As a transplanted northerner, I can wax nostalgic for snow this time of year. So, watching the video above reminds me that playing in the snow sure was fun...and dangerous!

Bundle up those plants!

It may not seem like it lately, but it is Winter. It has been unseasonably warm, but don't get lulled into a false sense of security regarding the protection of your outdoor plants.

It is only a mater of time before we experience some frosty nights. For many plants, one really cold night is all it takes to do them in.

Did you know that there are things (besides throwing a bed sheet over them) that you can do to protect your plants before, and after, frigid nights arrive?

Just as a person makes themselves less susceptible to sickness through exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle, plants can be made more temperature resistant with certain techniques and preparation.

Follow the link below to give your flowers and plants a better fighting chance the next time old man Winter comes calling!

Are you one of those people that keeps a fruit tree growing in your yard? A lot of us do. Maybe it was already there when we moved in and it just seemed wrong to get rid of something which produces food. Right?

Well, get the most out of it. January is a good time to give that citrus tree a little attention so that you can have sweeter, juicier fruit later on.

Try two simple things.

Trim some of those interior branches away. They can use up energy and block light from reaching fully through the tree canopy. This will give the tree more photosynthetic energy and focus growth towards the fruit more efficiently.

A lot of the pests and diseases that citrus trees suffer from can be traced to nutritional deficiencies, so January is also a time to think about a regular schedule of a 6-6-6 fertilizer around the drip line of the tree. About a pound for each year of age for the tree should do.

Give it a try, and let us know how well it worked next time you enjoy a fresh squeezed pitcher of home made juice!

Our Favorite Five
Here is a look back at some of our favorite projects of 2012
(in no particular order)

Snell Isle Pergola
This covered pergola in Snell Isle incorporated a lot of fine detail. From the dressed columns to the arched gussets, it required a lot of skill-and we like that!

Custom Gate Replacement
This project gave us a chance to have some fun replicating 5 custom mission style gates
which, though beautiful, had failed because they were built with the wrong wood for outdoor use.

Hyde Park Re-model
This project to replace old handrails and build a pergola was fun because it tested our abilities to use our craftsmanship to match the strict requirements of Old Hyde Park's Architectural Review Committee.

Lutz Custom Trellis Screen
Our client in Lutz needed a little privacy, shade, and color at the West end of their pool deck enclosure. We were happy to oblige with this elegant and durable trellis screen.

Land O'Lakes Yard Rehab
We work most of our magic with carpentry, but our real secret to making outdoor living spaces beautiful is that we treat every project as though we are working on our own home. This yard rehab shows off some of our talent for non-carpentry. Hey, we're good at a lot of things!

Plant of the Month
Dusty Miller
(Senecio cineraria)

Even the most beautiful painting looks better in a good frame. Likewise, the most attractive plants and garden accessories look best with a proper backdrop or boarder. Dusty Miller does a great job of providing an attractive ground covering, boarder, or hedge to accentuate the highlights of your outdoor living spaces.

Known for its delicate silvery-white leaves, which are known to reflect even faint moonlight, now is a good time of year to add Dusty Miller to your yard or garden. It is fairly drought resistant and is widely available.

As long as you give it plenty of sun and don't over water it, Dusty Miller will grow well, be relatively pest free, and will make your outdoor spaces pop!
