Keeping Up As the Beat Goes On

By Himat Kaur Khalsa

This will be short and sweet this month, friends, reflecting that people are feeling the familiar chiseling and the need is to keep up as things continue.  Uranus resumed direct motion December 17th, and is now moving back towards the square to Pluto that will happen in April.  Those planets are less than three degrees apart, so although Uranus was retrograde and moving away from the Pluto square aspect, it never really left the distance of influence.  So, we are still in the midst of the ongoing beaming catharsis of Uranus and Pluto, and other planets have been dancing in areas that form frictional aspects with them, building heightened tension that churns our growth. Serving the Forgotten this Holiday Season
by Jivan Joti Kaur Khalsa

A tradition for many years at Hacienda de Guru Ram has been to serve the homeless at the Salvation Army during the holiday season. This year was no exception. On Monday, December 23rd, a group of sangat members served a graceful and festive sit-down dinner to approxi-mately sixty homeless members of our Santa Fe community at the Salvation Army Headquarters at 525 West Alameda. The dinner was lovingly prepared by volunteers at the Salvation Army and included all of the traditional Holiday trimmings. Read entire article

Learning the Code

By Lindsey Bright
SUN Staff Writer

No matter their age, people use electronics. From toddlers playing with iPhones, to five-year-olds competently navigating through movies and games on the Internet, everyone seems to be interested in technology.

To use these products, most people learn through trial and error or opting to watch or read a tutorial. However, during the week of Dec. 9-13, students around the globe went further and learned what makes software. These students participated in an initiative called the Hour of Code, created by non-profit organization, Code.org.   Read entire article

New Mexico's India Connection
By Dr. Frances Levine from the Museum Times, Dec 2013-Jan 2014

Ask most people about their dream vacation, and more than a few would likely seek a lazy week on a beach or at an elegant spa. The vacation I took last month in Northern India may not have been relaxing in a luxury-resort sense, but it was a fulfilling experience. It all began with an email from Sarab Nihal Singh, a friend and colleague from my days as an assistant dean at the Santa Fe Community College. His company and the Nihal Foundation were sponsoring a conference on teacher-training and awarding scholarships to village youths. Read entire article on page 3 of Museum Times.

Movie Review  - The Book Thief
By Hari Jiwan Singh

I saw a fascinating movie yesterday. It's called The Book Thief. It takes place in Germany just prior to and during World War II.  Now, I'm filled up on movies, books, TV programs about this point in history, even though I was born as a Jew and still sensitive to stories about the Holocaust. But, this one was different.

In this movie, the circumstances become the antagonist. The story takes place in a small German town set against the rise of Hitler and his surrogates. An older couple adopts a young girl who was taken from her mother because of her purported communist leanings. This dysfunctional has decided to adopt this young girl and her brother in order to qualify for food stamps. Unfortunately, the young boy dies unexpectedly on the journey further frustrating the adopting couple and mitigating the allotment of food stamps available. Read entire article
