Luncheon Event Honoring Certified Green Businesses
Businesses that have achieved certification during the past year as "green" businesses from the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County (GBPSBC) will be honored on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 during a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott, located at 555 McMurray Road in Buellton. Jacqueline Burge, Senior Director of Facilities for lynda.com, a certified "green" business, will serve as the keynote speaker. The cost of the luncheon is $25.00 per person, if payment is received by January 29th or $30.00 per person for payments received after that date.
The GBPSBC encourages employers and employees to protect, preserve, and improve the environment in solid waste reduction and recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy and water conservation, and pollution prevention e.g. air quality, transportation and storm water runoff. This multi-jurisdictional, voluntary incentive program allows environmental agencies and advocates to provide support and to recognizeparticipating businesses that implement good environmental management practices and are good environmental stewards. The GBPSBC educates businesses on incorporating resource conservation into their daily practices and fosters a positive relationship among governmental agencies, the business community, and the public.
A business that achieves certification can save money by reducing waste and the use of energy, water and other resources and create a more comfortable and healthy workplace. It will also receive a certificate and a window decal with the GBPSBC logo that it can use in marketing and on its website. In addition to the annual luncheon, certified green businesses will be recognized through a Green Business Directory on the GBPSBC website and through free advertising. GBPSBC Partners may also publicize certified green businesses in their promotional materials, events, advertising, on their websites, and in their own public recognition ceremonies.
To obtain more information about the GBPSBC Luncheon and to RSVP, please visit the GBPSBC website at www.GreenBizSBC.org. Our Billion Dollar Economy
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood Economist Solvang Chamber of Commerce
The Santa Ynez Valley produced goods and services in 2012 estimated at
almost $1.1 billion. Here is how our local economic output compared with the
economic output of the whole county. Santa Maria-Santa Barbara Metropolitan Area has the same geographical scope as Santa Barbara County. The estimated total output or gross domestic product (GDP) of Santa Barbara County was $20.9 billion in 2012.
Solvang-Santa Ynez Census County Division (CCD) includes Solvang, Santa Ynez, Buellton, Ballard, Los Olivos, Los Alamos and areas between them. U. S. Census Bureau defines this part of Santa Barbara County to include areas north and east of Los Alamos to the Sisquoc River. The estimated GDP of this part of the county was nearly $1.1 billion in 2012. Industries contributing most to GDP in Santa Barbara County tend to be real estate, government, manufacturing, professional services, and retail trade, in descending order of contribution. Santa Ynez Valley is the discontinued name of Solvang-Santa Ynez Census County Division, according to the Census Bureau. The area contained 22,044 people in the latest five-year estimate of the Bureau's yearly American Community Survey. The Bureau estimated county population to be 423,594. Solvang-Santa Ynez CCD represented 5.2 percent of county population and 5.2 percent of the county's per capita GDP. Per capita GDP assumes that each person in a geographical area produces the same contribution of output to total gross domestic product. This is a general estimate, because each child and each retiree is counted as producing as much as each person who is in peak years of economic output. Per capita GDP also assumes equal distribution of economic capital among individuals in an area. U. S. Department of Commerce offers per capita GDP of metropolitan areas as one of its measurements of the economy, and I estimate a smaller area's GDP from population of the area. Please see online U. S. Department of Commerce, Survey of Current Business, October, 2013, for GDP by metropolitan area and per capita GDP by metropolitan area. See online U. S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2008-2012, data series B01003, total population. Major components of GDP in Santa Barbara County are graphed on page 26 of The 2013 Santa Barbara County Economic Outlook, North Santa Barbara County, University of California, Santa Barbara, Economic Forecast Project. Call 805.893.5148 to order copies of the report.
