Memorial Day

Monday, May 27

Memorial Day, an official Federal holiday, was originally a day set aside to honor Union Civil War heroes. After WWI it was extended to include all military personnel who had died in any war or military action.

As of 1971, the day is celebrated the last Monday of May.  Many people visit cemetaries and place American flags at gravesites.  Over the years, Memorial Day has also become the unofficial beginning of summer, celebrating with family picnics, sports events and festivals.

     The Rest of the Story...

Ah, sunshine!  When I can't find it in Seattle, I slip away to the south.  The first week in April found me in Arizona and Nevada.  I spent happy hours basking in the sunshine, visiting friends, browsing museums and reading books!
I flew to Phoenix, rented a car and joined some 'snow-bird' friends from Seattle at their RV resort home in El Mirage.  What a place!  Not only do they have an exchange library ( a must!) but they also have a wonderful walk-in swimming pool, flat paths and roads where I tried out a borrowed bicycle and many craft opportunities.  We spent a warm afternoon at the Desert Botanical Gardens, enjoying a lunch of locally grown veggies.
I also drove to Wickenburg, AZ to view the 'Cowgirl Up' exhibit at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. This exhibit is in its 7th year and features women artists who paint the west.  I was told by the Museum docents that Wickenburg is also the home of the most dude ranches in the country!  It's a marvelous little town just 60 or so miles north of Phoenix and well worth the drive and visit.  Plan to stay longer than I did! (only 4 hours).  If you go, be sure to make room for a sandwich at Nana's Sandwich Saloon and maybe ice cream at the Chaparral.  YUM!
Later in the week I drove to Prescott to visit a long-time friend from Seattle.  We had much catching up to do but also made time to take in the art exhibit of Dana Cohn at Ben's Fine Art Gallery and have lunch at the historic Palace Restaurant and Saloon.  Did I mention I wasn't wearing a jacket!
Off to Las Vegas to attend the wedding of another long-time friend.  I was thrilled to be with her and she looked and was so beautiful!  Thea, if you are reading this, more wishes for a happy future with Craig!
Through all of this I still read four books. I caught up on two favorite mystery authors:  Anne Perry's William Monk series
and Jaqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series (both set in Victorian London).  I read Erin Hildebrand 's "Nantucket Nights" and Wendy Wax' "SIngle in Suburbia".  Lots of sun, lots of friends, lots of art and lots of good books.  Heaven!                                           Happy Reading, Gayle

Author of the Month
from Gayle's Reading List

Maeve Binchy
Maeve Binchy
1940-2012

Hours and hours of pleasurable reading beginning in 1982 with her first novel, "Light a Penny Candle".  If you love gentle stories, intertwined communities and genuine characters, as I do, you will be thrilled to have found this author.  Her 17th novel "A Week in Winter" was published posthumously just this spring.  It is currently waiting for me on my bookshelf, as I count it a special gift.  Ms. Binchy struggled with health issues for much of her last years, and yet, still continued to write.  I am so grateful to her.  One of my favorites is "Heart and Soul", but, honestly, they are all 'the best'!

We have several titles currently available in paperback.
