Solvang Businesses making the 4th Annual Solvang Scarecrow Fest
bigger and better!
The 2013 Solvang Scarecrow Fest officially has 118 entries which reflects the harvest going on all through the Santa Ynez Valley. This year's Scarecrow Fest will, for the first time, be expanded to include four additional Santa Ynez Valley towns: Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos and Santa Ynez.
During the month-long event, which concludes on Monday, November 11, Solvang businesses will participate in the contest by featuring a scarecrow of their own creation, posted at their location. Locals, tourists and other area merchants will vote via ballot boxes scattered about the City, for scarecrow winners in eight different categories: "Most Danish", "Best 'Action' Scarecrow", "Best Use of Natural Materials", "Best Traditional Scarecrow", "Spookiest", "Best Use of Business Theme", "Most Humorous", and "Best Use of Recycled Materials". Ballots will be available at the Solvang Visitors Center and at participating businesses, and will feature maps to direct voters to each of the contest's scarecrows.
Use this opportunity to email your customer list and invite them to join the fun. Consider providing some treats to visitors who have come to town to check out our unique scarecrow entries or create a special offer to enhance their visit. Make sure your scarecrow is up no later than the 10th of October. The independent judges will start voting on the 11th. Scarecrows that are not up may not be judged.
Once a "public" winner has been chosen for

each category, the "Best Solvang Scarecrow" will be selected by a panel of 10 judges, who will be presented with one scarecrow winner from each of seven different areas of Solvang. The Best Scarecrow from Solvang will be entered into the Valley-wide competition with the winners from Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, to determine the "Valley's Best Scarecrow". The ultimate winner will be announced on November 20 at 2:30 PM, at the Wildling Art Museum (Mission Drive and Fifth Street), during the November edition of Solvang's monthly "Third Wednesday". The Valley winner will receive the contest's exclusive, handcrafted trophy, the "Harvest Cup", to keep on display in their town until the conclusion of the following year's contest.
Solvang's Scarecrow Fest was created to drive business to each of the participating businesses and organizations, as well as to the town and the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley locales, in general. The eight different voting categories mentioned above, were selected through a conscious effort to nurture friendly competition and community among the local businesses, to highlight the unique traits that Solvang possesses, and to encourage mindful, eco-conscious creativity. Last year's Scarecrow Fest received nationwide publicity, drawing markedly increased visitor activity to Solvang.

Solvang's "West End" Gears Up for Fall
with "Fall Frolic Block Party" during
Solvang Third Wednesday
Solvang Third Wednesday is on October 16th and will include a
"Fall Frolic Block Party"
at the town's "West End", which will serve as a Halloween "boot camp" of sorts for locals and visitors seeking seasonal food, fun, furry-friend frivolity, and savings. The Third Wednesday's West End block party will feature live music, free treats and cider, free face painting for both children and adults, a doggie costume contest sponsored by Lemos Feed & Pet Supply, another Third Wednesday "Cash Mob", and free admission to the Wildling Art Museum, which will stay open until 7:00 PM for all West End party-goers.
October's West End "Fall Frolic" fun starts with a "Cash Mob" gathering at 5:20 PM, when Third Wednesday bargain hunters are invited to meet in front of Santa Ynez Valley Real Estate (1595 Mission Drive, by the clock on the corner of Mission Drive and Atterdag Road), each bearing $10.00 to spend. The "Cash Mob" will travel together to October's "mystery" shopping location - one of the local merchants - who will offer an exclusive Third Wednesday discount on their wares, allowing "Mobbers" to put their $10.00 to good use.
As a reward to the "Mob" for showing their support of the "mystery" local business, all "Cash Mobbers" are invited to Wandering Dog Wine Bar post shopping, where all "Mob" guests will receive complimentary treats, 25% off select wines by the glass, and 15% off bottle purchases, logo clothing and gourmet food items.
Come on out for the Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market, regular Third Wednesday deals at local restaurants and gourmet food purveyors, the popular Wine & Beer Walk and discounts from local merchants and hotels.

Our Very High Income NeighborsFrom the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood Economist Solvang Chamber of Commerce
The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has one of the top 25 concentrations of very high income households in the United States. Our MSA is 16th among some 388 MSAs in the country. That puts us in the upper four percent of MSAs.
Here are rankings of a few of these MSAs, and the concentration of very high income households in each. Notice that our MSA has less than half the concentration of very high incomes in Bridgeport-Stamford Norwalk, just outside New York City. We have a smaller concentration of very high income households than Oxnard-Ventura-Thousand Oaks to our immediate south. Santa Rosa-Petaluma MSA, north of San Francisco, represents the lower limit of concentrations among the 25 top MSAs. Very high income is a relative term. Here it means incomes in the topmost five percent of all household incomes. The lower limit of the top 5 percent is $191,469 a year. Median household income in the U. S. is $50,502, so that very high income is more than three times the national median. Household income is the income of the householder and all others in the household who are at least 15 years old. Median household income is the midpoint of all household incomes when all household incomes are arranged in order of size. High income households spend more than other households on basics such as food. Households having income in the top 20 percent of all households spend nearly 55 percent more dollars on food than those in the bottom 20 percent. High income households spend more on restaurant food than do other households. High concentration of very high income households makes possible the availability of goods and services that are not found as readily elsewhere. Goods include luxurious houses, automobiles, clothing, jewelry, and household furnishings. Services include above normal numbers of offices of financial professionals such as bankers, brokers, and investment advisors. Another effect of high concentration of these households is to foster unusually large numbers of local non-profit institutions such as churches, clinics, schools, libraries, and museums. Please go online to Charles Adam Bee, The Geographic Concentration of High-Income Households, 2007-2011, U. S. Bureau of the Census, February, 2012, Table 2, for data by MSA. See online Amanda Noss, Household Income for States: 2010 and 2011, U. S. Bureau of the Census, September, 2012, page 1, for national median income. Go online to Noel Blisard and Hayden Steward, Food Spending in American Households, 2003-2004, U. S. Department of Agriculture, page iv, for spending on food by household income.
