clinic, the oldest and largest non-profit, outpatient healthcare provider on the Central Coast.

Our longevity is due to our ongoing investment in the latest equipment and technology and our recruitment of the best and the brightest physicians, which combined, enable us to deliver the high-tech and high-touch elements of quality healthcare.
One of Sansum Clinic's founders, Dr. William David Sansum, was a pioneering researcher who launched the Clinic with the intent to study and eventually conquer diabetes. Dr. Sansum was the first American to successfully isolate, produce and administer insulin to treat diabetes.
Sansum Clinic has maintained that innovative approach and has continually evolved the level of care available in the community, working to stay out in front of the community's needs - advancing care in addition to responding to the challenges of the day. The organization's myriad healthcare advancements include the first renal dialysis machine and the first kidney transplant surgery in Santa Barbara. Sansum Clinic physicians performed the first carotid and laparoscopic surgeries and brought the first digital mammography services to Santa Barbara. The Clinic expanded care to residents with one of the first outpatient Urgent Care facilities, providing after-hours services that were open to the community.
Sansum Clinic is in the midst of one of the most ambitious projects in the organization's history. The Clinic is transitioning from paper charts to an electronic health record system that will provide complete electronic documentation of the care patients receive. The system is called the Wave, and it will create a single and continuously updated electronic chart for each patient, which means records will be complete and accessible by healthcare providers from anywhere at any time. The Wave is designed by Epic, the premier provider in the nation, which was chosen because it has the highest rate of patient, user and institutional approval of all electronic health records available.
This new technology reflects the dedication that Sansum Clinic has to delivering the best care and the best service to our patients and our community. Sansum Clinic has gone through several transformations in our history and the transition to an electronic health record puts us in a class with the best clinics in the nation.
In addition to being a leading provider of healthcare in Santa Barbara County,Sansum Clinic is a community service organization that contributes to the well-being of the community in many different ways.  Through programs such as free health education classes, flu shot clinics, and a collaboration with the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics for free diagnostic services for those in need, Sansum Clinic improves the quality of life of this community by delivering the educational and humanitarian components of a comprehensive healthcare program.

Sansum Clinic is the largest independent nonprofit healthcare organization between the Los Angeles Basin and the San Francisco Bay Area.  With more than 150 affiliated physicians, Sansum Clinic provides the full spectrum of healthcare services, from primary care to more than 30 specialties.   Sansum Clinic serves more than 150,000 patients (600,000 visits) annually at our 20 patient care facilities between Carpinteria and Santa Maria.

Who will Care for You?

Caregivers often must take care of their own family. It's inevitable that mom and dad will get older, and we often feel an obligation to take care of them because of all their love and support over the years. But how far will we go to take care of our parents? Will or can we help them financially? What about having them move in with us? These issues were addressed in a recent national online study. This past June, MORE magazine surveyed 751 adults age 18 and over with at least one living parent or guardian.

The two most alarming stats:

~ 45 percent say their parents have made no plans when they can no longer live independently

~ 26 percent have no clue what plans their parents have for later life

Here are additional findings, according to an AARP article:

  • 78 percent of men and women with both parents living say they will make a financial sacrifice to help with elder care because it's the right thing to do, yet if there's only one living parent, just 69 percent agree
  • 75 percent of all ages say they will make financial sacrifices to help mom and dad
  • 81 percent agree to support their parents physically, emotionally and financially as they have done for us
  • Women are more willing to cut back on their day-to-day lifestyle, while men are more likely to tap their retirement savings or the value of their home
  • 21 percent, evenly split among men and women, are unwilling to give up those or other options, including big-ticket items (vacations, cars, electronics) or their child's education fund
  • Among ethnic groups, 71 percent of Asians agree that their kids should provide money if necessary (13 percent don't), African Americans are split on the issue, 43 percent of whites agree and 37 percent disagree and 45 percent of Hispanics agree, while 35 percent disagree

According to the study, males ages 18 to 29 are nearly twice as likely as their counterpart females to live with their mothers, and men ages 55 and older are six times more likely as females to live with mom. Women ages 40 to 54 are twice as likely as guys to have dad move in.

At the end of the day, you must find out what your loved ones have in mind for when they become dependent. If they haven't given it all that much thought, it's time to have a meaningful conversation. The key for all parties involved is expectations.

Excerpts of this article were taken from an article posted on AARP in September 2013, "What are we willing and not willing to do for mom and dad?" written by S. Abrahms. For additional information, you may contact Kym Guy, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara, 965-5555, kym.guy@vnhcsb.org.

    LOOKING BACK SIDEWAYS:

Film Stills by Merie Weismiller Wallace, SMPSP

In fall of 2004, the comedy-drama film Sideways debuted on screens around the country and directed a spotlight to the rural beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley. With this film, director Alexander Payne focused attention on the area's flourishing wine and food industry and all of the local flavor.

Ten years later, the "Sideways effect" continues as visitors follow in the footsteps of the movie's characters and seek out specific local destinations and experiences.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the award-winning film, Elverhøj Museum of History and Art presents "Looking Back Sideways," a photography exhibition opening October 4. The display features iconic images from the film and a look behind-the-scenes as captured by Merie Weismiller Wallace, member of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers.

The Opening Reception will be held on Saturday October 4 from 4 to 6 pm. The public is invited to join in the celebration of Wallace's work which will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the film's debut. There is no charge for admission.

The photographs on display include many Valley residents who found themselves in front of the camera alongside cast members Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh. Sideways director Alexander Payne, noted for frequently using actual people in roles of minor characters in his movies, enjoyed letting Valley residents help to authenticate the story and settings. Photographer Merie Wallace, working alongside Payne, observed: "The rural beauty of the Valley combined with the cast of local characters to become the unique canvas and context on which the absurd and hilarious tragedy of Sideways unfolded."

On Saturday November 1, Photographer Merie W. Wallace will talk about her experiences on location with cast and crew. The public is invited to the free presentation of "Shooting Sideways" at 4 p.m. in the Museum Gallery. Wallace is widely known for her still photographic work in feature film production, but also contributes to various publications and gallery exhibits. She received her Master's degree from USC Film School, and has since worked around the world with noted filmmakers including Clint Eastwood, James Cameron, Alexander Payne, Kathryn Bigelow, and Terrence Malick. Household Incomes Next Door

    From the desk of:
    Kenneth Harwood
    Economist
    Solvang Chamber of Commerce

Median household income in Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara County in 2012 was larger than that in San Luis Obispo County to our north, according to the U. S. Census Bureau.

Our median household income trailed that in Ventura County to our south.

Here are median household incomes in 2012 inflation-adjusted dollars.

The three counties were ahead of both California and the United States in median household income.

Ventura County had a more diversified economy than that in Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County, including the region's only deepwater port. The Port of Hueneme, produced more than $13 billion of operating revenue in 2012-2013.

Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County were less urbanized than Ventura County. Much economic activity in the two more rural counties depended upon government, tourism, and agriculture.

Further economic diversification in both Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County seemed to be linked to educational institutions like University of California, Santa Barbara, and California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Higher educational institutions, including community colleges, created new businesses from results of studies.

Google recently announced interest in quantum computing as developed by University of California, Santa Barbara. Quantum computing promises extremely fast computations.

Ventura County was a nearby source of tourist spending in Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County. Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village in east Ventura County were homes to clusters of higher income households.

Please see U. S. Census Bureau data series S1903 in American FactFinder for 2012 American Community Survey one-year estimates of median income in the past twelve months. Go online to Port of Hueneme for operating revenue in the financial statement of 2012-2013.
