October 27, 2015 - Wichita - Today the Kansas Policy Institute congratulates the Kansas Department of Education in its new student-focused prioritization of Kansas public education. KSDE Commissioner Randy Watson announced today a new vision for the department at its annual conference of educators in Wichita.
"The announcement today by Commissioner Watson is a positive step toward refocusing a state education system that has placed institutional priorities ahead of students," said KPI President Dave Trabert. "Our research shows a significant lack of accountability in the current finance system and a surprising disconnect with student achievements. We are especially pleased to see the recognition that too many Kansas high school graduates are needing remedial training upon entering our state colleges."
While KPI applauds the student-focused vision of KSDE, there are still areas of concern. "Commissioner Watson said that 'Kansas leads the world in the success of every student.' That's a noble goal but unfortunately, this is not the case today. The 2015 ACT shows only 32% of the 2015 graduating class was college-ready in English, Reading, Math and Science - and the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that low income students are several years' worth of learning behind everyone else " said Trabert.
"Kansas must be honest about student achievements, our lack of accountability in the finance formula, the great disparity in at-risk student progress, and travesty of remedial courses for high school graduates. With these concerns addressed, we believe Kansas can lead the world in student success."
