American Medical ResponseCan your business save a life?

HandsOnlyTake the challenge with Hands-Only CPR,
It's free!

For every minute that CPR is not performed in a cardiac arrest patient survivability decreases by ten percent. By increasing the  number of adults trained in "Hands Only" CPR in our community,  we can increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest victims.

The Solvang Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the City of Solvang and AMR to spread the word about this life saving program. Our goal is to train 80% of the businesses in Solvang.

Upon reaching this goal AMR will donate to the City of Solvang an AED and mounting equipment. Also, everyone who is trained will be included in a drawing that includes an IPad mini, IPOD or Bose Sound System.

What is Hands-Only CPR? It's CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It's recommended for use by people who see an adult suddenly collapse. It consists of two things:

1. Call 911 (or send someone to do that)

2. Begin high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest

It's easy and it takes minutes to learn! Best of all it's free!

AMR, your local ambulance company serving your community for over 40 yrs, will provide this training to you and your employees absolutely free!

Once trained your business will be recognized as a "Hands Helping Hearts Business"  which means your business name will be printed on a flier promoting Hands-Only CPR. Free advertising for your business! Also included is a special window cling to display your business as a "Hands Helping Hearts Business".

Watch for AMR representatives to make an appointment to be trained at your convenience.

ElectricCars
The City of Solvang Lowers Rates at Electric Charging Stations

Effective April 5, 2013, the City of Solvang has lowered the hourly rates on their electric charging stations from $1.25 to $.45. The City was one of the first charging stations to go live and it was unclear what the going rates would be. After a review of local rates it was discovered that the City of Solvang was the highest in the area. Rates have been lowered to the same rate that is being charged in other areas of the county of Santa Barbara in hopes that the change will keep the City of Solvang competitive and bring drivers of electric vehicles to our lovely city.

Ascendant Spirits
Organized in Santa Barbara with friends and family by Stephen Gertman in late 2011, Ascendant Spirits uses the best American grains and the best local organic produce as key ingredients for its distinctive handcrafted vodka, gin and Whisky products. Ascendant Spirits Ascendant Spirits is the first distillery in Santa Barbara County to legally produce Whisky, vodka, gin, and other spirits since prohibition.
Our impeccable new distillery is outfitted with handmade equipment that benefits from the culmination of hundreds of years of classic distilling knowledge. This equipment includes a 500 gallon American made copper still custom built to our Master Distiller's specifications. Unlike the mega-distilleries who churn out liquor on a factory scale, all of the spirits at Ascendant are patiently hand crafted in small batches by the Master Distiller utilizing the best American grains and as many fresh local and organic products as possible.

Ken Harwood
KenHarwood Our Money from Investing

From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce

Residents of Santa Barbara County got more than a usual share of personal income from interest, dividends, and rent. Here is how we compared with our neighbors in 2011.

Our money from investing

These five places show two levels of income from interest, dividends, and rent. The higher level includes Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County. A more usual level of income from these three sources includes California, Ventura County, and the United States.

Interest comes from certificates of deposit, bonds, mortgages and other sources of fixed income. People who put money at risk through lending usually receive interest.

Dividends usually result from ownership of businesses through company stock; and through company stock owned by mutual funds, exchange traded funds, and other forms of equity. People who put money at risk through owning shares of businesses often receive dividends.

Rent usually comes from residents and business operators who pay to use real property without owning the property. People who put their ownership of real property at risk from occupants of the property ordinarily receive rent.

Total personal income also includes personal net earnings such as income from personal wages and salaries, and from personal transfer receipts such as Social Security payments and food stamps.

Residents of Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County received about half again as much as residents of California, Ventura County, or the United States as their share of personal income from  interest, dividends, and rent during 2011. A probable reason for the difference was that residents of Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County put greater personal wealth at risk as investments.

Personal net worth is a measure of financial wealth; it is the sum of what a person owns less the sum of what the person owes. Larger personal net worth often results in larger personal income from investments.

Think of what life would be like if 18 percent to 28 percent of one's total personal income were to be cut by half or to disappear. This little mind exercise suggests the importance of seeking to improve one's abilities to manage personal investment.

Please go online to U. S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis, BEARFACTS (BEA Regional Facts) for total personal income and its components.
