in Solvang all Weekend Long!
Enjoy Unique Gifts Galore, Deep Discounts, and Delights
Solvang, the California Central Coast's answer to "Christmas Town", is welcoming holiday shoppers multiple merchant-driven events and happenings during from both near and far, with the month of December. The town will, for the first time, host a three- day holiday shopping extravaganza,
"Shop, Mingle & Jingle"
Friday through Sunday, December 6 through 8, 2013, in addition to the monthly Solvang Third Wednesday event on, December 18, 2013, turning Solvang into a veritable holiday shopping wonderland.
Both of the December shopping and entertainment opportunities will encompass discounts and deals at Solvang merchants of all sorts, such as art shops and galleries; book-sellers; wine tasting rooms; wine and beer bars; clothing and accessories boutiques; home furniture, décor and hardware purveyors; restaurants, bakeries and specialty food stores; and pet supply shops. During Solvang's inaugural "Shop, Mingle & Jingle", December 6-8, 35 of the town's merchants will open their doors to celebratory shoppers, with extended hours. Most of the participating businesses will remain open until 7:00 PM all three days, with some open as late as 11:00 PM (The Good Life -Craft Beer & Wine Cellar, Friday and Saturday; Randy's Taproom, Friday and Saturday). "We've collaborated with 30-plus local businesses to ensure that both visitors and locals, see that Solvang's sidewalks do not roll up at five o'clock," says Susan Williams, who heads up the Solvang Third Wednesday efforts, the force behind "Shop, Mingle & Jingle". Most "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" participants are offering exclusive "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" deals - like Carivintâs Winery's Tasting Room, which will award shoppers who buy a case of wine with a case of Rosé, for just $20.00 - while some are also offering free gift wrapping with purchase. (Design Alternatives, Gaveaesken - The Gift Box, Parts Unknown, Rasmussen's, Valley Hardware, Wandering Dog Wine Bar, Z Folio Gallery).
As added shopping fuel, many of the "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" participants will offer guests free goodies, like mulled wine, sweets, and even a free olive oil tasting from a selection of more than nine varietals, at the Olive House. And as always, Solvang boasts ample free parking, the perfect accompaniment to a day and night of savvy savings. In an effort to entice visitors to "Sip. Sparkle. Shop Solvang." - well into the evening - a number of "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" participants will feature live music during the three day event. "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" music options abound, with a Spun Honey performance at Cali Love Wine; live blues/rock at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant; a Spanish guitarist at Lions Peak Vineyard's Tasting Room; Sweet Adelines singers at The Mole Hole; live harp music at ZFolio Gallery; and other live music performances spread throughout the weekend at The Good Life, Randy's Taproom, The Home Connection, and Sort This Out Cellars. The full "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" music line-up, is available at:: www.solvangthirdwednesday.com/shop-mingle-jingle. Other "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" activities include a Gingerbread House Workshop at The Solvang Bakery (Saturday, December 7, 10:30 AM-8:00 PM); a beaded earring class at Kandra's Beads (varying class times, December 6, 7 and 8); a sushi-making demo - including samples - at Kabuki (Saturday, December 7, 6:30 PM); and special "Sparkling Flight" and "Port Tasting" menus with cheese and chocolate pairings, at Wandering Dog Wine Bar, which will also offer 50% off of wine flights with a bottle purchase (open until 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday; 8:00 PM, Sunday). Wandering Dog Wine Bar will also host a "Wine Apothecary Wine Blending Seminar" on Saturday, December 7, 2:00 PM-4:00 PM, where guests will be able to craft their own custom wine blend. Local Sommelier and Wine Apothecary creator, Billy Dim, will be guiding seminar participants through the blending process, while helping them to find the perfect wine for their palate. Guests' custom blends, which make spot-on holiday gifts, will be available to order as 750ml bottles in quantities of three, six or twelve. The seminar runs $25.00 per person, and will include all materials needed for blending. The Wildling Art Museum will help " Shop, Mingle & Jingle" guests to keep their creative holiday juices flowing, with a Saturday, December 7 Open House and Craft/Art Fair, featuring face painting (12:00-3:00 PM), ornament making (12:00-5:00 PM), and live music (3:00-4:00 PM). Susan Williams continues, "During the "Shop, Mingle & Jingle" weekend, there will be music emanating from open doors all over our light-filled, pedestrian-friendly village; holiday scents wafting through the air; and Solvang will be full of life - even after dark. The Berry Man, Inc.
This local Santa Barbara company is owned and operated by Santa Barbara resident Guy De Mangeon. The Berry Man started on a shoestring in 1989, when Guy began selling sweet, succulent local strawberries out of the back of his truck. Going from restaurant backdoor to restaurant backdoor, starting with a few, the number grew as Guy's reputation spread. The inventory grew along with his reputation; more and more chefs asked Guy to carry more and more items. He is an experienced pilot that has been flying all types of aircraft since he was 16 years old. He has flown hot air balloons in Mallorca Spain, Hawaii and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He got his inspiration one night to fly hot air balloons when he noticed one fly over him in the city of Encinitas. In addition, he is one of 24 pilots in the nation that is allowed to fly passengers in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. "It's not the flying I love so much, its changing the way people think for a moment while they are up in the air. I also enjoy taking the handicap and the blind up. When they sometimes feel they cannot do it, we make it happen. We all need to step out of the box once and a while of day to day life!"

Solvang Looks at 2014
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood Economist Solvang Chamber of Commerce
Solvang's economy should continue to grow in 2014.
Rising rate of real expenditure by residents and visitors in Solvang should parallel that of the nation. Real expenditure is current or nominal expenditure less the current rate of inflation.
Here are expected changes in rates of real spending by consumers in the U. S.
The rate of gain in real spending is expected to be more than this year and slightly less than last year. Rate of change is actual for last year, and estimated for this year and next year.
Consumer spending is expected to continue to rise slowly next year, Spending by consumers accounts for about seventy percent of national economic activity. Other spending is by business and government.
Estimates of spending are from The Conference Board as of November, 2013. The Conference Board is a nonprofit membership and economic research organization. Some 1,200 members in more than sixty countries are private corporations, public corporations, and other organizations. Often the economic forecasts by The Conference Board are nearer to actuality than forecasts by the Federal Reserve Board of the U. S. government.
Number of single-family homes resold in California is to rise 3.2 percent next year, after falling 2.2 percent this year, as forecasted by California Association of Realtors. Median price is to rise 5.3 percent, having risen an estimated 28.0 percent this year.
Visitors' direct expenditures in California are to grow 5.9 percent next year, having grown 5.7 percent this year. Direct expenditures by domestic visitors are forecasted to rise 5.3 percent next year, while expenditures by international visitors rise 8.1 percent. International visitors help to improve our international balance of trade. On average international visitors stay longer and spend more than domestic visitors.
Economic activity in the wine industry of the U. S. should continue to improve in 2014, given present trends. Offered wine industry jobs posted online were seven percent more in October, 2013, than a year earlier. Direct to consumer shipments of wine were valued eight percent higher in October, 2013, than October, 2012.
Please see The Conference Board's U. S. economic forecast on the Board's Website. See on the Website of California Association of Realtors the housing market outlook. Dean Runyan Associates and CIC Research forecasted changes in California Tourism. See page 4 of latest California Travel and Tourism Outlook on the Website of Visit California. Wine industry statistics are in Wine Industry Data Center on the Website of Wines and Vines.
