Charles Dickens opens his famous novel with the immortal lines, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...." He related the plight of the peasantry in Paris leading up to the French Revolution with conditions under a putatively different system in London. Today's battle over quality appears to focus on two cities as well-Washington DC and Your Town, USA.

The new ACMQ-SR Social Media Initiative

Building on the excitement generated at the ACMQ National Conference in February, the ACMQ Students and Residents Section has created a Social Media Taskforce to help ACMQ launch itself into the world of Web 2.0. Using the new social media initiatives we have developed, we can engage with our members more actively and discuss the rapid developments in the field of medical quality. We've developed a new LinkedIn page, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account. During the next quarter, our goal is to double the number of members on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.  Help us to reach this goal by joining our online communities and contributing to the discussion by using the links below!

Patient transfers: "Hand-offs" The ACGME and IOM recently released new guidelines limiting the number of hours worked by residents to minimize resident fatigue.  With more mandated break periods in between patient care shifts, the need to "hand-off" or transfer patient care responsibilities between members of a healthcare team become increasingly frequent as residents, fellows, and attendings come on and off shifts.  Disciplines such as nursing, and fields within medicine such as pediatrics, emergency medicine, obstetrics and internal medicine, have studied hand-offs, and have made early recommendations as to what elements should be included in a proper and effective hand-off.
