Solvang Chamber of Commerce to Host Annual "State of the City" Luncheon February 19, 2014

On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, the Solvang Chamber of Commerce will host its annual "State of the City" Luncheon, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Hotel Corque (400 Alisal Road, Solvang).
The open-to-the-public ticketed event, sponsored by Union Bank and Lana Clark, Attorney at Law, runs $30.00 per person, which includes a three-course lunch. Reservations for the luncheon are required, and should be directed to the Solvang Chamber at 805.688.0701 or RSVP online by clicking here.

"This annual event is a fabulous opportunity for Solvang residents and business owners to catch up on how the City fared last year, and hear about all of the dynamic plans we anticipate getting underway, in the year ahead," says Brad Vidro, Solvang City Manager.

The February 19 lunch meeting is one of only a few times each year, where all Solvang businesses and residents have a chance to learn more about the City's operations, and gain insight into current and past City initiatives. During the February 19 luncheon, Vidro will lead a presentation encompassing Solvang's year-end financial wrap-up, the past year's City-driven projects, and future endeavors. Vidro will also use the luncheon as a platform to introduce guests to the City Council Members, and to explain the scope and responsibilities of the City's various departments.

The February 19 event's menu entails a baby spinach salad - complete with shaved red onion, tomato, goat cheese, dried cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette - followed by a choice of entrée: Grilled chicken served with vegetable couscous and pepper cream sauce, or a vegetarian option of quinoa with celery root, broccolini and coconut milk. A chocolate dessert rounds out the menu, served with profiterole, an open-faced chocolate puff with Chantilly cream. Coffee and iced tea are also included in the luncheon.

Orientation Meeting to be held February 5 for "Discover Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria" Guided Travel Tour
Presented by The Solvang Chamber of Commerce

On Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 6:30 PM,The Solvang Chamber of Commerce will host an orientation for the upcoming Chamber-presented, guided travel tour, "Discover Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria". The February 5 presentation will take place at BethaniaLutheran Church Parish Hall (603 Atterdag Road, Solvang).

The special international trip, "Discover Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria", is open to Chamber members and non-members, alike. The trip spans 10 days, September 3 through September 12, 2014, includes 12 meals (eight breakfasts, four dinners), and features four-night stays in two cities: The medieval city of Bern, and an extended stay in Innsbruck. The trip also includes round-trip air from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), air taxes and fees/surcharges, four-star hotels and hotel taxes, hotel transfers, round-trip ground transportation to/from Solvang/LAX, and daily tours.

The trip's special Chamber-discounted early booking rate for double occupancy is $3,649 per person, plus a $230 per person prepaid cancellation waiver and insurance fee. Only 20 spots remain for the European trip, and the trip's special early booking rate expires on March 3, 2014. Travelers must pay the $230 cancellation waiver/insurance fee plus a trip deposit of $250 per person, in order to hold their trip reservations; these space reservation fees can be paid at the February 5 orientation, or prior to that date.

"Discover Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria" begins in Switzerland's capital city of Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the Swiss countryside, where visitors will embark on a sightseeing tour featuring some of the city's most noted historical landmarks. The trip's second day will have guests traveling the shores of Lake Geneva to the legendary, medieval Château de Chillon, followed by a view-filled ride on the GoldenPass Panoramic Train, from Montreux to Gstaad, the idyllic Alpine ski resort boasting numerous traditional wood chalets. Moving on to Lucerne, travelers will explore the lake-side city's hidden treasures and more than 800 years of history.

En route to Innsbruck, the tour will travel through Liechtenstein, the smallest and wealthiest German-speaking country in the world, and the only country to lie entirely within the Alps. Upon arrival in Innsbruck, the "Capital of Tyrol," a local guide will lead a panoramic city tour highlighting some of Innsbruck's popular - and, once-royal - sights, all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the stately Austrian Alps.
While in Austria, guests will traverse Salzburg on a meandering walking tour featuring Mirabell Gardens (seen in "The Sound of Music"), the Getreidegasse (site of Mozart's birthplace), and many other Salzburg gems. The Salzburg day concludes with dinner at the 1,200-year old St. Peter's Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Austria, still owned by Monks.
The following day's adventures will take visitors to Bavaria's most famous castle, Neuschwanstein; World Heritage site, Wies Church; and on to Oberammergau, the picturesque village known for its internationally-alluring "Passion Play". Trip "two" finishes with a Tyrolean folklore show, followed by a farewell dinner in one of Innsbruck's most famous traditional restaurants.

The European trip was created by Linda Johansen, former President of the Solvang Chamber and an experienced travel professional, working in conjunction with Collette Vacations to fashion fun, memorable and educational experiences, and to foster the sense of camaraderie and community that the previous Chamber-presented trips afforded participating travelers.

To request a brochure for the European trip, for more information, or to reserve seats at the February 5 orientation, please contact Linda Johansen, Solvang Chamber of Commerce, at 805-686-1644 or lindyjo2003@yahoo.com. Information is also available, here: "Discover Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria".

WIN Global Women's Summit
February 7th and 8th in Solvang, California

Women who want to know how to monetize their talents, receive the tools to improve their businesses, create their own joy and confidence, network with other women for personal and professional growth, and who share a global vision for strengthening women and families are invited to attend the WIN Global Women's Summit February 7th and 8th in Solvang, California.

According to The WIN Founder and CEO, Dr. Paula Fellingham, "There is a rising and an awakening of the women of the world that is more far reaching and fast moving than anything ever before experienced in history. We are inviting women in 176 nations to let their voices be heard at Global Women's Summits. At this event attendees will learn from experts how to be highly successful in their personal lives, in their families, and especially in their businesses. Attendees will discuss important women's issues, enjoy excellent entertainment and receive (free) prizes".

At our local Global Women's Summit women will have the opportunity of hearing from well-known experts and powerful speakers and attendees will be entertained by Schickville Music Academy. Additionally, a representative from The WIN will be there to present the keynote address titled "Believe It! Become It!" In 2011 The WIN helped host the largest gathering of women in history for International Women's Day: 377 live events in 152 countries.

A New Year Resolution

The end of the year festivities are behind us. Now the time for feelings of hope and renewal that comes with a new year are upon us. It's also a great time for goal setting and/or putting the game plan to achieve those goals into motion. After all, what good is a resolution if no action is taken?

Yes. This is a call to action...financial action. It's the time of the year for portfolio reviews and changes. The financial markets provided some excellent returns in 2013. Now is the time to rebalance and look for new opportunities. A second opinion can often be beneficial to investors in doing just that!

HJ Investments is offering a complimentary portfolio review to fellow Chamber members.  This offer is good through February 28th.

Our Summer Customers

Businesses in Solvang are preparing for summer customers. More than in the past our summer customers seem likely to be arriving from other lands. Here is an example.

Solvang Shoe Store in August, 2012, welcomed 125 sales to customers who came from abroad. These sales were among 1,519 sales in all, or 8 percent of the total. The store recorded 155 of 1,176 sales to customers from abroad in August, 2013, or 12 percent of the 1,176 monthly total. While total sales were fewer in August of 2013 than the same month in 2012, the numbers of sales to customers from outside the U. S. in August, 2013, were greater in both number and percentage of total.

Total numbers of recorded sales to customers from Solvang and six nearby places were fewer in August, 2013, than August, 2012, in Solvang Shoe Store. Numbers of sales by ZIP code were these:

Number of sales from Solvang and these nearby places declined by 5 percent from August, 2012, to August, 2013, masking gains from Santa Ynez, Buellton, and Santa Barbara. Losses were from Solvang, Lompoc, and Los Olivos. All seven of these places were within Santa Barbara County.

Number of ZIP codes in the U. S. from which sales were recorded declined by 14 percent between August of 2012 and August of 2013.

Once again in 2013 most ZIP codes outside Santa Barbara County were in southern California. Visitors from southern California continued to appear as the primary market for number of sales. ZIP codes in California again outnumbered those in other states.

Thanks to Max Hanberg of Solvang Shoe Store for number of sales by ZIP code.
