Employment Development Department releases
Santa Barbara County employment numbers. According to the Economic Development Department the unemployment rate in the Santa Barbara County was 7.3 percent in October 2012, up from a revised 7.1 percent in September 2012, and below the year-ago estimate of 8.4 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.8 percent for California and 7.5 percent for the nation during the same period. The City of Solvang has a 3.4 percent unemployment rate according to the information found on the EDD site. For more information go to: www.edd.ca.gov and follow to Labor Market Information. |

Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital receives award
Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital has been recognized for continuous high quality  patient care. The Patient Satisfaction Achievement Award acknowledges 15 consecutive quarters of patient satisfaction rated above 97% in the Emergency Department at Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital. Becker's Hospital Review recently reported that "SYVCH was among the top 41 hospitals where patients said that their pain was "Always" well controlled". The data is taken from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare database, using information from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The survey allows patients to rate line items relating to their patient care experience and covers between January 2011 through December 2011.

Solvang's economy should continue to grow in 2013.
Economic growth in Solvang and Santa Ynez Valley might be much like that in the United States. Real gross domestic product is the dollar value of all goods and services produced, after you subtract higher prices. Here are yearly changes in real gross domestic product (GDP) of the U. S.
The rate of gain in GDP next year is expected to be less than that of this year, and a little more than that of last year. Rate of change is actual for last year, and estimated for this year and next year.
 Higher taxes and a slower rate of spending by government are expected to reduce total economic activity from this year's level. Real consumer spending is seen as rising more slowly next year than this year.
Estimates of GDP are averages as of November, 2012, by economists representing Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Commerzbank, Decision Economics, Deutsche Bank, Economist Intelligence Unit, Goldman Sachs, HSBC Securities, ING, J. P. Morgan Chase, KBC Bank, Morgan Stanley, RBC, RBS, Schroders, Scotia Capital, Societe Generale, Standard Chartered, and UBS.
Number of single-family homes resold in California is expected to rise 1.3% next year, after rising 5.1% this year from last year, as forecasted by California Association of Realtors. Median price is expected to rise 5.7 % next year from this year, after having risen 10.9% this year from last year.
Visitors' direct expenditures in California are forecasted to grow 5.1% next year, and 6.4% this year. Last year they grew 7.7%. Direct expenditures by domestic visitors are forecasted to rise 4.5% next year, while those by international visitors rise 7.9%. International visitors are prized because they bring new money to the U. S., their expenditures being counted as exports from the U. S., and because they tend to stay longer and spend more than domestic visitors.
Economic output of the wine industry should continue to improve in 2013. Online job postings of offered wine industry jobs were 21% higher in October, 2012, than a year earlier. Activity was the greatest in six years.
