The Rest of the Story...Literacy
When Karen and I bought Page 2 BOOKS eleven years ago, we made a list of the values that were important to us and that would be our driving force as we developed our store. At the top of the list was literacy.
Over the years we have had many opportunities to support literacy. We happily donate books for local auctions to raise funds. We have partnered with Gregory Heights Elementary School for various programs and have held book drives for our Highline Food Bank. In 2008 we sponsored a professional storyteller for the Strawberry Festival. We also collect food donations each week in the belief that hungry children have a much more difficult time learning to read. For several years we offered support to Page Ahead, a local organization that supplies new books to children in need. We also strive to keep a good selection of children's books available at a very reasonable price.
A program we started about two years ago, also to support our dedication to literacy, is our KIDS CLUB. Children up through the 6th Grade can bring their books in for a direct, straight-across exchange. There is no charge for their membership. We do require that they are accompanied by an adult and that they exchange only children's books.
NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK is May 13-19. This is a week set aside for local groups to have special events for children's literacy. Our Burien Library is offering a special music program with CASPAR BABYPANTS. This event requires tickets but the tickets are FREE. Just ask for them at the library.
There are other children's book events in the area. Please refer to www.bookweekonline.com. You can also vote for your favorite children's books at this site.

JACQUELINE
WINSPEAR is a mystery writer and author of the 'Maisie Dobbs' series which is set in London during post WWI years.
The first of ten novels, "Maisie Dobbs" introduces a young woman of uncommon intelligence, demeanor and luck Her business card reads "Psychologist and Inquirer". Each mystery is solved using both clues she finds and her intuition.
Maisie's first case is to investigate a suspicion of infidelity. However, the plot quickly thickens to include a grave site, a home for war veterans and Maisie's own ghosts.
I am now reading the 5th in the series: "An Incomplete Revenge". I enjoy Maisie's own story and sturggles as well as her intuitive skills, which have roots in her grandmother's heritage.
These books are written in a fascinating voice with complex twists and turns and a style that reflects the culture and the period.
If you are interested in reading this series, be sure to put your name on our wishlist! These books aren't frequently in stock, but they are worth waiting for!
