YOU CAN TELL A BOOK BY ITS COVER
I am fascinated by book covers!
Case in point: Jacqueline Winspear's 'Maisie Dobbs' series set in 1930's London. I especially love the books published here in the United States. The covers have a distinct graphic feel, capturing the period in a way that her other book covers have not.
In doing a little research, I found more about the design of the American editions on Jacqueline Winspear's website. British artist, Andrew Davidson created these unique jackets specifically for the American editions. You can see a comparison of the various editions on Winspear's website. I am particularly impressed with Winspear's thoughtful and generous credit to a designer.
Further down on her homepage, Winspear also told about the creation of her website design. It carries a butterfly motif taken directly from a 1930's wallpaper design published in 1930. Beautiful!
For another piece on designing book jackets, see Chip Kidd (via YouTube). He is the creative genius behind the book covers of Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, Me by Katherine Hepburn and Naked by David Sedaris (to name a few). The video is about 20 minutes long and very interesting.
Next time you choose a book, fly in the face of the old adage "you can't tell a book by its cover" and choose your book precisely by its cover! It will be an adventure, I'm sure. See you soon! Gayle
