SCEEP Finds Santa Barbara Businesses
Save Thousands of Dollars By Going Green

By Kelly Kapaun for SCEEP
Published on 07.15.2014 5:44 p.m.

A new study from the South County Energy Efficiency Partnership (SCEEP) finds that 76 businesses in Santa Barbara County have collectively saved an estimated
1.15 mWh - or $154,153 in annual electricity expenses - by participating in a free, voluntary countywide Green Business Program.

The Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County offers incentives and assistance to encourage businesses to implement voluntary actions to protect, preserve, and improve the environment, and helps create an energy action plan toward energy sustainability. The program certifies businesses and showcases them so consumers can make informed decisions about what businesses to support.

Businesses such as lynda.com, MedBridge, and Dining Services at the University of California, Santa Barbara have completed measures beyond what current laws require in areas of energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, pollution prevention, and environmentally preferable purchasing.

For example, lynda.com estimates savings of $35,000 a year from energy efficiency upgrades identified during their certification process, including updating its outdoor water irrigation system, starting a commuting solutions program to help employees find carpool partners, and monitoring energy consumption through adjusting settings on computers, printers, thermostats and water heaters. The company also installed weather sensors that turn off sprinklers during rainfall, which decreased water use by 30 percent.

"At each step, we've received free guidance from experts in water and energy conservation, which was extremely helpful," said Dana Jennings, facilities supervisor at lynda.com. "Participating in the program established the beginning of our sustainability plan, and we'll continue growing and building on our success."

"Our goal is to make the program a really positive experience for businesses by offering assistance so they can make the connection between doing what's right for our local environment and what's best for their business," said Frances Gilliland, program director of the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County. "The program includes unique businesses of all different sizes that are already making improvements in sustainability, so we provide the framework to take it to the next level."

The Green Business Program is supported in part by SCEEP - a partnership of Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Company, the cities of Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara, and the County of Santa Barbara. The SCEEP collaborative identifies opportunities for homeowners and businesses to take advantage of rebates, energy efficiency incentives, and other utility programs to save energy and money.

Economic Development
Tip of the Month!

Solvang City
From the desk of:
Economic Development Director Arleen Pelster

Several businesses were burglarized in Solvang over the 4th of July weekend. The Sheriff's Office offers the following tips to help reduce your risk of burglary.

As simple as it sounds, be sure all doors and windows are locked up when you close for the day. Burglaries are often not the result of a forced entry. In a recent case, burglars easily gained entry via an open second floor window. Develop a lock-up procedure or checklist. This is especially important for new employees and seasonal help.  If you have a security system, check it regularly to assure it is in good working order.
Consider upgrading your locks to key-only deadbolts.  Walk the exterior of your business looking for concealed areas, burned out lights, and overgrown shrubs.  Consider implementing some of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) recommendations.  CPTED is a multi-disciplinary approach to crime prevention; you can review the  CPTED principles at:
cptedsecurity.com/cpted_design_guidelines
The Sheriff's Office will send a representative to your business to review your security measures with you at your request.  Please contact the Sheriff's Office at 686-5000 for more information.

Keep Storm Water Clean
TIP OF THE
MONTH
Never drain pools, spas or fountains to the street. Discharge to lawn areas or your sanitary sewer whenever possible.

Water Conservation Tip

EVERY DROP COUNTS

Living in sunny California means learning to deal with periods of unusually warm temperatures and extended dry periods.  Here is a tip to help you maintain your quality lifestyle and landscapes and be water wise:
Dispose of pool water properly.  Don't put swimming pool backwash into the street or alley. Apply as much water as possible to adjacent lawn areas.

Where The Jobs Are

From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce

Solvang created the largest cluster of jobs in the Santa Ynez Valley during 2012. Payroll employees in five places numbered 9,023, of which 3,191, or 35 percent, were in Solvang. Here are the five communities by ZIP Code.
Solvang, Santa Ynez, and Buellton differed from Los Olivos and Los Alamos in number of payroll employees. Los Olivos and Los Alamos together had less than half the number in Buellton alone.

Chumash Casino Resort had about 1,600 payroll employees in the ZIP code of Santa Ynez, or approximately 63 percent of 2,536 payroll employees in Santa Ynez.

Solvang led in total yearly payroll of about $108 million, representing 33 percent of the total payroll of more than $322 million in the five ZIP codes.

Santa Ynez reported the highest yearly payroll per employee, and Los Alamos the lowest, while Buellton had the median of $36,115.

Leisure and hospitality industries were prominent in these communities. Leisure industries included performing arts, sports, museums, historical places, amusement, gambling, and recreation. Hospitality industries included accommodations, food services, and drinking places. Retail establishments also were prominent.
Please go online to U. S. Census Bureau, 2012 ZIP Code Patterns (NAICS), to see source data. See online Bureau of Labor Statistics, Industries at a Glance, for descriptions of industries.
