Have you signed up to become a "Hands Helping Hearts Business"?
For every minute that CPR is not performed in a cardiac arrest patient survivability decreases by ten percent. By increasing the number of adults trained in "Hands Only" CPR in our community, we can increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest victims.
The Solvang Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the City of Solvang and AMR to spread the word about this life saving program. Our goal is to train 80% of the businesses in Solvang.
Upon reaching this goal AMR will donate to the City of Solvang an AED and mounting equipment. Also, everyone who is trained will be included in a drawing that includes an IPad mini, IPOD or Bose Sound System.
What is Hands-Only CPR? It's CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It's recommended for use by people who see an adult suddenly collapse. It consists of two things:
1. Call 911 (or send someone to do that)
2. Begin high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest
It's easy and it takes minutes to learn! Best of all it's free!
AMR, your local ambulance company serving your community for over 40 yrs, will provide this training to you and your employees absolutely free!
Once trained your business will be recognized as a "Hands Helping Hearts Business" which means your business name will be printed on a flier promoting Hands-Only CPR. Free advertising for your business! Also included is a special window cling to display your business as a "Hands Helping Hearts Business".
Watch for AMR representatives to make an appointment to be trained at your convenience.
For more information please contact the Chamber office: 805-688-0701 or Les Hugie MICP, Clinical Manager, AMR 800-688-6550

Arleen and Lisa of the City Community Development Department will give a brief presentation on these topics. They will also discuss the City's code enforcement program, so you will know how violations are handled if you accidentally slip up.

Z Folio brings the art of Glass and Metals to Solvang
Meet Artist Paul Harrie: Sunday, June 9th from 11 am to 5 pm. Just like a geode reveals its inner beauty when opened - so does the glass work of Paul Harrie. Paul loves creating objects of art that give the impression of opening up to find mysterious beautiful interiors. His Saturn series is a perfect example; blown glass spheres with layers upon layers of brilliant colors and intriguing textures to pull the viewer in. Living in California and drawing inspiration from the Sierras, Paul created his River Series of glass in liquid looking organic shapes to emulate the colors and softness of water gently flowing over the rocks in a mountain stream. And for something abstract, random and fun, his Tectonic Series includes a mixture of all of his collections that are cut up, cast in into cement forms and then cut and polished into different shapes. Meet Artist Tom Kruskal on Sunday, June 23rd from 10am -5pm. Forging is one of the oldest known metalworking processes and Tom Kruskal has perfected this ancient art to create flowing, graceful designs in silver, gold and platinum. The eye-catching high polish found on Tom's jewelry is accomplished by the use of a specially made mirror-finish anvil that is struck by hand with a polished hammer. The result is a beautiful jewelry that is light in weight yet remarkably strong and resilient, and styled as no casting or stamping could ever be. As Harvard graduate, dancer, and musician Tom Kruskal's designs are rooted in his interest in mathematics and music which lend a sense of proportion, balance and movement to his work. Tom's jewelry styling ranges from high fashion to conservatively elegant. It is timeless and appeals to all ages.

American Medical Response
Almost 8,600 times each day, AMR caregivers respond to patients in need of emergency medical care and transportation. These professionals must be prepared to provide high-quality care in a variety of situations - from critical life threatening injury and illness to non-emergency transportation from the hospital to home. At AMR, we meet the needs of these patients every day. We set high standards of clinical excellence for our caregivers, managers and educators. For AMR, clinical excellence involves having the tools, knowledge, judgment, skills and passion to perform at the highest level. It requires providing caregivers with education and training that meets or exceeds current industry standards.
Clinical excellence at AMR also involves providing refresher courses and ongoing education to keep our caregivers trained on current trends in emergency medicine practices. It also requires a robust quality assurance program that requires that all patient encounters meet our rigorous clinical and customer service standards.
AMR's clinical excellence programs ensure that the patients and the communities we serve receive the highest-quality levels of pre-hospital services.

The Wildling Museum
Where Art & Nature Meet! After extensive planning efforts, focused on the long term sustainability of the museum and ways to increase their service to the community and visitors, the Wildling Museum board decided to move their operation from Los Olivos to a new facility in Solvang.
The new space at 1511-B Mission Drive in Solvang more than doubles the exhibition spaces, allowing them to present three to five exhibitions at any one time. There will also
be new program spaces, resulting in more art workshops, lectures, and events for
the whole family. These spaces will be available for groups to rent
and hold their own events.
One of the most exciting new features of the Solvang location is
the addition of a wilderness resource center. The museum is partnering with various organizations around Santa Barbara County to offer information, maps and brochures to anyone interested in exploring the natural areas to be enjoyed throughout Santa Barbara County. We hope to become a one-stop-shop for visitors and residents to come to in the Santa Ynez Valley to learn more about enjoying the natural beauty that Santa Barbara County offers. Solvang Grows Again
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce
Solvang appears to have a growing population once again. Here are estimates across 23 years. The three earlier estimates were by the U. S. Census Bureau as of April 1 each census year. The latest estimate was by California Department of Finance Demographic Research Unit as of January 1, 2013.
Solvang grew by about 12% from 1990 to 2000, averaging 1.2% a year. The city depopulated by about 2% from 2000 to 2010, losing 0.2% of residents a year on average. The rate of repopulation from 2010 to 2013 was about 0.1%, averaging 0.03% a year in the three years.
Continuing the latest three year average rate from 2010 to 2020 would suggest perhaps 5,400 residents in 2020, or about 155 more than in 2000.
Cautionary notes are in order. The state's Demographic Research Unit in 2009 estimated Solvang's population to be 5,446, and rising, as of January 1st, 2009. The Census Bureau counted 5,245 residents as of April 1, 2010. Demographic Research Unit revised to 5,241 its slightly high estimate of 5,446.
A general caution is that some 5,400 residents in 2020 would result if exact conditions of 2010 to 2013 were to persist until 2020. That seems unlikely, although we are unable to say how conditions would change from now until then.
Yet entrepreneurs somehow make business plans with existing data. The outlook now suggests population gain from 2010 to 2020, instead of the population loss from 2000 to 2010. Growth rate from 2010 until 2020 seems to be more modest than the rise of 12% from 1990 to 2,000.
Census counts are online from California Department of Finance Demographic Research Unit in 1850-2010 Historical U.S. Census Populations of Counties and Incorporated Cities/Towns in California. Latest yearly estimates are online from California Department of Finance Demographic Research Unit in Report E-1 City/County/State Population Estimates with Annual Percentage Change, May 1, 2013. Revised estimates of 2009 are online from California Department of Finance Demographic Research Unit Report E-4 Table 2 Population Estimates for Cities, Counties, and the State, 2000-2010, with 2000 and 2010 Census Counts (revised 9-14-2011, 10-12-2012, and 11-9-2012).
