Thank you for telling your friends and family about us!

January 2013

 Greetings!

New Years

Wishing you a very Happy New Year!

Here are three new books you can look forward to:

Maeve Binchy (who died in July, 2012) left us her final novel "A Week in Winter" which will be released February 14.  It's about a group of people at a newly opened country hotel.

Stephen King has a new novel set in a carnival. It's titled "Joyland" and will be released in paperback in June.

If you have enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink" and "The Tipping Point" you will look forward to the October release of "David and Goliath", which examines the interplay between underdogs and the power brokers.

Happy Reading!

Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, drink and dessert donated by area businesses. Proceeds will go to the Highline Food Bank and White Center Food Bank.

     The Rest of the Story...

Looking out in front of me is a huge expanse of an empty 2013 calendar.  What will this year bring?  What do I want to happen?  What am I hoping will happen?  Stop for a few minutes and dream.  I want more travel and more time with my kids and grandkids.  I want our decks to be repaired.  I expect to stay healthy.  What's on your list?
I have had such a glorious year of reading.  I have made more of an effort to read from my 'stack' instead of just picking up the next book at the store.  And because of that, I have read more series (Kate Ross, Dianne Day, Lisa Lutz) and found a new favorite author, Wendy Wax.
On the www.abebooks.com  website appears "Beth's Best Reads for 2012"  Notice, not "best sellers" or "top NY Times".  These are "Beth's".  (No, I don't know 'who' she is!).  What inspires me about Beth's list is her totally biased opinions about her choices.  I am challenging myself, and challenging you, also, should you care, to look back at the books you read in 2012.  With a very biased view, assess your reading.  Which book was your favorite?  Why?  Which ones disappointed you?  Did you read one that was recommended?  Was it great? or awful?
Sometimes it's just a good idea to stop and think about what we are reading and why.  Did you have a favorite this year?  Let me know your thoughts.
                                               Happy Reading     ---Gayle

AUTHOR OF THE MONTH
from Gayle's Reading List

Maeve Binchy  Maeve Binchy

Maeve Binchy (1940-2012) has been one of my favorite authors ever since I stumbled on to her first novel, "Light a Penny Candle".  This first book is about a young girl who is evacuated to Ireland from war-torn London.  Trademarks of Binchy's work are friendships and loyalty.  Each of her seventeen novels is rich in human experience while managing to avoid both malice and explicit sex.

She is a major award winner and has outsold other Irish writers such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and  Roddy Doyle.  For more information please see her website at www.maevebinchy.com .  She's an author to know.
