Mobile Food Pantry gives away a half-million pounds of food
Mobile Food Pantry truckThe Mobile Food Pantry hit a huge milestone this month, officially passing the half-million pounds of food mark.  Since the program's inception in January 2011, the volunteers at the Mobile Food Pantry have shared 534,875 pounds of groceries with our neighbors.

In addition, we have served 11,474 households and 39,487 individuals.  If you need some help visualizing how many people that would be, picture the arena at the Fort Worth Convention Center completely full of people. Now, picture four of those same arenas full of people.  That's about how many people we've served in the past two-and-a-half years.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who have helped make this service to our community possible.  Special thanks go to the three people who have served as Mobile Food Pantry Coordinators:  Vicky Otterman in 2011, Lee Baldwin in 2012, and Larry Jenkins in 2013.
Village Library serves 55 students this school year
Village Library party
When school started last September, excitement was brewing at Mission Central's Village Library. Instead of offering tutoring just two nights a week, we were able to expand programming to four nights a week. This allowed us to double the number of students in our program to 55 children each week.

Volunteer tutors work with students one-on-one, helping them with their homework, reading with them, and playing educational games with them. This extra help is key in helping our students succeed in school.

When report cards came in at the end of the year, we were thrilled to see that at least seven of our students made straight-A's and at least 21 of our students made the A/B honor roll.  We are so proud of our hard-working students and grateful to their dedicated tutors.

Drivers needed for Village Food Pantry
Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, a dedicated group of volunteers meet at the Walmart on Precinct Line to load up the store's donations and bring them to Mission Central.

The impact these "drivers" have on our organization is huge.  Last year, the value of Walmart's donations to Mission Central was more than $290,000.  These donations allow us to operate our food pantry with minimal cash outlays for food and toiletries.

Several members of our Monday driving team have had to step down temporarily, and we now have a critical need for drivers on Monday mornings.  (We also need those who can sub on Wednesdays and Fridays.)  Drivers need to be able to lift 30-50 pounds, and it is helpful if they have a truck or SUV.  The pick-up takes about an a hour and a half (9:00 am - 10:30 am).

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Catherine Hollis at 817-595-0011 or missioncentralvolunteers@gmail.com.  If you know someone who may be able to help on Monday mornings, please share this email with them.
