In Memoriam
Atto Alexander
Longtime Chamber member Atto Alexander, well known in the city of Solvang for his unique signs through his business A Sign by Atto died last month from cancer. After moving to Solvang with his wife Mary in 1961, he started the art program at Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, and taught there for 19 years. He started his sign business during this time and for more than four decades created signs for Solvang businesses. A walk through the Village yields many signs, an estimated 80 percent, bearing the trademark "Atto" signature. Atto was more than a sign maker. A talented artist and business advocate who loved our community; he helped business owners with color choices and designs and guided them with expert knowledge through the Solvang sign regulations. Often he would not accept payment for the extras he provided, especially for businesses just getting a start. Atto Alexanders' contributions to our community live on, but his presence will be greatly missed.

Certified Green Business Luncheon

Businesses that have achieved certification during the past year as "green" businesses from the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County will be honored on Wednesday February 13, 2013 during a luncheon at the Santa Barbara Marriott in Buellton. Eric Onnen, Founding Partner of Santa Barbara Airbus, will serve as the keynote speaker.
The GBPSBC encourages employers and employees to protect, preserve and improve the environment in solid waste reduction and recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy and water conservation and pollution prevention e.g. air quality, transportation and storm water runoff. This multi-jurisdictional, voluntary incentive program for environmentally conscientious businesses allows environmental agencies and advocates to provide support and to recognize participating businesses that implement good environmental management practices. It also focuses on publicizing businesses that are good environmental stewards.
The GBPSBC educates job providers on incorporating resource conservation into their daily practices, as well as fostering a positive relationship among governmental agencies, the business community and the public.
A business that achieves certification can save money by reducing the use of energy, water and other resources and create a more comfortable and healthy workplace. It will also receive a certificate and a window decal with the GBPSBC logo that it can use in marketing and on its website. In addition to the annual luncheon, certified green businesses will be recognized through a Green Business Directory, advertising, and on the GBPSBC website. GBPSBC Partners may publicize certified green businesses in their promotional materials, events, and advertising, on their websites and in their own public recognition ceremonies.

The Garagiste Festival comes to Solvang!
Celebrating the artisan vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, this is an opportunity to discover wines and winemakers that are likely new to you. With their annual production fewer than 1200 cases total, the majority of the participating wineries do not have tasting rooms and their wines are difficult to find.
Over 15 grape varieties will be represented along with various blends. The wines will be poured by the dedicated vintners who will share their story along with the wines.
Proceeds from the festival benefit the Wine and Viticulture program at Cal Poly

Solvang Greyhound Fest

Solvang is going to the dogs again!
If you would like your business to participate or if you don't allow the greyhounds in your business, here is the information that you need.
- Representatives for the Greyhound Fest will be in Solvang Friday, February 8 to distribute posters and Welcome (and No, Thank You) Greyhound signs.
- Merchant Poker Game. If you would like to participate, you give a random poker card to each Fest participant who makes a purchase in your establishment. Rules will be posted on the decks of cards provided.
- If you would like to make a donation to the raffle or silent auction, the proceeds will benefit Greyt Legs, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

CPR/First Aid Community Classes

Buellton Parks & Rec Center
Taught by Chamber Member Linda Shier of Central Coast Health & Safety, LLC., Linda will  teach you how to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. In addition, the first aid training teaches you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts and scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck and back injuries and heat and cold emergencies. Students successfully completing the certification course will be provided with an American Red Cross standard 2 year certificate. The cost is $110/person for the Standard First Aid, Adult, Infant & Child CPR/AED and $90/person for the Adult, Infant & Child CPR/AED without first aid.
Space is limited so it is required to pre-register and pre-pay for the class.

Party goers will enjoy live music and wine sampling along with sweet and savory treats at the "Valley Wines and Valentines" event at Elverhoj Museum of History & Art. The party will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday February 14. Admission is $10 for member, $20 for non-member and includes an event wine glass, gourmet food and entertainment.
"Our Le Cordon Bleu trained chef is preparing beautiful and tasty food," says Elverhoj executive director Esther Jacobsen Bates. "There will be appetizers, a Danish cheese board, a selection of locally made desserts and delectable chocolates; all these foods can be paired with a great selection of award-winning local wines."
Flowers, candlelight and music by harpist Ellen Beckerman create a welcoming ambiance. A small but select silent auction will feature a number of highly desirable items including special wine bottlings, one-of-a-kind art gifts and local adventures. The winners of The Fabulous Valentine Raffle will be drawn at the event. Grand Prize is "Cupid's Wine Cellar," a 24-bottle wine collection donated by hand selected local vintners. First Prize winner will receive 12 bottles of selected wines. Additional prizes will be awarded. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

We are where median household income during 2007-2011 was higher than in the Santa Barbara area, in California, and in the United States. Here are details.
 CCD stands for Census County Division, a part of a county named by the U. S. Census Bureau. The Bureau estimated household income for five years from 2007 through 2011. Economic recession began in December, 2007, and bottomed in June, 2009, after which recovery continued through 2011.
Three levels of income show themselves. The highest was here. Solvang-Santa Ynez CCD included Buellton, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Ballard, Los Olivos and Los Alamos. The Santa Ynez Valley and vicinity emerged from the Great Recession of 2007-2009 with notable economic strength, perhaps because unemployment and underemployment had less effect here than elsewhere. Income from investments and other sources was included.
The next level included Santa Barbara and vicinity, and the state. The third level was that of Santa Maria CCD, Lompoc CCD, and the nation. Santa Maria and vicinity had a higher median estimated household income than the U. S., as did Lompoc and vicinity.
