In accordance with the Laws of Florida and the Tampa City Charter, the Planning Commission recommends and approves a redistricting plan for the Tampa City Council single-member election districts to the Supervisor of Elections. Based on legal requirements and data, five alternative redistricting plans are being developed using the following considerations in  developing the alternatives:
  • To create four districts with population as nearly equal as possible
  • To create compact and contiguous districts using the existing precinct boundaries as building blocks
  • To avoid retrogression in the established minority population
The redistricting process must be completed by April 1, in the year prior to the next scheduled City Council Elections. The next City Council election is in April 2015; therefore, Planning Commission action is required by April of 2014. Formal Planning Commission action is anticipated in January 2014.

The Planning Commission is the official Land Planning Agency for Tampa, Temple Terrace, Plant City, and Unincorporated Hillsborough County. The Hillsborough Metropolitan Planning Organization is a transportation policy board comprised of representatives from local governments and transportation agencies focusing on transportation planning and programming decisions that support the mobility needs and economic development of these jurisdictions.

In accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other nondiscrimination laws, public participation is solicited without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability or family status.
