Green Goodie
We tend to lean toward more tasteful lighting displays for the home, but we also love a good holiday lighting display. Since nobody does it for Thanksgiving, here is a pretty darn cool display someone did for Halloween!

GREEN GOODIE
Mulch. Mulch. Mulch!
Dry times are ahead. So mulch your beds now to preserve moisture in the soil. Mulch also can give your yard a little splash of fresh color at a time of year when things can start to look a little drab.

Carpenter's Corner
Landscape lighting is a great way to create atmosphere and visual interest in your outdoor living spaces. Gone is the time when outdoor lighting meant putting a 300 watt floodlight at the top of a wooden pole to give your yard the feel of a mall parking lot. Today there are a multitude of options, but they all fall into three basic categories.
Path lighting: More than just a way to see where you are going. Path lighting is generally low level indirect lighting. With many styles to chose from, the fixtures can be virtually hidden along your walkways or can be made to stand out to accentuate the many ornate styles which are available.
Down Lighting: Down lighting is used to highlight and create points of interest. They are typically directed downward from above to project soft, comfortable light onto a sitting area, water feature, or planted area. Down lighting is what helps to give your outdoor spaces the feel of your favorite resort or outdoor restaurant.
Up Lighting: Up lighting usually consists of spotlights with a higher intensity than path and down lighting. Projecting up lighting into your tree canopy and larger shrubs is what gives depth and dimension to your yard.
Using all three types of landscape lighting in conjunction will make your outdoor living spaces look larger, more dramatic, and more inviting.
Tip: Start simple. There is no need to light up your yard like an amusement park to get dramatic effect. You can always add more lights later if you like.

Project of the MonthOld Hyde Park Remodel
 | Click for time lapse |
Our client in Old Hyde Park had completed most of a major remodeling and renovation project on their home. The place looked great except for some, shall we say antiquated, aspects of their outdoor living space.
They needed to replace an old stockade fence which was falling into the neighbor's yard, remove and replace some very old metal handrails along the outdoor steps, and replace an outdated aluminum carport with something a little more tasteful. In addition, it all needed to conform to the Old Hyde Park restoration district's Architectural Review Committee...no problem!
Gardencarpentry.com always likes a challenge. We replaced that old stockade fence with a new one, including a nice strong aluminum framed double gate for the driveway. We built a beautiful wood pergola where the dark and drab carport used to be. Then we removed the institutional looking metal handrails and built stylish new wood ones with star-burst pattern balusters in thier place. Wow, what a differnce! We think our client and the Architectural Review Committee will be very pleased!Click the photo above to see time lapse.

GREEN GOODIE
Remember, November through February are colder months with less light, so your lawn goes into a dormant phase this time of year. Cut back on watering the lawn from once a week to once every 10-14 days as needed.

Plant of the Month
Plumbago(Plumbago Auriculata)
 | Click image for detailed info |
We are coming into a time of the year when we can all use a little extra color in our outdoor living spaces. Plumbago is a nice way to accomplish this. It blooms throughout most of the year with pale blue, pleasant smelling flowers and is tolerant of a variety of soil types. It is also not particularly prone to pests or diseases. This vine-like shrub is well suited as a boarder plant, hedge, or in planters. It will also creep down masonry walls if placed above. Plumbago is not native to North America, but is not known to be invasive, so it makes a nice addition to your yard or garden. It needs full sun for best growth, but will be alright with some shade. It is also moderately drought tolerant once established. For more information about Plumbago click the picture above or the link below. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fp487 |
