A group of community members from throughout the valley completed an 8 week course of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training through the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Their final class on October 15th included an emergency exercise in which they were able to practice things they had learned throughout the 8 weeks.
They are a group of people who recognize the importance of Emergency Preparedness.

Martin Good
Marty is the owner of MyLivingChristmasTree.com. You may know Marty as the man who provided all of the beautiful trees that decorated the downtown area last year. Aaron Peteresen's idea of marking the 100th Anniversary of Solvang came to light using trees from Marty's company. Originally Marty was renting trees to homeowners but found out that the trees which are not native to this area did not do well indoors. They do thrive in the great outdoors as long as they are kept in their pots. Marty keeps the trees all year on a property west of Buellton where he cares for them throughout the year for the next holiday season.

 Our Household Incomes, 2011
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce
How much income did our neighbors have in 2011? Here are estimates from the U. S.
Census Bureau. Estimated median household income in Ventura County was 46% higher than U. S. household median income. Santa Barbara County's estimated median household income was 20% above the national median. Estimated median household income in San Luis Obispo County was 7% above the U. S. median. California's estimated median household income was 13% above the U. S. median. Santa Barbara County in 2008 was slightly below California in estimated median income of 2008, as the Great Recession deepened. Recovery from the national recession of 2007-2009 by 2011 apparently was faster for Santa Barbara County than for the state. Housing related industries such as the construction industry might have been more deeply affected by recession throughout California than in Santa Barbara County. Tourism marketing from Santa Barbara County, its regions, its cities, and its businesses often targeted eastern Ventura County, where corporate offices such as those of Amgen and Dole Food created higher median incomes. Western Ventura County depended upon incomes from tourism and agriculture more than the eastern part of the county. Santa Barbara County, too, had regional differences in median household incomes, with the southern area having higher median household incomes than the northern. San Luis Obispo County presented a similar distinction of a more rural northern part of the county from a more urban southern part, and higher incomes in the south. All of these estimated household incomes were a bit lower in 2011 than they were in 2008, if the effect of inflation is considered. Inflation adjusted median yearly household income in Santa Barbara County fell from $60,645 to $60,505, or less than half of one percent. Amounts did not include employee deductions, taxes, or benefits. Inflation adjusted benefits of full time employees on payrolls in the U. S. rose by 10.8 percent from 2007 to 2011, while wages grew 1.4%. Benefits typically were not taxed. Please see 2011 American Community Survey (1-year), income in inflation-adjusted dollars, California counties and places of 65,000+ population, on the Website of U. S. Census Bureau for details. Data of 2008 are in Our Household Income, a part of the archived newsletter of June, 2010, on the Website of Solvang Chamber of Commerce (www.solvangcc.com). See U. S. Department of Commerce, Survey of Current Business, October, 2012, pages 110-121, for estimates of employee benefits. |
