Book cover BOOK REVIEW:  Daughters-in-Law by Joanna Trollope

Don't believe the description on the cover.  One of the girls doesn't have an affair and the sons don't make enemies of their mothers!
This is story of eight people who come to terms with growing up and growing old.  It takes some introspection, some risks, some crises and some understanding, and is a journey we all take many times in our lives.
Joanna Trollope never fails to create characters we can literally live with: believable, fallible and likable.  It's a good read.  We currently have one copy.

  The Rest of the Story...

Last month I suggested you DO judge a book by its cover.  Did you?  I know I have become more aware of the cover art on our books.  I hope you have, too.

So where did the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover." come from?  Turns out George Eliot first used that quote in "Mill on the Floss", written in 1860. (we have a copy in stock!)  It was a quote in response to Daniel Defoe's golden cover.  The quote was picked up again about 1944 and has been a staple ever since.  Most of the time this quote is used to caution not to judge others by their appearance.

We get boxes and boxes of books turned into us for donation or for Store Credit.  Many times the books on top are standard popular paperback.  However, we have learned not to judge the contents of the box by what's on top!  The treasures are below the surface.  We have found a wonderful copy of "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle" by Betty MacDonald, as well as a full set of C. S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" and of J. K. Rowlings "Harry Potter".   This is part of what makes owning a used bookstore such fun.

I have been catching up on my favorite series:  "A Sunless Sea" by Anne Perry, "Leaving Everything Most Loved" by Jacqueline Winspear and of course, Maeve Binchy's final book "A Week in Winter".  How wonderful it is to have such interesting and intriguing books among us.

Happy Reading!                                          --Gayle
