Staff Picks

Our staff handles hundreds of books every day! Here are just a few that we are enjoying.

Jen W. recommends Parenting is Easy: You're Probably Just Doing it Wrong by Sara Given. Given's popular blog, "It's Like They Know Us," skewers the impossibly glamorized images of parenting in ads and popular media. Now her wicked humor is available in this little book, which would make a great gift for any new moms or dads you know. Isn't it comforting to learn that "everything about having a baby is going to be clean and quiet and pretty"?

Jane enjoyed My Life in Middlemarch by Rebecca Mead, a fascinating close reading of George Eliot's classic. Mead examines Eliot's extraordinary life for clues to her writing, and describes her long and happy love affair with writer and critic George Henry Lewes. He encouraged Eliot to take on her great themes of moral courage and the desire of women for a substantial and rewarding life. Mead also shows how reading Middlemarch has continued to affect her own development as a woman and a writer.

Jean recommends two great non-fiction reads this month. The first is The Oregon Trail: a new American journey by Rinker Buck. The author and his irrepressible brother take a wagon pulled by three mules from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Oregon, following the ruts of the pioneers' covered wagons across modern America.  It's part history, part personal memoir, part rollicking road trip saga - sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, always enjoyable.

Jean's second nonfiction recommendation is Project Puffin: the improbable quest to bring a beloved seabird back to Egg Rock by Stephen W. Kress and Derrick Z. Jackson. The authors - an Audubon Society naturalist and a Boston Globe writer - tell the tale of amazingly persistent scientists who re-establish puffins nesting  on a tiny island off the coast of Maine where they hadn't been seen for a hundred years. Battling fierce storms and even fiercer predator gulls, they succeed against all odds. The reader celebrates each step forward and suffers each setback along with the authors. But more than just this one success story, the book makes us think about humankind's role as stewards of our fragile planet.
