Humanities on the March

Shared Stories of the Civil War is going on the road. This month, the Kansas Humanities Council is collaborating with the Baker University Speech Choir of Baldwin City to bring a week-long tour of Shared Stories reader's theater events to four communities within the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area: Leavenworth, Fort Scott, and Topeka in Kansas and Kansas City in Missouri.

Shared Stories of the Civil War features scripts compiled from historical letters, diaries, newspaper particles, and other primary source material from the Civil War era. At the upcoming events, the Baker University Speech Choir will bring the words of Civil War participants and observers to life through their unique spoken word presentation style. Each presentation will be followed by a discussion facilitated by a historian from Kansas or Missouri.

Presenting primary source material from the Civil War era is a welcome opportunity for the Speech Choir, according to Director Susan Emel. "The Shared Stories events open many new doors for our students by allowing us to present in new places and contexts, while collaborating with KHC and local historical societies on their goals. We are excited to have this as our first 'world tour' and expansion of our program into new avenues of possibility."

The Shared Stories of the Civil War events take place the week of March 11. Click here for a list of events and locations.
