Thomas Kinkade

Thomas Kinkade Studio The Thomas Kinkade Places in the Heart Gallery moved after 13 years to Copenhagen Drive.  Places in the Heart exclusively represent the artwork of Thomas Kinkade, the Painter of Light.  The gallery offers limited-edition canvas lithographs and a large selection of gifts and collectible items emblazoned with the artwork of Thomas Kinkade.

Thomas Kinkade was a painter-communicator whose tranquil, light-infused paintings

bring hope and joy to millions each year.  A devoted husband and father of four daughters, Kinkade grew up in the small town of Placerville, CA where his traditional values were instilled.  His devotion to spreading joy and peace through his artwork was Kinkade's life goal.

Nanette Kinkade has been looking through the vast array of paintings Thom completed but had not released to the public; we are getting a few new paintings from The Thomas Kinkade Vault and from Thomas Kinkade Studios, a small collective of artists who apprenticed under Thom over the years.

"Thom has such a special gift, whether the painting is a mountain landscape, city scene or a tranquil bridge, each image possesses that special Kinkade Glow" Lynne, the gallery director stated.  "It's so fun to see the collector's faces as I dim the lights on the canvases".

Danish Days Foundation

Danish Days Foundation In 1936, the first Solvang Danish Days festival emerged in honor of the village's 25th anniversary. Ever since, Danish Days celebrates Solvang's heritage with authentic food, music, dancing, parades, live entertainment and family activities. In 1946, a reporter from the Saturday Evening Post (an influential magazine of the day) visited during Danish Days and the article that appeared in January 1947 put Solvang on the national map. It stated, in part, "Solvang . . . a spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose in California's charming Santa Ynez Valley. Old country charm and customs have been successfully fused with the American way of life.
Nowadays . . . the quaint village is busy living up to its affectionate name, 'Little Denmark'."

In the ensuing years, Solvang Danish Days continued to grow and became a signature community event. In early 1995, the Solvang City Council approached people from long-established local Danish families and other interested groups and recommended setting up a non-profit foundation to formally plan and organized the increasingly popular annual festivities.
The original board members of the Solvang Danish Days Foundation were Ken Andersen, Brenda Anderson, Hans Birkholm, Max Hanberg, Howard Petersen, David Rasmussen and Henry Skytt. The Foundation members meet throughout the year to plan and organize the celebration. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.

KenHarwood Tourism Recovers
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce

Tourism is a leading industry in the economic base of Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley. Visitors buy four main groups of commodities: (1) transportation; (2) recreation, entertainment, and shopping; (3) traveler accommodations; and (4) food and beverage services.

Visitors spent differently after the great recession than before. The recession began in December, 2007, and it ended in June, 2009. Here are changes in national spending, in inflation-constant dollars of 2005.
Tourism Recovers

Visitors' total spending in 2012 was 5% smaller in constant dollars than it was in 2007, after cancelling the value of inflation. All four main commodities were included.

The first and largest of the four economic pillars of tourism accrued in main to the visitor's point of origin--the home area of the visitor. A visitor typically bought transportation tickets before a trip. Spending on transportation in 2012 recovered all but 3% of its earlier value.

The other three main sets of purchases tended to be concentrated at the visitor's destination. Recreation, entertainment, and shopping was the largest of these.  Visitors scrimped the most on this. The category was 18% below its earlier value.

Shopping meant nondurable personal consumption expenditures on commodities other than gasoline. Nondurables have a life of less than three years. Transportation expenditures included gasoline. Shopping in 2007 was 16% of total expenditures, and 13% in 2012.

Traveler accommodations gained the most. Visitors in 2012 on average paid 13% more for lodging than in 2007, inflation aside. Part of the gain might be attributed to capital investment in existing hotel properties while the cost of borrowing was historically low. Another part could have come from little building of additional rooms in a time of rising population.

Food and beverage services were another main category in which typical visitors spent less than they did earlier. The remaining gap to full recovery was 9% in 2012.

Please see online U. S. Department of Commerce, Survey of Current Business, June, 2013, page 36, for detailed real output by tourism commodity in 2007-2012. Total dollars vary from detailed dollars because of rounding.
